MTN Uganda
M: (Unclear) So that am able to hear it when I go back. Ok, so that is us and that’s why
we are here. If you need to use the washrooms, I think they are towards the end of the
corridor there you will move out. You’ll find someone to direct you. But am going to
encourage us to limit the times we move out and also our phones, kindly put them in
silence. Because it has a ringtone or a vibration once it rings, I know we are young
people. So, our WhatsApp notifications keep coming in and then our phones also ring a
lot. So, when it rings it’ll disorganise the recording eh. So let me give you a few seconds
to sort your phones. Put it, I don’t want you to miss your phone calls so don’t switch it
off. Put it in silence keep it off the table so that you’re not tempted to view your phone
eh.
R: (Whisperer) what?

designers. Hmm am hoping to fit into something like she does.
M: hmm youre welcome. Lastly?
R: my name is Nakato Jackline, am doing development studies in Makerere University
M: Where are you studying from?
R: Makerere University.
M: hmm okay, you are going to hurry and speak louder coz am next you but still am not
hearing very well. how do you spend your leisure time?
R: I like watching movies, getting contacting with friends,
M: hmm okay you are welcome, am sure now we know each other, each other person stays
direct to you, opposite to you(laughs). So, I’ll also try my level best to call everyone by
name.
Tell me, when it comes to things to do in the telecom sector, so when it comes to telecom
adverts for telecom companies, where do you normally get it. You see them, watch them here
there. What are your sources when it comes to telecom adverts?
R: google ads, YouTube then google ads, google ads, hmm even radios
M: when it comes to TV, which TVs do you normally watch?
R: NTV, Nbs TV, Spark, Bukeede
M: and radios? Which ones do usually listen to?
R: Radio Maria, MCF, Galaxy
M; and you heard those telecom adverts, eh?
R: yes
M: I just want to be sure that (laughs) I don’t listen to radio so I don’t know. Apart from
maybe, you told me YouTube and then google ads,
R:M televisions, radios, then social media platforms like twitter, Facebook, hmm Instagram
and newspapers am not sure.
M: when did you last read it?
R: (laughs) I can’t really tell but people read but I believe that. But on twitter is so common.
Hmm no you said newspapers, newspapers.
M: actually, you were telling me that in newspapers, am asking when did you last read it?
R: (laughs) adverts. Hmm okay I think like two months back. Yeah, daily monitor. Hmm like
two months back. I was actually just opening not reading (laughs)
M; (laughs) hmm it’s okay so it’s a discussion, I’ll not recall your names when you keep
quiet hmm, so we have to make sure that we are talking. So that I have to call your names
every time so that by the time you’re leaving you be like that madam (laughs).
Tell me when it comes to the word Airtel, what are those things that comes on your mind?
R; which Airtel?
M: You walked into this room, and I have said Airtel like right now when I say Airtel, what
are the things that comes onto your mind?
R: Colouring,
M: colouring, hmm hm what else can you tell me about airtel?
R: minutes, the most come thing is their network,
M: ahh wait all of us are speaking (laughs) we won’t be able to hear. That’s the challenge, I
teach us to note everything. For you to also make our work easy. So, you were telling me
minutes, hmm. I want to understand by what you mean by minutes.
R: Airtel minutes,
M: Every network has minutes, so what’s so special about Airtel minutes?
R: they are cheaper,
M: cheaper?
R: (laughs) they are the cheapest. But not all that hmm coz I used to subscribe for minutes
and at some points like they give you let me say 50 at first. You subscribe for 50 minutes like
over its 1100 shillings, then with time you find that they change. 50 minutes now you find
that you subscribe for like 1250 shillings I don’t know why. It’s because ah when….. okay ok
the first time you use it its cheaper because I think you are new to the network and then
when.. I think you overused it. Its like upgrading you. Hmm but then for new entrants its
always cheaper.
M: hmm what else can you tell me more about airtel?
R: data bundles is cheap
M: hmm hm what’s there with their data bundles?
R: yeah, they are, I realised that they increased,
M: like from how much to how much
R: the ones for1000 they used to be 100 MBs but now they are giving 180. So there’s that
increment of 80. They increased, kind of increased
M: hmm what else can you tell me about airtel.
R: and then what of their monthly packages, there’s a way they changed them of recent 20 Gb
is at 22Gb but still at 50,000. Then they have the one which was 65 Gb is now 81 Gb but they
are selling it at 150,000 yet the 65 was at 150,000 the changes in their data package and the
prices. And then they have one problem when you load their data bundles, let me say you
have loaded chillax, their data always runs so fast (laughs). So actually, I think when you buy
their monthly data is better than the chillax bundle coz their chillax bundle runs so fast.
M: Chillax is the bundle that doesn’t expire?
R: yeah, but they run very fast(laughs). It has the diarrhoea(laughs) am sure it runs very fast
M: ahh ah what else do we know apart from those 4, the minutes, data,, chillax. What else?
R: oh, there’s some app of Chapchap, hmm when you use airtel Chap, okay its cheaper and
faster than using MTN chap.
M; Hmm the chapchap is what now?
R: it’s like an airtel mobile money agent, kind of app. Okay as me I don’t use airtel, but I
always see airtel participating in social activities such as the kabaka run to solicit funds
maybe to help a certain group of people.
M: hmm, what else do we know, have we heard about Airtel, what we like, what don`t like?
So, you guys don’t use airtel? You only know about the minutes.
R: hmm (laughs) not really, okay personally I use it for business, selling, transacting,
withdrawing, depositing, selling data, things of a kind. what I don’t like about airtel is their
tax force, they are like they don’t give us bonus (unclear laughs).
M: which company does that?
R: MTN, MTN gives us even bonus, minutes, gives us like the ones for coins, even
congratulates you on your birthday, even minutes for your birthday, data. But even airtel
gives.
M; I forgot to give you a disclaimer that in fact for a discussion everyone has a different
opinion. So yeah, another one has a different action.
R: I used Airtel phone since senior six vacation because I started house haling in senior six
vacation. I have used airtel since then, I have never got a bad mistake from airtel. (laughs)
maybe you didn’t register, maybe you used someone else’s ID for registration. They do send
me a happy birthday because I used my mom’s ID to get a card, for her point, they sent her a
happy birthday Juliet, they gave her 500 MBS. Airtel maybe it’s done to this new registered
sim cards not the old ones.
M: Is it the least you have got?
R: not really, hmm am not going into details anyway
M: So, ah when I say MTN, what comes to your mind? What are those things that comes to
your mind?
R: MTN
M: she has already started, ahh ah so the rest of you can follow, so what can you tell me
about MTN Angella you are so quiet, are you still here? (laughs) You know some people
pretend to switch off, the body is here but they are not here.
