CEGE0009: STRUCTURAL DESIGN

PROBLEM PAPER 2: R.C. BEAMS AND SLABS

Q1. Table 1 shows the minimum covers to reinforcement for structures made of CEM
I concrete exposed to a range of environments, assuming a design life of 50 years. It has
been compiled with the aid of Table A4 in BS8500-1.
(i) Check the values of cover shown for Exposure classes XS1-XS3
(ii) Compile a similar table for structures with 100 years design life.

Q2. A simply supported rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a span of 7 m.

It has a breadth of 260 mm and overall depth of 500 mm. The characteristic
permanent and variable actions are 5 kN/m and 7 kN/m respectively. Calculate the
areas of:

(a) tension reinforcement

(b) shear reinforcement and
(c) compression reinforcement required.

Assume fck = 30 N/mm2, fy = 500 N/mm2, nominal cover to links is 40 mm and the
density of reinforced concrete is 25 kN/m3. List any assumptions.

Q3. (i) A simply supported rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a span of 6 m and a
cross-section as shown in Fig Q3. Determine the maximum variable action that the
beam can carry assuming the action is:
(a) uniformly distributed
(b) occurs as two point loads, 2 m and 4 m from the left hand support.
Assume fck = 30 N/mm2, fy = 500 N/mm2, the main steel is inset 40 mm and that the
density of reinforced concrete is 25 kN/m3. List any assumptions that you make.

(ii) If the beam was reinforced with 4H25s instead, determine the maximum variable
uniformly distributed action that the beam can support.

Q4. A simply supported rectangular reinforced concrete beam spans 8 m. It has

a breadth of 300 mm and an effective depth of 550 mm. Assume the longitudinal
reinforcement is inset 45 mm. The inclusive characteristic actions are 25 kN/m
permanent and 15.5 kN/m variable. The concrete and steel reinforcement strengths
are C30/37 and 500 N/mm2 respectively.

Design the longitudinal and shear reinforcement for the beam and check the
deflection in accordance with
(i) Eurocode 2
(ii) BS8110

Q5. A rectangular simply supported beam is required to carry a uniformly distributed

variable action of 55 kN/m on a single span of 8.5 m. For architectural reasons it is
necessary that the overall depth of the beam should not exceed 625 mm.

Assuming that b = 400 mm, fck = 30 N/mm2, fy = 500 N/mm2 and nominal cover to
the steel reinforcement is 30 mm, design the beam.

2
Q6. Construct a design chart for a singly reinforced rectangular beam of width b and
effective depth d made of concrete strength class C30/37 and high yield
reinforcement.

Q7. The one-way spanning concrete floor shown below is required to support
the following actions:

finishes + partition and ceiling load = 3 kN/m2

variable action = 3.5 kN/m2

Assuming that fck = 30 N/mm2, fy = 500 N/mm2 and nominal cover to the steel
reinforcement, c, is 25 mm, design the slab and the supporting cantilever beams
on gridlines A and B. All beams are 400 mm wide, bb, and 750 mm deep, hb. The
overall depth of the slab, hs, is 175 mm.
