It is Me: As a Leader

“Every beginner possesses a great potential to be an expert in his or her chosen field.”
This quotation describes how I started my career as a teacher and aspiring educational leader.
My first teaching career was a local school board teacher at Villacin National High School -
Sewahon Extension considered one of the furthest secondary schools in the Division of Cadiz
City. In Sewahon I learned how to be flexible because even though I am a Science Teacher I
need to teach other disciplines like Filipino, MAPEH, English, and other learning areas since the
number of teachers there is very limited. After a year, I was also assigned to Mabini National
High School where I learned to be very diligent on time and organized in managing the
classroom environment. Our principal, there is very strict concerning time and classroom
management.

After serving two years as LSB teacher in the previously mentioned schools I was
assigned as a permanent teacher at CNHS-Andres Bonifacio High School. I can say that this
school served as my training ground and open the doors of opportunities in expanding my
teaching career and the realization of my dream to become an educational leader. This
institution trained me in planning and managing school resources and people; and interacting
with stakeholders since I was assigned as EBEIS coordinator, BAC coordinator, and member of
the School Governing Council. Our school head at that time utilizes individual potential in
achieving our school goals. We were exposed to various trainings and was able to compete in
curricular and extra-curricular competition in various levels.

Through those experiences from the past, I can humbly say that the type of leadership I
am inclined toward is the Skills Leadership Theory and Socio-Cultural Leadership Theory. I
believe that our experiences shape us to become ready for the call for leadership it is also
accompanied by gradually learning the skills needed in performing the job. Leaders should
equip with knowledge and skills to perform better and become models also to their
subordinates. I am also certain that the culture of the school affects the magnitude of its
performance and outputs. As a leader, I am more focused on the balance between good
relationships and professionalism. Motivated teachers can get good outputs, but the question is
how can we motivate our teachers? - of course by also acknowledging their needs and giving
them timely support.

Luckily, after teaching for ten years, I was given the chance to manage the school as
head teacher of CNHS-Tagbanon- Extension in the year 2018 the start of my headship journey
and there I recall practicing these leadership styles. In Tagbanon I was able to craft the 3-year
school plan together with the school governance council by communicating and inculcating with
them the spirit of co-ownership. In the conduct of giving technical assistance to teachers and in
implementing the PPST-RPMS we do it objectively, the manner of observation was based on
the stated guidelines, proper lesson planning and other technicalities were introduced, teachers
were updated with the new trends in teaching like inclusivity, train them also to be
technologically capable by demonstrating the usage of work-related software and other
applications. Teachers and parents were provided open access to different school programs
and initiatives, the transparency board was updated, and feedbacks were welcome and treated
with ease.

Afterwards, the school were able to produce five Teacher III plantilla and teachers
became more productive in the area of instruction as well as in rendering ancillary services. As
a leader it is apparent to make sure that these future leaders feel confident and empowered to
take up the challenges in the field. Being part in different teams in my previous assignments, I
see to it that tasks were evenly distributed or delegated based on the expertise and interest of
the teachers or personnel, opinions and ideas are very much welcome in crafting action plans,
and collaboration and teamwork are strongly encouraged.

My career as a leader is just starting and the challenges and opportunities in the
educational landscape are ever-changing. This means that I need to open myself more to
learning and re-experiment in applying other leadership theories and styles to be more effective
and efficient in the field. I know that there is no perfect leader but I guess there are true and
good leaders who perform out of their heart and are skillful enough because they were designed
by their past experiences.