R: Honestly the perception some people have about MTN, MTN is expensive, MTN is for the
rich,
M: Why do people think like that?
R: Because they think Airtel is cheaper year, Secondly MTN
M: Have you seen MTN come out to say oh we are expensive,
R: No, we are not expensive, okay when they try to compare the minutes they buy from
Airtel and MTN they find airtel is a bit cheaper.
M: Do you have a MTN line?
R: yes, I do
M; do you use it?
R; yes
M; do you also have an airtel line?
R; yes
M; so, you compare for me in terms of prices, okay you usually buy minutes of how much?
R: usually, actually I do their Pakalast for MTN.
M; that’s how much?
R; 550 shillings, they give me 25 minutes
M; they give you 25?
R; yeah
M; And airtel?
R; it depends coz I have one where they give me 950 minutes, okay they are not 950 mins but
they are 50 mins for just 950 and there is a bonus of MBs on top of that yeah.
M; at 500 shillings, how much do you get on airtel?
R; 500? Those are just 10 minutes of kawa.
M; hmm okay.
R; and then their data prices, ahh 1gb of MTN freedom bundles is 5000 shillings and then
airtel has chillax which is same is 5.
M; hmm what else can you tell me about MTN? Angela tells me?
R: Generally, their monthly bundles are expensive for people would opt for that. Secondly,
and they are less, yeah let me say their 10 gb is 50 but then airtel has 20 gb at 50. Hmm they
are some bundles airtel offers that MTN doesn’t offer.
M: like which one?
R: 1.5gb and MTN doesn’t offer that but currently they are giving out 1.5gb
M: on MTN?
R: when you check the menu, they brought the 1.5 gb actually a bought it for a guy yesterday.
Hmm initially it wasn’t there.
M; okay, Angela? Hmm tell me about MTN
R: about MTN, what I know about MTN like according to the Mobile money stuff, MTN is
kind of risky like for the mobile money agent. Someone can put in a pin like which is wrong
and before you know, you think he or she has done withdrawing like am talking about the
withdrawing part yeah you can find that you can give the person your money.
M: hmm are you an agent?
R: no but
M; as a customer, do you have an MTN line?
R; me
M; yes, but you heard customers not an agent what have they said about MTN?
R; MTN it has a bad network
M; in terms of data, in terms of what?
R; in terms of data,
M; hmm hm what else can you tell me about MTN?
R; I have heard of MTN Momo pay, I really don’t know they story about okay just see
adverts of just Momo pay.
MTN pulse have a lot of give aways. They use various set of promotions and give people
money. I believe MTN has the best adverts. Yeah
M; what are those?
R; the time checks
M; why do you say that they are the best?
R; they are the best because they are entertaining, they are upcutting, they inject a lot of
money into advertising, their adverts come out very nice. And then one other thing which is
actually very simple some people why they don’t want to use MTN mobile money the fact
that when you go to withdraw money from money agents, you give their your number and
you have to put their your pins but then you may find someone has your number, goes to the
MTN agent, withdraw money, gives their your number and you by mistake you just see it
your phone an you just or enter your pin and you put it in, all your money is gone. It’s very
risky.
As for airtel you initiate it yourself and you withdraw your money. I wish if they could do it
like that, it would be better but then that I can just get her number, I want money from this
number and if she’s absent minded or if she’s maybe not really concentrated shell just put in
the pin and say oh.
Actually, even this people who always call simanyi put in your, okay those abafade, they
always use MTN than Airtel.
M; okay so when it comes to events, which telecom company engage in different events? So,
when it comes to MTN, what is that event that they bring in, involved in that is so memorable
you’re like when they talk about MTN the event you have been in is this one and never forget
it? Which event have they participated in that you can’t forget?
R: the one that where they are giving cash to people
M: which one is that?
R; I think its chamuka, not chamuka, oba Momo, but its still around Momo yeah but then
they were giving out cars around that. And then they could even repair homes for people, and
I remember that thing.
M; hmm that’s MTN?
R; Yeah!
M; the rest of us, Esther? What events that MTN engaged herself in that you will never
forget?
So we don’t know MTN?
R; (Unclear response)
M; you mean MTN doesn’t get involved in events that you can recall?
R: okay MTN usually gets involved, okay I think they are called sponsors when there’re
certain events let me say music shows, ah maybe like some school events let me say mistily
and all that. It’s always get involved in such
M; and airtel, which events are they being involved in?
R: Kabaka run, that’s the first one, the National team the Uganda cranes yeah
M; What other events… only that eh? Okay I think I’ll start with Esther? Which networks do
you use?
R: I use Airtel
M; You use Airtel, only? Do you have any other network?
R; No but I’ll get one.
M; which one?
R; MTN
M; Why?
R: ah because most of my friends are and family members use MTN, so I find it so hard
communicating with them without the line. Hmm coz crossed line becomes expensive.
M; Okay how comes you only have Airtel?
R; ah it’s just my own use but I have been here wanting MTN
M; ahh Norah Which networks do you use?
R: I use Airtel
M: Only?
R; Actually I was using MTN but I didn’t replace it.
M; Why didn’t you replace it?
R; ahh someone else registered for me and she’s not around here
M; You don’t have a National ID
R; Currently I don’t.
M; hmm, hmm I know you can ask someone else to make for you an MTN line?
R: Am actually going to get my own ID soon so am going to be staying it with my ID.
M; hmm which network do you use?
R; MTN
M; Only?
R: Yes
M; You don’t have Airtel? How comes?
R; Okay I think I don’t have airtel like I don’t use Airtel because (unclear noise), its my dad
who registered for us the sim cards we are using.
M; So that he dictates for you(laughs). Victoria which networks do you use?
R: Both Airtel and MTN
M; Which one do you say its your main when it comes to calls?
R: MTN
M; When it comes to Data?
R: MTN
M; Overall?
R: MTN
M: How comes you use more of MTN than Airtel.
R; it’s because they give me points (laughs)
M; ahh Teddy which networks do you use?
R; Airtel
M; only?
R; yes
M; How comes?
R: All of us at home we have airtel (laughs)
M: You don’t want to change ehh?
R: I want to get MTN because they be promising me money and I want to have a line
(laughs)
M: Angela what networks do you use?
R; I use Airtel but I also have a Lyca Mobile line though I don’t over use it.
M; So Lyca you use it for data?
R: No I don’t. I used to use it for my data for now I only use airtel.
M; hmm haven’t I asked, Liberty which one do you use?
R: I use MTN and Airtel. Hmm ahh Airtel mostly for calls, data MTN.
M; hhmm okay, ahh Swiney, trying to pronounce the name but you still, hmm Swiney Which
one do you use?
