AOAC Official Method 967.03
Moisture in Peat
First Action 1967
Final Action 1978
A. Method I
Mix test sample thoroughly and place 10–12 g test portion in ig-
nited and weighed (with fitted heavy-duty Al foil cover) Vycor or
porcelain evaporating dish, ≥75 mL capacity. Crush soft lumps with
spoon or spatula. Cover immediately with Al foil cover and weigh to
nearest mg. Dry, uncovered, 16 h at 105°C. Remove from oven,
cover tightly, cool, and weigh.

Percent moisture (report to nearest 0.1%) =

(g as-received test portion – g oven-dried test portion)
× 100/g as-received test portion
B. Method II
(Use when pH, N, fiber, etc., are to be determined.)
Mix thoroughly and weigh 100–300 g representative test sample,
967.02 (see 2.7.02), and spread evenly on large flat pan. Crush soft
lumps with spoon or spatula and let come to moisture equilibrium
with room air ≥24 h. Stir occasionally to maintain maximum air ex-
posure of entire test sample. When weight is constant calculate loss
in weight as percent moisture removed by air drying. Grind repre-
sentative portion of air-dried test sample 1–2 min in high-speed
blender; use for moisture, ash, and N determinations.
Mix air-dried, ground test sample and weigh, to nearest mg,
equivalent of 10 g test portion on as-received basis (g air-dried test
sample equivalent to 10.0 g as-received test sample = 10.0 – [(10.0 ×
percent moisture removed)/100]). Place weighed test portion in ig-
nited and weighed (with fitted heavy duty Al foil cover) Vycor or
porcelain evaporating dish and proceed as in A.

Percent moisture (report to nearest 0.1%)

= (10.0 – g oven-dried test sample) × 10.0
