Sude: Good afternoon, everyone. Today, we are going to talk about how beneficial 3D printers.

To give you a small summary, we will be mentioning what areas 3D printers are used in the
health industry. 3D printing has many functions in a variety of industries, however, in the
medical field it has three main applications. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing method
that can build objects directly from a computational model. Unlike traditional manufacturing
methods such as milling and molding, 3D printing can construct models of arbitrary complexity
in relatively fast time frames. It is a powerful tool for visualizing complex human or animal
anatomies and can be used for surgical planning, medical procedure training, medical device
prototyping, and personalized medical device manufacturing.

Now Mehmet will talk about the usage of 3D in bioprinting.

Subpoint1: One of the many types of 3D printing that is used in the medical device field is
bioprinting. Rather than printing using plastic or metal, bioprinters use a computer-guided
pipette to layer living cells, referred to as bio-ink, on top of one another to create artificial living
tissue in a laboratory. These tissue constructs or organoids can be used for medical research as
they mimic organs on a miniature scale. They are also being trialled as cheaper alternatives to
human organ transplants.

My friend Sude will continue to talk about the usage of 3D for prosthetics.

Subpoint2: 3D printing in the medical field can be used to produce prosthetic limbs that are
customised to suit and fit the wearer. It is common for amputees to wait weeks or months to
receive prosthetics through the traditional route; however, 3D printing significantly speeds up
the process, as well as creating much cheaper products that offer patients the same
functionality as traditionally manufactured prosthetics. Although it has been possible to
manufacture components such as dental implants, joints, artificial limbs, and parts of the skull
in the past, they were only available as standard products. However, people differ greatly in
terms of physique and their bodies also change as they age. Here, the customized shapes and
sizes made possible by 3D printing can have an immense influence on people’s quality of life, as
this technology can be used to manufacture made-to-measure prosthetic devices and dental
implants that are precisely created to match the anatomy of each patient, significantly
encouraging the healing process and therefore each patient’s chances of recovery. The lower
price point of these products makes them particularly applicable for use with children, who
quickly outgrow their prosthetic limbs.

Finally, Arya is going to tell us how beneficial 3D printing for surgeons to practice their
operations.

Subpoint3: Lastly, 3D printers are a great use in surgery preparation. In the medical field, 3D
printers can create patient-specific organ replicas that surgeons can use to practice before the
actual operation. This technique has been proven to speed up the procedures and decrease the
errors during the operation. It’s also proven to minimise trauma for patients. This practice is
used in almost any surgery trainings such as transplant surgeries or spinal procedures. 3D
printer practices are beginning to become a routine practice for these kinds of operations.
Furthermore, some of the most complex surgeries would be impossible without letting
surgeons to prepare for all possibilities without using 3D printed models of the area that they
are going to operate on.

To sum up, we have mentioned how 3D printers have changed the medical industry. As Sude
focused on bioprinting industry, 3D has been used instead of plastic or metal products. Mehmet
has pointed out that 3D printing made a lot of amputee patient lives easier and more
affordable. And finally, as I mentioned, thanks to 3D printing technology, surgeons have the
opportunity to practice before the operations and minimise the error rate during the actual
operations.

We believe that 3D printing technology has been an evolution in the science and health
industry. Thank you for your listening.