R; Both
M; Both of what?
R; MTN and Airtel
M; Which one is your main?
R; Airtel
M; for calls?
R; Airtel
M; For data?
R; Airtel, ah yes mostly MTN
M; for data you mean you use MTN?
R; Yes
M; How comes?
R; Because even when I don’t have data and I connect the thing, messages come
automatically even if I don’t have data on MTN. So at times I see at times I don’t but
messages keep
Coming.
M; So how comes for calls you use Airtel?
R; Because Minutes are cheap on Airtel. Hmm yeah and because most of my contacts use
Airtel.
M; okay so ahh, am going to read some statements for you and then we shall continue with
our discussions basing on the statement. Am going to read them. Just a minute. (mummers).
Okay so ahh I think am going to give you such that you’re able to. I think the two of you will
share this. I don’t know we are going to do it but now I can’t give you this for also my copy.
So I think the few, let’s try to bring the chairs a bit closer as you share with the other one like
this eh. So are we all there? Okay page 13 specifically. I hope that’s where we all are. Okay
so ahh…
Okay we are going to read the second statement, doing shoots its shot, the second one is that
what it says?
R: Yes, Julie shoots its shot
M; hmm that’s the mania. When you hear that statement Doing Shoots its shot, tell me what
are the things that comes to your mind? Doing shoots its shot.
R: I think this state this statement can elaborate a situation whereby if you get something then
they say if you read hard, you’re shooting and then when you get like reading, understand,
you get a good result, hmm the shot is there. (Laughs). This is something like shooting the
shot is doing shoots its shot it’s like you are targeting something.
Yeah, hmm okay nowadays, there is this saying this guy is shooting his shots, but I have not
yet accepted. So
M; what does that means?
R; some guy is trying to vibe you. The person is shooting the short but not yet accepted so it’s
something like you are targeting something yeah ahh ahh.
M: And doing shooting its shots, what comes to your mind?
R; doing shoots its shots, okay like it’s like a process or let me say a strategy like to reach to
something you want but then you first put a strategy like the way you are going to approach
it. Yeah, you first strategize.
To me, it’s like if you have your set targets, it’s very easy for you to achieve them. Hmm if I
already have them like you have written them down like some goals. So, if you have them let
me say a form of writing or what, you find that it is easier for you to actually achieve them
because everything you do, you do basing on that definitely it becomes a shot.
M; First said my books back (laughs) doing shoot its shot, have you heard of this before?
R; yes
M; is it something you seen or wrote it somewhere?
R; we have read it.
M; where?
R; when it does not have but from doing. Yeah
M; so where do you see it.
R; WhatsApp messages, Twitter actually it’s just a saying among people.
M: is it among the young people or youth?
R; the youth
M; hmm faith, how about the entire statement doing shoots its shot?
R; its rare, the doing part is not always there but just shooting your shots(laughs)
M; you said what does it mean?
R; targeting something like you are targeting something
M; okay what are your feelings, what do you think about that headline?
R; doing shoots its shot
M: what do you think its communicating anyway?
R; MTN?
M; I don’t know
R: okay if its for MTN, maybe MTN is trying to….
M; how is that connected to MTN? to start with.
R; okay because hmm
M; because what?
R: personally, why I would connect it to MTN, hmm let me say they want to bring in a new
package of minutes, let me say want to find some minutes and they are going to be cheaper.
So they can be like buy our MTN minutes, they are cheaper so that you can shoot your shots
to your girl.
M; how can that connect you to airtel?
R; okay because MTN oh Airtel has not done it before. Secondly with the book (laughs)
yellow in colour so its easy to relate MTN (laughs).
M; not MTN, (laughs)
R: ahh we just said MTN because,
M; so, assuming you haven’t seen the book, and someone says that doing shoots its shorts,
R; doing shoots its shots, of course we shall take it the other way round all the people always
say. Anything even if it was airtel that its trying to target something maybe customers, it has
brought minutes, shooting its shots okay ok. Cheaper, it has made minutes cheaper because
its trying to shoot its shot yeah to the customers.
M; oh okay, is there anything else you think its trying to communicate?
R; I think those are strategies. Its their interest strategies set sometimes like shoots are
strategized. What are you going to follow to do something? Hmm right, Yeah how maybe
you are convincing someone.
Hmm shooting your shot, according to the youth, when they are using that statement. Most of
them are using the statement in lines of relationships like a guy is vibbing a girl and he’s
shooting trying to convince this girl
M; hmm people have not said anything. Like there are some people who are quiet. Naro have
you said something on this one? Tell me what you have, what comes on your mind? What do
you think its called
R; committing, targeting,
M; which kind of people do you think will be interested in such a headline? Me I don’t know,
which age starts from which age?
R: from 18
M; 18 to what?
R; 18 to 35, okay the normal age right now is 15, 16 coz a form 4 kid is already knowing
what’s going on. (mummers)
M; why do we have that young category?
R; why, because everyone is too exposed. Hmm yeah and they are really active on the
televisions, the movies everything they watch on TV makes them exposed.
M; hmm hmm what are the two of you trying to communicate?
R; (Laughs)
M; so is it that an incline that we like, does it even make meaning for us, or it doesn’t?
R; it does because its so common nowadays its interesting.
M; so what do you like about it?
R: we just love the saying. It looked classic
M; it looks classic?
R; Yeah the fact that it is already in circulation so once you break it, someone understand it
will actually someone understands immediately when you say it.
M; hmm what would this kind of headline lead to within your age group? What do you think
it means to people within your age group?
R; the relation part of it.
M: doing shoots its shot, they will think of relationship, eh?
R; first yeah, doing shoots its shot. What are they trying to mean or maybe, actually the
easiest way we can say it is we can connect it to minutes hmm yeah.
M; Teddy seems to be lost, are you still here? What do you think people in your age group
means when seeing the word shoots its shots? You know for us we try to brainstorm about it.
What do you think they will think?
R; relationship.
M; relationship? What could that be about relationship would they think?
R; its mostly used for people in relationships otherwise for minutes I don’t see how it is
related. It’s a common thing for relationship, yeah maybe you are trying to make someone.
M; its not that catchy like you said so am here thinking like yeah there might be reason
people didn’t like it like me
R; Because maybe you have not heard of it before. (laughs)
M; in this discussion am as green as a leaf I don’t know anything. So tell me what haven’t
you liked about it? I don’t think you lie to yourself
R; (mummers) the doing word, it makes it looks complicated.
M; what makes it looks complicated?
R; (mummers) the fact that they have brought in the doing thing, so for us we are not kinda
used to it.
M; when you hear the word doing, what does it mean?
