INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
In the year 1977, two young visionaries- Mr. S. Thiagarajan & Mr. M. Ramesh-
understood the potential of Sesame and decided to venture into the business of producing and
distributing sesame oil across the globe. Financial aid being a problem, they set up their business
in a small 32 sq.ft. rented space in a rice mill compound. They named their brand 'Sastha' in
praise of Lord Ayyappa and invested their childhood savings to start production. In the year
1980, getting a bank loan for Rs. 5000 was a huge challenge, but they ensured that they left no
stone unturned in growing their business. Hard work and dedication fetched amazing results over
the years; what began as a small partnership firm soon developed into a large scale business.
Today, Thiagarajan Agro Products (P) Ltd. is a registered Private Company and has expanded its
production unit from a 32 sq. ft. rented space to a mammoth 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art plant
on a 10-acre land in Madurai.

Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years
ago. Sesamum has many other species, most being wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa. S.
indicum, the cultivated type, originated in India and is tolerant to drought-like conditions,
growing where other crops fail. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a
rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world. Like other seeds and
foods, it can trigger allergic reactions in some people.

INDUSTRY
PROFILE

9
INDUSTRY PROFILE

The edible oil industry worldwide is in good health as the rising population, disposable
income and increasing demand has made sure that edible and cooking oil industry continue to
perform efficiently and operate for a long time in the future. The global edible oil industry
produces, imports and exports throughout the year and the major consumer countries rely heavily
on their domestic production and imports. India is one of the largest producers and exporters of
the edible oil across the continent and the world. The climatic conditions in India favor growing
a variety of seeds from which oil can be extracted, they are called oil seeds. The growing
population and the varied dietary habits of different and diverse demographics have ensured a
thriving market for edible oil industry in the country and in Asia.

Statistically, oilseeds in India account for over 5% of the Gross National Product (GNP)
and 14% of the country's area accounts for cultivation of crops. Some of the major oilseeds
grown are Castor, Groundnut, Linseed, Niger, Rapeseed, Mustard, Safflower, Sesame and
Sunflower. India produces 10 percent of the world's oilseeds and the cooking oil production
industry. The edible oil market in India is projected to grow from around $21.5 billion in 2019
to $35.2 billion by 2025 due to increasing disposable income and rising consumer awareness
about healthy lifestyle & wellness.

Moreover, strong marketing activities by leading edible oil brands, changing tastes and
preferences of consumers, expanding population, and shifting consumption pattern towards
branded oils is leading to rising consumption of edible oils in the country.

Surging penetration of processed foods is expected to continue driving consumption of

edible oils in the country. In 2019, Soya oil accounted for more than one-third of the market
share in India edible oil market. The other leading oil types include Mustard oil, Palm oil and
Sunflower oil. Olive oil segment continues to gain market traction in India, however, the
product's share stood at just around 1% in 2019.

West India dominated the country's edible oil market in 2019, and the region is expected to
maintain its dominance during the forecast period. East and West regions also account for a
significant market share, with the South region grabbing the smallest market pie.
10
Some of the major players operating in India edible oil market include Adani Wilmar
Limited (Fortune), Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt Ltd (Dhara), Cargill India (Nature Fresh,
Gemini), Patanjali Ayurved Limited (Patanjali), EmamiAgrotech Ltd. (Emami Healthy & Tasty
and Himani Best Choice) and others.

IMPORTANCE OF EDIBLE OILS IN THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY:

Oilseeds and edible oils are two of the most sensitive essential commodities. India is one
of the largest producer of oilseeds in the world and this sector occupies an important position in
the agricultural economy, accounting for the estimated production of36.56 million tons of nine
cultivated oilseeds during the year 2020-21(November-October) as per 3 rd Advance Estimates
released by the Ministry of Agriculture on 25.05.2021.

MAJOR FEATURES OF EDIBLE OIL ECONOMY:

There are two major features, which have significantly contributed to the development of
this sector. One was the setting up of the Technology Mission on Oilseeds in 1986 which has
been converted into a National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP) in 2014.As per a
decision regarding merger/ conversions or linkage of Schemes/ sub-Schemes/ programmes, etc.
having similar components such as incentive for seed, demonstration, and farm implements
including efficient water application tools covered under NFSM and Oil seeds was merged under
revamped NFSM from the year 2018-19.
This gave a thrust to Government's efforts for augmenting the production of oilseeds. This
is evident by the very impressive increase in the production of oilseeds from about 11.3 million
tons in 1986-87 to 33.22 million tons in 2019-20. Most of the oilseeds are cultivated on marginal
land and are dependent on rainfall and other climatic conditions. The other dominant feature
which has had significant impact on the present status of edible oilseeds/oil industry has been the
program of liberalization under which the Government's economic policy allowing greater
freedom to the open market and encourages healthy competition and self regulation rather than
protection and control. Controls and regulations have been relaxed resulting in a highly
competitive market dominated by both domestic and multinational players.

11
In order to ensure availability of edible oil in the country, export of edible oil has been
banned w.e.f. 17.03.2008, which was extended from time to time. With effect from 06.02.2015,
export of ricebran oil in bulk has been permitted. With effect from 27.03.2017, export of
groundnut oil, sesame oil, soyabean oil and maize (corn) oil has been permitted. With effect from
06.04.2018, export of all edible oils except mustard oil was made free without quantitative
ceiling; pack size etc, till further orders. Export of mustard oil is permitted in packs of up to 5 Kg
with a Minimum Export Price (MEP) of USD 900 per MT.
