Difference Instructions:

1) In the green section, insert in the appropriate cell the amount of money you plan to receive each month from each of the sources listed, adding rows for any sources you may have in addition to these. Be careful to list amounts only for the months during which they are received. EXAMPLE: If you have $2000 in your savings account at the beginning of the school year, list $2000 in the Cash/Savings row for August only. You will not receive $2000 each month, so it should not be listed each month, even if you are not spending from it. 2) In the blue section, insert in the appropriate cell the amount of money you plan to spend each month for each of the projected expenses listed, adding rows for any expenses you may have in addition to these. EXAMPLE: If your rent costs $240 each month, you will insert $240 in each cell on the Rent/Mortgage row for the entire academic year. 3) Do NOT insert anything in the yellow section. This section has formulas which will calculate your financial need based on the resources and expenses you list. You will note that the yellow section shows the resource and expense total for each month. The difference between these two numbers is calculated on the Difference row. That difference will be carried over to the next month, and will be used in the calculation of the difference for that month. EXAMPLE: If your resources for August yield $400, and your expenditures are $500, (difference of -$100) -$100 will be carried over to September. If your September resources yield $400 and your expenditures are $500, the difference for September will be -$200. By watching the Difference row you will know how much money you need, and when you need it. You can also use this worksheet as a spending plan to help you keep unplanned expenditures as low as possible. You will want to save this worksheet and update it as necessary so it will help you accurately predict your financial needs. Having a financial plan, and spending according to that plan will help you keep your educational costs (and debt) at a minimum.