R; its more of one activity, right? Yeah doing something. Secondly it has not been used. And
its has not been used, its not familiar with the statement.
M; So what do you think the word doing adding it to shoots its shots….?
R; it even becomes funny itself (laughs)
M; Why?
R; shoots its shots, its even complicated, there is that part of doing, it change the meaning like
the way they have been doing about relationships. So when they added that part of doing, it
changes.
M; it changes the meaning?
R; like that relationship field you field something a bit too shocked.
M; it goes out of something like relationships?
R; okay kind yeah kind of. Like doing have a high stop. Doing adds a subject to narratives
convincing for jobs or apparently my job.
M; needs action eh?
R; hmm doing something like it shoots something
M; Do you think it will have an international appealing. Would this statement mean anything
to people outside Uganda? Internationally do you think it will be appealed.
Now you’re thinking hard (laughs). Okay what do you think? Do you think it will have an
international output to be people outside, in your same age group but to people outside?
R; oh I think it would,
M; it would? Hmm hmm why?
R; since its in English other countries maybe other, yeah they mostly use English so. Here in
Uganda is more of relationship kind of, maybe they could also opt to that. You know when
you break a specific word like how they broke the word osirike and then even non Ugandans
don’t know about it so they do want to know what that Osirike, what do mean it. So when
you bring it out and people get used to it, they’ll capture it.
M; Because its funny?
R; yeah it would sound funny to them I think they even don’t know the meaning of it like
what do you guys always on it. Once something is common, other people easily adapt but
one if its not common, it becomes very hard.
M; which product do you think it could be a statement from a telecom company like we are
ready going to talk about, so am wondering okay, it’s a statement from a telecom company.
What product do you think its trying to promote?
R; Promoting internet bundles,
M; why do you think they are promoting it?
R; you can use those internet bundles to shoot your shoots.
M; Hmm (laughs) so you want to confuse me in many ways (laughs)
R: the statement am trying to bring it out in this way, the statement was making sales to the
telecom company. So it is of value to the telecom company. I think the company shooting its
shot to convince the society to buy these certain internet bundle packages for their daily use.
M; so for you, you are thinking its for promoting?
R; you know there are so many products and services from telecom companies like when
comes even am just putting like an example, may when it comes to maybe internet bundle,
there could be may products that offer internet bundles, you’ll find that here my what what,
so you’ll find maybe this other products they have events that they give different products but
you know this one they have internet, this one they have voice, this one we have internet and
what. You get that kind of thing. All this people are doing shoot its shot.
M; Which kind of products do you think its trying to promote?
R: Minutes, its voice, actually minutes and data
M; why data and minutes?
R; because they are mostly used. I can get some data and I want to shoot my shot with this
girl and I fit in (laughs).
M; okay so my next statement says doing rises the bar.
R; doing……
M; ehh (Luganda language laughs) doing raises the bar.
R; it means doing raises the bar, doing an activity hmm it helps you to a certain level other
than just seating watching something so if you want raise the bar hmm always something you
have to do about it, something to put in efforts.
Doing something raises the bar, you can not just seat back in your comfort zone and then you
just wait for results.
That’s why we have that saying that acts speak better than words. That doing are the acts, so
the acts maybe you do raise the bar.
M; hmm hm hmm? Doing raises the bar, what comes to your mind, what do you think comes
on your mind? Who do you think its trying to target, what are they communicating?
R; Probably they want to go ahead and want to give a way back to society or their customers.
So they be like the more you buy our minutes the rate per as the fees.
Like the more you carry out advertising the more they’ll gain customers in terms of telecom
companies that’s what ma trying to mean. So they have to do something in order to gain more
customers.
M; hmm Angela don’t look so high, (laughs) we are trying to brainstorm what comes to your
mind doing raises the bar, what else are they trying to you know to talk about, what are they
communicating, who are they targeting comparing to that statement?
R: coz different statements coming through different categories of people
M; What do you think they are trying to communicate? Doing raises the bar
R; doing raises the bar, (unclear) when you say that doing raises the bar sometimes if you
are doing, everything has an award. Hmm yeah if you buy minutes from MTN, if you transact
some money using MTN line, you get rewarded that’s obvious that’s the bar that’s an award.
There is something you get like an outcome.
M; so what you said you got an outcome? (Laughs) you have been quiet. Doing raises the bar
what are you trying to mean? What are they trying to communicate, what are they trying to
tell us, who are they targeting by the way?
R; they target customers
M; raise it by examples. Always love giving by examples because they help us to get an idea
of what am asking. Hmm which example can I give, I usually love giving the examples
R; hmm you can use sodas
M; hmm yeah sodas, so there are these two top brands in the country. Okay we have, the
companies are two, century then coca cola okay people call it coca cola but the brand coca
cola and another one you get. All those are common companies and then we have crown
beverages which also makes mountain dew and what and what.
So ahh when we start with mountain dew, they have their tagline for mountain dew you get,
they also have a colour, shape of the bottle. You can clearly say that they trying to target a
specific group. Whom do you think they are targeting in mountain group? Mountain group?
R: specifically mountain group?
M; yes mountain group. Who loves mountain dew?
R; kids, kids may go for fanta.
M; who else loves mountain dew?
R: boys, men. This athletic boys.
M; then there’s Pepsi, its from the same company!
R: Pepsi is for the matured
M; But when they are producing Pepsi they don’t say this is for the matured or adult? Yeah
but when you see that advert, but you can be able to know this is the category people they are
targeting. Yeah it’s the same thing for this statement am reading or whatever we are going to
go through. It can target all customers of the telecom companies but it has a specific category
or people. You find a soda like Stoney or Crest, there is even that Stoney water so its good
for you. When you need it or not but it’s for diabetic but it doesn’t mean that you who does
not have diabetes when you take up you die, no you can take it. Marinda Fruity it’s a soda for
kids and women coz women love sweet things it doesn’t mean that if am the one take it or its
really abominable day you get.
Coca cola is a product for men, yeah Stoney is a product for men, I hope you get what am
trying to explain
R; yeah
M; It doesn’t mean that when this companies are making this products, they are making this
products they say women you should not drink it ahh you can take it but their target is men.
Even their adverts you will clearly see that they are trying to target men. For us women we
love bright colours, we love things which are happy and what now coca cola is a dark colour.
A woman, we put up into consideration when consuming something. So that’s something
with this.
So when you hear doing raises the bar, which category of people do you think its targeting?
R; the youth
M; the youth? You know even in youth they are in different social classes, which kind of
youth do you think it is trying to target?
R; the old aged youth, a bit mature
M; which age?
R; age 23, around bracket of 25, 20,
M; what do you think? So we take about 22 and above. But why that kind of mature age?
