English Through The Story

Lesson 2 Outline: Creation Story

(Genesis 1-2:4)

Students will be able to…

- Introduce themselves and their favorite activities.
- Use correct pronouns when introducing a classmate.
- Describe beautiful things using simple present tense.

Materials Needed:
- Ball
- List of new vocabulary words
- Creation story printout
- Student note handouts
- Jigsaw Puzzle envelopes/packets
- Creation day picture card printouts
- Beautiful Place Picture printouts
- Introduction Script

Intro Activity: Getting to Know You

- Give instructions for activity. Write down sentence structures on
board. Bring a ball and have students stand in a circle. Hold the ball and say,
“My name is _____ and I like to _____.” Toss the ball to a student. The
student must say, “His/her name is __[Name]__ and he/she likes to
_[Activity you said]_. Then the student must repeat the first sentence with
their own name and what they like to do. Repeat until all students have
introduced themselves.

Activity #1: New Vocabulary

- Go through the story ahead of time. Mark down any vocabulary words that
you think your students probably have not learned yet. In class, say new
vocabulary words out loud and describe each word. Have students repeat
the words out loud. Write words on board. Allow students to copy down in
their new vocabulary notebook.
Activity #2: Tell the Story
- Have students listen as you tell the creation story - either from memory or
reading from the printout. Allow students to draw out the story on their
worksheets as they hear it and keep the papers for future reference in their
folders.

Activity #3: Jigsaw Puzzle

- Divide students into 7 groups. Give each group a Jigsaw Puzzle envelope.
Each envelope should contain words associated with each creation day (do
not number the envelopes). Students will sort through words together and
put them in order of appearance in the story. After each group is finished,
have entire class stand up and organize themselves in order of each day (1-
7). When they get it correct, hand each group the picture of their creation
day with the day's number on it. Ask each group to introduce their day.
Write down pattern for them to follow on the board as they introduce their
day. Each student in group must participate.

Pattern:
This day is day __________.
On day _______ God created ________________.

Activity #4: Beauty Picture Cards

- As a class, brainstorm a lot of describing words for places. As students say
the words, write them down on the board. Some examples might include:
natural, calming, exciting, relaxing, popular, quiet, bustling, etc. Then, lay
out picture cards of beautiful places. Allow students to pick a card. In
groups, have students explain why they chose the card and describe what
makes that place beautiful (they may look at the describing words on the
board for reference).

Activity #5: Imaginary Introductions

- Get students into pairs. Have them pretend that they are a native from the
place card that they had selected. They must introduce themselves to their
partner, describe their 'home' and explain what they like to do there. Place
format on screen or give out printed scripts for students to follow. Explain
some of the vocabulary like 'gotta go' or 'see ya.' Have students walk
around room and introduce themselves to at least 5 others.
Activity #6: Discussion
- Discussion - Get students into small groups. Have them discuss 3 questions:
• What was your favorite day of the creation story and why?

• What makes something beautiful?

• Is beauty important?

Question Time:
- Leave a few minutes before the end of class to address any questions that
students might have.

Contingency:
- Introduce new friend to class - if more time is needed, after activity #5, have
students pick a partner. They must introduce their partner, describe their
partner's 'home,' and explain their partner's favorite activity to the class.
They must use correct pronouns in their introductions.
