Ans. – Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire.

Ans.- Mauryan Empire covered a large part of India which included Bihar, Odisha, Bengal,
Western and parts of Deccan.

Ans. – Arthashastra was written by Kautilya or Chanakya. The main ideas of this book
were to highlight the political, economic, military and administration of the Mauryans.

Q. 2 – From where did the Mauryans get funds to run their their vast empire?
Ans. – The Mauryans got funds to run their vast empire from –

a) Taxes collected from the agricultural, trade and commerce.


b) The state has its sole control over mining, sale of liquor and manufacturing of
arms etc.

Ans. – The instructions were engraved on rocks and pillars were -

2. It also included around 800 chariots.
3. In addition to this, it seems that the Mauryans maintained a navy also.

Ans . – 1. The Mauryan controlled their vast empire by dividing the work at different levels.
2. The emperor was the final decision maker and council of ministers was there to help
him.
3. The capital of Mauryans was divided into six committees.
4. These committees looked after sanitation, care of foreigners, regulations of weights and
measures and other works too.
5. The other towns were also managed in a similar manner.

Q. 2– What steps were taken by Ashoka to spread his Dhamma?


Ans. – Steps taken by Ashoka to spread his Dhamma-

1. Based on Dhamma,Ashoka adopted the role of father to his subjects.


2. He instructed his officials to take care of his people.
3. Special officers were appointed called Dhamma Mahamantras to spread
messages of Dhamma.
4. Ashoka also inscribed the principles of Dhamma on rocks and pillars.
5. He also sent messengers to spread Dhamma to other countries like Egypt,
Greece and Sri Lanka.

Ans. – Mauryan’s art and architecture:-

1. Many stupas and viharas were built during Mauryan period.


2. Rock cut caves were made during this period like Nagarjuna hills near Gaya.
3. Another contribution of the Mauryans was the highly polished Ashokan pillars.
4. Pillars were made out of single stone to be shaped and polished like metal.
5. The head of the pillar called the capital was crowned with the figure of bulls and lions.