R; ahh I think its that because like at that age in most cases, there are some things you can do
at a tender age and you can do when you are 20 and you can’t it at 40. So its better to raise
your bar at that age so that that time of 40, 50 maybe you are good to go. You can relax, seat
and then things just workout. You work hard at that time.
In terms of doing something, they get you, you start being serious around the pitch at that
age.
M; if you’re to hear this word, doing raises the bar. If it’s a company or a brand, which brand
do you think it is coming over it? You stay and you hear ahh doing raises the bar. Which
company or which brand its coming from?
R: from the telecom world, if I do not know anything or I had not connected earlier on to
MTN earlier or anything, I will think maybe Nile breweries. What if maybe other companies
like make a post raising the bar is like they are talking about bar like what’s about alcohol.
M; alcohol, doing raises the bar, which company or brand comes on your mind?
R; it can be a radio
M; which specific radio
R; maybe a phone, why? Just because if you have a phone, anything can be worked on. You
can do business on a phone, you can pay your services on a phone, you can, anything can
come up when you have a phone.
And actually that statement had been somewhere before.
M; where have you heard it from?
R; it was on a TV show, it was some TV show
M; who are those?
R; ah I don’t think but it was a Thursday, it had Gaetano and some other guy actually
connected to sports. Yeah TV show had guys connected to sports. Its either NTV, NTV
actually.
M; Actually going to reach my next question, that does this sounds familiar?
R; yeah it sounds familiar
M; in our age groups, what would this kind of statement be? You young people have a way of
connecting things (laughs) just tell her what’s that and I (laughs).
R; raising the bar, we are going to the bar, we are going to spend money or maybe we are
going to raise money for the beach
M; spending?
R: yeah spending
M; what do you think it means?
R; its like an encouraging statement to me doing raises the bar like the more you focus you
aim higher
M; so ahmm what do you think they are trying to promote, what products do you think they
are trying to promote? Which other companies are bringing this, what do you think they are
trying to promote?
R; hard work hmm encouraging you maybe to use their certain products so that you can get
something in return out of using it like commission.
M; so if its from a telecom company, what products are they trying to promote?
R; their transactions, mobile money transactions.
How does it comes to the doing? Like the more you transact the more you get commission.
You can maybe get more points.
Doing raises the bar for example I use ChapChap mainly for airtel but the more you use it,
there is that commission you get. For airtel every transaction you make, there is 79%
commission. So that doing yeah.
M; so if you are to change anything what do take about? Its there something that didn’t sound
convenient to you?
R; basing on the fact that it has been on somewhere before so right now to me I’ll be like it
has been somewhere before.
Me I know the word varies someone can misinterpret it (mummers, laughs) into something
else.
M; so you guys a moment when you hear guys saying raising the bar (laughs)
R; like for the youth immediately, it comes back to their mind.
M; okay our last statement for this particular segment, I want us to also go and take some
breakfast. Doing stays on the grind. grind is (grind+spells). Doing stays on the grind.
R; (mummers)
M; that one is already complicated (laughs) even thinking about it its complicated
R; (mummers) first and fore most I scored the grind means, me personally I don’t know what
grind means.
Even me I don’t know. (laughs)
M; you’re confused already (laughs) now how will I ask my questions.
R: Personally what I understand by grind, the know the grinding and that’s the grind I know.
M; do what?
R: okay in villages the do grinding, is it grinding or grinds? Grinds.
To me its rubbing
M; okay when you finish telling me ahh ah?
R; Okay me what I have kinda got from the doing something stays on the grind like doing
something can either remain or stay in the system. Hmm that’s what I got. Ohh like you
introduce something and it remains there into the system.
M; hmmm Naro what were you saying?
R; amm going to give a narrow meaning of that maybe what you do, whatever you do it
remains yours, what you do remains with you.
M; hmm so what’s grind means doing something continuously?
R; Like working hard and remaining, like you don’t talk you get, you do something
continuously that’s what grind means.
M; ahh so this one is so confusing for you eeh eh?
R; yeah
M; What is confusing you, is it the. English or what?
R; the English, the grind.
M; What is wrong with the statement, doing stays on the grind
R; it’s not normal, it’s the first time I have heard it. (murmurs)(laughs)
M; What do you think some products are they trying to promote?
R; (laughs)
M; what is the message, there is always a message, words are always not just like that, what
do you think it’s a message, doing stays on the grind.
R; (laughs)
M; this one is hard ehh, ate now unfortunately I cannot leave unless you give me an
answer.so we are up here. (laughs) because now I need answers and I also need what is
confusing you, it is also an answer. I need to understand, I have to ask until I get what is
confusing you
R; according to me, let me try to explain it in Luganda, like the more you take care of
yourself the more you stay well, and the more you work out the more you stay fit.
M; so, do you think this would be a feeling to people of your age group?
R; hmm.
M; so this one is targeting which category now?
R; the high (laughs) masters, PhDs, okay probably targeting our very very own parents who
have gone to school. (Laughs)
M; okay we are going to take a very short break, I understand people are in exams so I don’t
want to delay you guys so much okay. So, lets take a very short break. There is some tea
there, pick a cup of tea and come back ate we are ladies, ate in Buganda we don’t eat while
we are talking, so you pick a cup of tea and something to eat, you eat very fast. So am going
to give you about three minutes then we continue with our discussion. Its 10:25 so by 10:30
we should be done with our tea.
(breakfast)
Am going to read you other statement then we shall discuss about them.
Ahh my first statement says, the Swag won’t drip itself, the swag won’t drip itself. What
comes to your mind when you hear that? The swag won’t drip itself.
Angle, tell me what comes on your mind? The swag won’t drip itself. It’s a very simple
English. Hmm
R; a swag can be a good one, it can be any name but the person who (unclear), she’s like I
want to take a pic, right. The person who brings out the dread.
M; Dread means what?
R; (murmurs)
M; hmm hm the swag won’t drip itself. What comes to your mind? Teddy? The swag wont
drip itself, what comes to your mind?
R; passion
M; what do you mean by passion?
R: like it’s a word, obviously comes past drip(unclear). To bring out
M; hhm I have not understood what she’s saying (laughs)
R: you have to first look smart
M; sorry,
R: you have to first look smart like you feel like(unclear)
M; hmm I didn’t understand what you were saying
R: in otherwards it will not comes up if you don’t show it up like even if the shoe is
swaggerific, nice if you don’t put it out, no one will see that its with swag. If you don’t blend
it well, with maybe nice cloths, it will not come out.
M; finish the ka message you are sending, urgent then you keep the phone eh. The swag wont
drip itself. What comes to your mind, what do you think they are trying to communicate?
