Science

The document is a student's notes from a science module about the periodic table of elements. It includes what the student knows from an activity, questions they have, and a key term about valence electrons determining an atom's properties and reactivity.

Science The Outermost Level

Electrons in the outermost energy

significance. These electrons are
called valence electrons, and they
determine many of the properties of
an atom. An atom is most stable if its

many electrons as it can hold.

What’ In (Activity 1. Parts

of the Periodic Table of the
Elements)

Questions:

1) The vertical columns on the

periodic table are called groups or
families because of their similar
chemical behavior. While the
horizontal rows are what we called
periods.
2) Left. The metals are to the left
of the line (except for hydrogen,
which is a nonmetal). The
nonmetals are to the right of the
line.
3) Those elements with 4, 5, 6, or 7
in their outermost shell are the
nonmetals. Helium (with its 2),
neon, argon, and krypton (each
with 8) have "filled" their
outermost shells. They are the so-
called inert or "noble" gases.
They have no chemistry at all.
4) The number of electrons in the
outermost shell of a particular
atom determines its reactivity,
or tendency to form chemical
bonds with other atoms. This
outermost shell is known as the
valence shell, and the electrons
found in it are called valence
electrons.
5) valence electrons
