Correlation of English subject with other School Subjects
According to the dictionary, the meaning of correlation is mutual relations. Correlation is a

technique that tries to establish the relationship between various subjects of the curriculum.
Importance of Correlation:
1. Correlation between the different subjects gives the knowledge as an integrated one and not
broken up figments. They get a complete single picture.
2. Correlation makes the subject matter more interesting.
3. Knowledge gained through correlation lasts for a longer time.
4. English becomes truly workable in life.
5. Students learn the application of knowledge in relation to other subjects and to the life situation.
6. Unity of knowledge is preserved.
Types of Correlation:
There are three types of correlation
i. Correlation of the subject with daily life
ii. Correlation of the subject with other subjects.
iii. Correlation within the subject.
Correlation of the subject with daily life

As English is a lingua franca of the world and a language through which we can exchange our views
with the people of other countries. It has relevance to daily life. Learning English facilitated the
establishment of international contacts between different nations of the world. Its study gives an
opportunity to Indians to get employment not only in India but also in other countries. It gives the
opportunities to study English literature which is so vast and so rich. It opens the gates of western
science and technology. it also serves as a common language of Indians. It is a language of trade and
industry in India. Hence the teacher which teaches in English should correlate the English content with
daily life situations.
Correlation of English with another subject:

A) English and Marathi:
B) English and Hindi:
C) English and Science:
D) English and History:
E) English and Civics:
F) English and Geography
A) English and Marathi:
We have already seen the Grammar Translation Method. In this method, each sentence in the book is
translated by the teacher into the mother tongue of the child. The teacher thus correlates English with
Marathi in this method. English teachers can correlate English with Marathi by taking various examples
in Marathi. He can teach essays, compositions, and letters by correlating the content. The teacher can
also use known Marathi stories by translating them into English. There are so many prose lessons that
are taken from Marathi literature by translating the same, the teacher can show the relevance of the
two stories. The teacher may explain the English phrases and idioms by using te Windows appropriate
phrases and idioms in the mother tongue.
B) English and Hindi:

The English teacher can correlate English subjects with Hindi subjects. The relation will be the same
as of English and Marathi.
C) English and Science:

Without a good knowledge of English, one cannot learn science. It is through English only that the
knowledge of science is spread throughout the world. So the English teacher tries to correlate both
subjects. The teacher should try to acquaint his students with the knowledge of scientific data. He may
suggest essays on scientific topics like science the destroyer or creator. Interplanetary flight, the
conquest of nature, science, and civilization, etc. The teacher should give passages from historical and
original scientific works for translation, precise writing, and paraphrasing for appreciation. The teacher
should give suitable examples from science while teaching prose content related to science.
D) English and History:

History is a description of past events. English teachers can use paragraphs having descriptions of
past events. The teacher should correlate English and history while teaching such content. An English
teacher may ask students to write essays on historical personalities such as Shivaji Maharaj,
Lokmanya Tilak, MK Gandhi...his thoughts.…..second world war and its effects.
E) English and Civics:

An English teacher can correlate civics with English by teaching selected paragraphs that have
relevance with civics.
F) English and Geography

Geographical knowledge is always in the English language, astronomy, planetary, solar eclipses,
etc...are concepts in English only.