Who are they targeting? Have you ever heard of it or its totally new?
R; okay for the word drip its not, no other word is new but the combination.
M; What is wrong with the combination? So this is the drip that am meaning.
R; yes
M; I don’t know if we are able to see, yeah. We are able to see right?
R; yeah
M; What were you telling me about the combination, what is wrong with the combination?
R; (murmurs) the combination is catch,
M; hmm, Naro what comes to your mind? The swag wont drip itself
R; its like if you don’t do something, it can not some out. Its like getting ahh clothing, shoes,
and get a dress, some shoes and then someone will be like if you put on those clothes, who
will put it for you. Its like if you do this, you won’t get it.
To me swag drip itself its like ah, okay relating to let me say fashion, if you don’t put an
initiative in making something to come out, obviously it wont. Yeah you have to take the
initiative to make i.
M; what do you think they are trying to communicate, what are they targeting?
R; youth, by the way youths,
M; they are targeting youth?
R; yeah
M; that’s the common word among the youth, have you heard of something like this before?
R; yes
M; which company or brand do you think is trying to bring us something like this?
R: Fashion, something to do with fashion yeah
M; why?
R; because swag bit is mostly used in fashion, dress codes,
M; do you think this kind of statement would appeal to other youths out there?
R; it can appeal as long as it’s not connected to a telecom company
M; What’s wrong with it being connected to a telecom company?
R; because it doesn’t match, like are we going to put on MTN like to drip, are we going to put
on Airtel like to drip?
But it can, even if you put on an airtel attire(murmurs)
In most cases if something swaggerific is in need, like for airtel I don’t see it.
Maybe the deal a give a way of cloths to people so they were like we want people to get so
we shall give them cloths.
M; To young people you are thinking about fashion, but do you think to other people it would
be having another meaning?
R; yes let me say dealing with telecom companies, the swag let me say they are trying to
make out like ahh an advert to bring it out, something unique but if they don’t make it unique,
people won’t feel it or it won’t shine. So they have to put an initiative to make it swaggerific
like in the even cool for it to drip. For me that’s the way I see it.
M; that’s the way you get that word (laughs). Hmm so how about outside, internationally, do
you think the statement drip catching?
R: yeah
M; what did you like about this product headline by the way? Its trying to market its peak
product, what do you like about it? Because apparently we don’t know which kind of
products its trying to target. What do you like about it?
R; the swag like let me say you just want to look good from anywhere, you have to put In
efforts.
M; I didn’t hear that?
R; like you won’t just look good from anywhere, you have to put in efforts to look good. If its
not fashion, its fashion (laughs)
M; what kind of products do you think it trying to target? Is trying to promote? Even in
fashion there are different products, what do you think, what exactly do you think?
R; the cloths,
M; which cloths, there are different types of cloths, so which one?
R; yes they can be different but there some swaggerific dresses, trousers.
M; I feel like you give me like the examples of soda, you remember the examples of sodas I
have been giving you. They are all sodas but each of them is different. So which kind of
cloths even if they are cloths, what kind of clothes?
R; in most cases, if I use to like the damaged parts. Hmm they take them to be more unique
and maybe someone looks swaggerific when they put them on.
M; Okay, what confuse you about this statement? What confuse you about the product line?
R; there are swags that can be categorized under music.
M; hmm can also go into music?
R; yes when someone has good music, someone can be like you have nice music you have
swag.
M; hmm okay
R; maybe they are trying to promote the caller tune
M; maybe they are trying to?
R; to promote the caller tune
M; could be a caller tune ehh? That is if it’s from a telecom company. Hmm actually I don’t
know whether its from a telecom company or. But now you have taken it in that direction, let
me ask in that direction?
It says apart from music and if its from a telecom company, what product do you think it
could be promoting?
R; MTN, caller tune basically maybe for a certain musician and someone is like I want you to
play to promote, I want to strike a deal with you so I want you to promote this song of mine
so that we both get shares in it.
M; okay, anything else we love to say about it, nothing ehh?
Are we about Cecelia? Everyone read it for me.
R; The won’t read itself
M; ahh tell me what comes to your mind? Now that we can see, what comes to your mind?
Have we seen this before? Yes Angela I want you to start. Ahh start, these are normal English
here. The script won’t read itself, tell me what it is all about? What do you think they are
trying to tell you?
R; I heard of it somewhere.
M; you heard of it somewhere, where did you hear it from?
R; literature classes,
M; hmm what was it trying to mean?
R; a group or a person follows to act, maybe it falls under the category of act. So for a script
to come out, someone has to act. If it’s a song, it’s a play, it’s a poem, yap for that the script
to feel itself, it can’t come out if you don’t have anything to make it. The script won’t reap
itself.
M; I said we are here to brain storm eh, now when you keep quiet you are not doing me
justice. The first we are already short of time, What comes on your mind, what is it that you
are trying to talk about?
R; to me that statement, okay its like they are trying to communicate something to someone
like “kale Omuntu ngooba obanga oyeita” to me. So its like an encouraging statement. Trying
to encourage someone.
M; hmm the rest of us, what are they trying to communicate? Yes
R; hmm like something will not move on unless you have to second it.
Speaking of teamwork,
M; talked about teamwork, what are you trying to say?
R; the strip wont clip itself to my understanding, my mind keeps telling me that according to
that statement, let me bring it in a live of academics, if you don’t read your books you wont
succeed. You may not get the grade you want. No one is going to read for you like someone
will read on your behalf and then it enter like in your brains.
M; You have to act. Hmm who do you think this is targeting? Which kind of people do you
think its targeting?
R; to me I think its students only, the way I have understood it
M; for students eh?
R; yes
M; if you don’t put yourself to read the books also wont just favour you. Students in
particular. R; Let me say university students, we, if you don’t carry out research, you don’t
what what, attend lectures, things wont be good on your side. So you have to also put in some
efforts.
M; yes
R; I think it also attaches business practitioners, hmm people who are joining business you
may think it will be a positive activity
M; hmm, you need to act positively
R; Yeah
M; okay hmm what do you think this would mean to the young people of your age? Do you
think it will have the same meaning or will carry a different meaning?
R; the same meaning
M; is it that you do it or you like it.
R; No.
M; so all of us like it (laughs)
R; people who are good at reading will achieve like me(unclear)
M; What haven’t you liked about it?
R; Its competent, the meaning is idle yeah.
M; What haven’t you liked about it? Keep your phones guys, for now so that you can
concentrate so that I can let you go by midday actually at 11:30 not midday.
Hmm What haven’t you liked about it? Or what in particular have we liked?
R; hmm it kinda wont be so appealing to the youth.
M; for sure its appealing to which category?
