Critique About Narda

The song "Narda" by the Filipino band Kamikazee is about a man who falls in love with the Filipino superhero Darna. The song tells the story of the man observing Darna from afar and longing for her to notice him, though he believes she is out of his league. For the author, the song exemplifies feminism by highlighting the resilience of women through the character of Darna, who has come to represent strength and tenacity for Filipino women in society. Darna's outfit and attributes have taken on meanings of justice, power and righteousness for Filipinos beyond just being a fictional character.

Critique about “Narda” by Kamikazee

In the Philippines, Kamikazee is a well-known band, and they first performed Narda.
Fans and critics have described the band's music as a mix of pop punk and hardcore punk. They
issued "Maharot," their second album, in 2006. "Narda," which is about the fictional Filipina
super hero Darna, served as the album's lead single.
The band's hallmark song, "Narda," became a smash in 2006 and had consistent radio
playing that same year. The 2005 GMA Network primetime program Darna, which starred Angel
Locsin, served as the song's inspiration. It was utilized for the GMA Network's primetime
program Darna, which starred Marian Rivera in the lead character, later in 2009.
The person who swallows a mystical stone to transform into the super hero Darna is
known as "Narda." The song tells the story of a person who fell in love with Darna and wished to
meet or even simply see her. The character referred to as "Ding" in the song is Narda's younger
brother, who is aware that she is Darna.
The song's lyrics are rather simple: a man yearns for his true love, who may or may not
be Darna, the real-life superheroine. He observes and admires her from a distance: "Tila ibon
kong lumipad, Sumabay sa hangin, Akoy napatingin, Sa dalagang nababalot ng hiwaga..." But he
also wishes that she would notice him, a person he himself believes is unworthy of her time, in
the midst of her undoubtedly hectic life: "Mapapansin kaya, Sa dami ng 'yong ginagawa, Kung
kaagaw ko ang lahat, May pag asa bang makilala ka…”. Though he knows she is much out of his
league, he still pines and hopes: "Awit na nananawagan, Baka sakaling napakikinggan, Pag ibig
na palaisipan, Sa kanta na lang idaraan..." He believes that a simple glance or a smile from her
would be enough to sate his longing heart: "Nag-aabang sa langit...Sa mga ulap sumisilip…Sa
likod ng mga tala…Kahit sulyap lang, Darna…”

Even so, it doesn't work for him. If he were actually in danger, would she recognize him at that
point and perhaps even give him the opportunity to hug and embrace her? “Tumalon kaya ako sa
bangin, Para lang iyong sagipin… Ito ang tanging paraan, Para mayakap ka…”
For me, Kamikazee's song "Narda" exemplifies feminism since it highlights the resilience
of women in general as a character of Darna. We have given Darna significance that goes
beyond her fictitious persona as Filipinos. Her outfit, including the red bikini with the two gold
stars, the gold cuff bracelets, the headpiece with the winged medallion, the red boots, the golden
belt with the loincloth in the middle, and the "bato," now conjures up ideas of justice, power, and
righteousness. These were seen by the Darna characters as a sign of optimism that, if Darna can
protect society from evils, then kindness will ultimately triumph—even in real life. Outside of
fiction, Darna's persona also came to represent for Filipinos the tenacity and strength of strong
Filipino women in society.
Symbolic interactionism teaches us that Darna is more than just a character, in general.
She holds meaning that we have socially constructed, as do our daily actions. Whether we are
aware of it or not, these direct our daily behaviors.
