Question 1 (CAT)

(a) Explain the following terms:


i. Server.
ii. Active Directory.
iii. Network Mask.
iv. Network Platform.
v. Horizontal Cabling. (10 marks)
(b) (i) Explain the term ISDN.
(ii) Outline the differences between PRI and BRI. (6 marks)
(c) Using a suitable diagram, describe the network device life cycle. (8 marks)
(d) Discuss the classification of network servers. (8 marks)
(e) State the functions of the following network devices:
i. Network Gateway.
ii. Network Firewall.
iii. Windows Registry.
iv. Database Server. (4 marks)
(f) State the differences between the client-server and the browser-server server software
operation modes. (4 marks)

Question 2 (ASSIGNMENT)

(a) Compare and contrast between structured and non-structured network cabling systems
(b) Explain the elements of structured cabling systems
(c) Using clear cable diagrams, explain the difference between straight-through and cross-over
data cable terminations. Explain situations where each type of data cable termination is
used.
(d) Describe any two inherent challenges and any two faults encountered on cabled systems.
(e) A company xyz intends to develop a computer, covering three of her regions. Region 1
serves the headquarters and as two LANs. One LAN has four servers and the other LAN has
49 users. Region 2 has two LANs with 16 and 30 users respectively. Region 3 has only one
LAN with 65 users. The network is dual-homed with regions 1 and 3 connecting to the
internet. Required:
i. List all the devices needed to implement this network
ii. Draw a suitable topology for the network to be developed
iii. Device a suitable IP addressing plan for this network
iv. Develop a static routing plan for this network, considering high availability network
performance.
(f) Discuss the roles of a network:
i. Administrator.
ii. Analyst
(g) Explain how the following tools are used in network management:
i. Tracert
ii. Ping
iii. ARP