R; teachers (laughs)
M; What didn’t you liked about it?
R; its hidden,
M; what’s the meaning? (laughs) tell me what’s the meaning. (laughs)
R; okay to me I thought like the script wont clip itself had to come up to do something so that
may it can change. Okay like something you are dreaming about you have to come out by
doing it so that it can happen. For me that’s the meaning.
M; okay so ahhm the other one I want us to discuss is the short won’t shoot itself. Be fast so
that we can move on. The short shoots itself. What has come to your mind?
R; According to me, its like we have to be engaged for something to come up. For a shoot to
shot yeah, put in your energy, like do something
M; the shot wont shoot itself,
R; You can not like something if you don’t put it more efforts like if you just seat, whatever
what you want, you have to put yeah.
For you to pass you have to read. Hmm nothing comes on a silver plate so you have to first
work for it, put in efforts.
M; Who are they communicating to by the way? Ahh every time you are thinking of
everyone (laughs) remember it has a meaning for specific category
R; Parents, students,
M; Teddy whom do you think they are communicating to? hhmm
R; company,
M; why?
R; because all of them have to put in efforts
M; so what products are they promoting?
R; depending on which company, any.
M; we are just brainstorming, so for you choose the company where you think they are
applied. What are the products do you think they are promoting?
R; for this telecommunication companies, if they don’t advertise they will not get what they
want because there is that kind of competition. So let me say MTN and Airtel, if one
advertises and then the other one relaxes, like they will push this one out of the market. For
them to out compete, they have to, all of them have to engage.
Yeah the shot shoots itself.
M; What have we liked about it?
R; Its inspiring,
M; what is there that you said? So in lemans language what do think is all about? Me I don’t
want people to think so much. Just tell what’s open. When you read it like that, what do you
think it means?
R; what came to my mind was just a mistake.
M; why?
R; because of the action, actually I read it and synchronize it with yourself.
M; What do you mean it, at first at was a pistol. What do you mean by pistol, afterwards it
has meaning, you see when you see something like it doesn’t have meaning, it loose meaning.
So what do you think it means now? Read it very well and try to understand it, it has a
meaning. There is something they are trying to communicate. What have you liked and what
haven’t you liked about it? What have you liked about it?
R; its encouraging and encourages like it makes someone equate them like you shouldn’t be
settled down. I have a feeling that all these statements are encourage. Hmm yeah is it?
M; I don’t know! (laughs)
R; They are all motivational statements,
M; They are all motivational statements eh?
R; they are different (laughs)
M; Now you want to take my jobs eh (laughs) okay am going to share with you some
logos and then we are going to discuss about them and indeed you try my questions.
Okay so am….. make sure you come a bit closer so that you can share
Don’t open anywhere else, just open only the page am going to share with you. So we…
some of us can still mind. Look at the logo we are discussing, what comes to your mind?
R; To me the first look at on the right, on my left hmm, it’s a bit eye catching.
M; let me level this thing so that am are able to recall. So, I’ll put this one and when you’ll
refer either number one, or number 2 right? Yeah, because I won’t be able to see that in an
open code. So you are telling me which one?
R; To me number one is eye catching in that am a person who loves catching, like drawing.
M; Both have the same thing so which one is it,
R: The word pause has those things that are (unclear, laughs)
M: And then now I crossed some images not words, so you guys will be able to illustrate.
R; and then number 2 is just an ordinary thing
M: hmm what is ordinary
R; just common thing,
According to me number 1, ah like acting
M: Number 2 is for what,
R; Number 2 is boring
M: What is boring about number 2?
R: Just fair
M; Maybe apart from colours, so its obvious
R; Number 1 is eye catching and number 2, okay its eye catching, boring and, okay it’s not
really too catching but then if the attire had improvement.
M: So you said that number 1 is going to be used like when they are doing activations,
installations, ehh? Like things to do already, google and to what and what. Then number 2 is
basically be used for the green house communications just to know the difference.
Yeah so tell me,
R; You should change the art. This one looks a bit faint; we should change the art by shoes.
M; You are taking me very speedy. Changes, I first want to get it. You know when you look
at something, what kind of feelings, what comes to your mind? Let’s start with number 1, the
one that has the lines, when you look at that Logo MTN Pulse, tell me what comes to your
mind? What do you think about it? Hmm what do you think they are trying to do? Is it the
message, what’s your opinion about it?
R; Feeling, Colour, everything
M; Let me first hear from Agnes
R; I think no one.
M; You don’t what? Unfortunately, I have no option because that is the very colour. The
colour can’t change. So, we are only discussing the other things but their colour can’t, their
brand colour. So, you discuss anything else apart from the colour.
R: I think they should change the colour
M: To which one
R: I think the first one is faint,
M: that you are trying to make it a bit more thick, more bold, eh? Hmm what else can you tell
me about that number 1?
R: They change the biography
M; So which one?
R: Better calligraphy.
M: Anti you tell me the better one, maybe that I don’t want it. Maybe you have a better one,
you can advise.
R: A better calligraphy that can bring out that a better one
M: You see when you tell me a better one, (unclear)
R: You can’t capture all the calligraphy but there are some others that I don’t know.
M: There are some comments that I may know, so that if this one is not working for you, you
can say you know what I want it like this or I want it like that. (laughs)
R: Algerians, bold, something like that. Algerian makes good graphics.
M: What do you think that number 1 is associated with?
R: (unclear) actually I think they just look at what someone else is trying to fit in
M: Sorry, Anything else will ah probably change, or add apart from making the word pulse a
bit small. What else can we change on it?
R: We can add something like pulse maybe in the middle part of it.
M: Hmm what else’s addition do we have for it? What don’t we like about it?
R: Its also too tight.
M: Oh oba how should it be? Hmm?
R: It should be got from the meaning of pulse.
M: What does pulse mean and what is needed to add there? You know when you tell me
should then it (unclear)
R: Some people don’t understand the word pulse, so they should put something that is maybe
commonly used, for people to understand what is meant by pulse.
Coz personally I don’t know what MTN pulse mean.
M: Have you ever heard about it?
R: Yes, yeah I have information about.
M: hmm people when you want something, you’ll ask and get the answer. (Laughs)
R: The first time I heard about pulse, it was some station called Pulse radio.
M: The two of you, what are you discussing? Hmm Logo Number 2, tell me more about it?
R: What I know
M: Which of these two have you seen before?
R: Number 2
M; Number 2?
R: Yeah, its ordinary
M: Its ordinary ehh? So if am giving you a job, how would you make it better?
R: I’ll leave the MTN part the way it is, and then maybe add some bit of carrier leg. I’ll
change the posing into something else, change the word in it. (laughs) its jumpy maybe I put
the pizza in it
M: which one is better?
R: The second one.
M: How many of us by show of hands, I want you to choose by the way between the two of
them, if you to give another opportunity to choose the one you go with, how many of us will?
R; me I’ll go with number 1
M: Number 1 is this one that we discussed first eeh, the next is number 2. So how many of us
will go with number 1? By show of hands, how many of us will go with number 2? Why
number 2? Teddy please try to speak faster and we move on. We have run short of time.
R: its visible, easily seen coz there are people who have eye problems not that everyone
would be able to see the pulse. Hmm visible and such writers have ever appeared before
MTN. Its common mbu its MTN everywhere you go something like that. Its kinda related to
this thing, its something common. It wont be new too compared to the other one and its very
clear.
M; Okay hmm, What else?
R: In otherwards its common, me I have never seen this other, anyway nothing else apart
from it. I have always seen the second one.
M: Do you have anything else to add on the logos or those are the services (laughs). Okay so
I want share with you some images, and then we shall continue. Don’t open my book unless I
tell you to open a particular page. So go to page 18, after page that black page, open the black
page as well. So those are the images I want to share with from that page up to page 26. Am
giving you about 3 mins to go through the pictures coz am going to ask questions, actually
you’re going to tell me. This one everyone has to answer because everyone has a different
opinion.
R: Up to which page?
M: Start from that page up to page 26, pay attention to the pictures. If it means reading please
read because the questions am going to ask are going to open behind. Start from the page
where you are up to page 26. Take your time, read the work, because am going to ask
questions that resonate around them.
If there is a particular picture that you may have really liked to need to get out better, pay
attention to it and then afterwards, tell me this picture is best. Have you seen these pictures
somewhere or they are new? Hmm? Have you seen some of them or they are new?
R: Some of them.
M: They are new? I don’t want you to eat words, if they are new, they are new. So if there is
a particular picture that is really nice out and bringing you MTN pulse, you’ll still tell me, I
think this picture is the best. I want to assume that we are almost done. So are we done? I said
we end on page 26. So we are done? I think that’s page 26, right?
R: Yeah
M: Are we done? Tell me what came to your mind when you saw these pictures? Ahh
R: the youth, actually its more related to something connected to data. Yeah and its like its
telling, its communicating something that do what you want most. According to the part I
saw.
M: Its encouraging you
R; to do what I want.
To me different activities are being done.
M: hmm like what?
R: Listening to music, swimming, there is some other one taking tea, dancing, someone is
skating.
To me if you really want to enjoy something, put in efforts. I see one is enjoying himself
leisure what what, you see how one is really struggling, you get. Bring it out of you want to
enjoy yourself.
M: Opinions are our classes, so I don’t know what the class is doing. (laughs). Meaning your
class is actually over time.
R: hmm okay classic like they are good and quality people. They are good looking, eye
catching
Actually forgive me I made a mistake, even this black TV is interesting but the good thing is
that it is also near. That oval has something so some image is to be considered. Even in that
first page you opened its also there. Something endless, an oral can maybe relate its all over
the world. An all-round thing.
I understand this picture, the context in it states that even if you are in the hardest situation, so
something probably to cut it.
M: hmm okay after going through the picture, tell me what it is telling us about MTN Pulse?
Teddy, from the pictures did you get anything about MTN Pulse?
R; Yeah
M: You got some information about MTN pulse, what do you think its communicating about
MTN pulse?
R: Its not yet, MTN Pulse is the whole thing, like MTN Pulse is an app where you can easily
stream, get the music, remove the stress on you(laughs) hmm, like they are selling data, that
you buy the data, you’re going to get something that you want. You can enjoy music,
download music using the data you bought.
M: What else is it telling us about MTN Pulse?
R: If you want for an exam, you can go and use MTN Pulse data
M: What else is it telling us about MTN Pulse? Winnie? You guys I gave you minutes to go
through this and I expect you to have answers.
R: I think its more, okay students mostly use it. I think there are also target customers
because what I know about MTN pulse it mainly targets the youth.
M; What is there in MTN Pulse, that’s what I want to understand?
R: Its about data, their data is cheap. Secondly, there’s easy communication, there is also on
the student’s bundle, there is at any time and night express, so it favours students. Because
they are the ones who mostly use social media. Get data for research. You can download
games, stream new videos. Motivating, Its actually a creativity.
M: What were you saying Angela?
R: okay its like they are selling data but then they are advertising something that you can use
data to do anything that you want. Or you can livestream,
M: hmm what did we like or what didn’t we like about these pictures?
R: What I liked about that picture is that they are communicative. They communicate
M; Are they bringing out what pulse offers?
R: Yeah. Actually there are some shows that you can download, then one that you can done,
you can google using the data, make research.
M; so what didn’t we like?
R: there are some images that don’t communicate. Now like this woman posing, she’s taking
a pic, even some others.
Some pictures are not communicative, okay they are communicative but they some pics are
(unclear).
M: Apart from those,
R: No there is this one, (laughs)….. MTN Pulse is a data app.
M: Its an app? Okay is there any change you want in the picture to make them worthy?
R: hmm not really, they are fine but there is this TV, eliminates sound, that one doesn’t
capture the sound.
M: Alright so as we are coming to the end of our discussion. Send my greetings.
So as we are coming to the end of our discussion now we have heard of MTN Pulse, how
comes you are not on MTN Pulse, those of you who have MTN Pulse.
R: The reason as to why I don’t have the app, is I haven’t got someone to explain it to me the
way how to use the app.
Secondly the app was not advertised
No they advertised it, its not everywhere like the way Airtel is. Its all that the adverts are not
so clear. Actually they advertised, what I know they came to campus, they’ll come and give
you the flier and maybe they won’t explain to you and you may not read them. Coz actually
before I found that MTN can give that MTN Pulse and now you get an app.
Its an app where we download and start getting data. It’s a lengthy process for example those
guys who come and ask do you have MTN Pulse and two weeks later, they are no where to
be seen. They need to be advertised more.
M: Okay, is there anything that MTN needs to do have you on board to use MTN pulse. Now
that you have read what its all about.
R; they need to explain more about it, more customer care, okay even if they don’t call, they
should advertise just like MTN Momo, they advertise MTN Momo very well.
M: Like you have never seen an advert of MTN Pulse?
R: They are very rare maybe on social media, then you see something like MTN Pulse. It
doesn’t bring out the vibe, they should also have an impact of what let me say moving like in
institutions like schools physically, but they do, boring. They do but I think the way they do
is not that much.
M: So we have come to the end of our discussion. Thank you very much for your time and
we appreciate you.
Is there any other comment in regards to what we have said today?
R: No Thank you.
