Now Generations have been evolving. Man first lived in trees, then in caves, then in farmlands, later
in huts, and now today in cemented suffocating blocks with complememntry toxins to enjoy poison
with. Indeed, modernization of technology has made Man lazier as he keeps on looking for artificial
alternatives to natural sources such as sunlight so that he can satisfy himself by preserving his
laziness.
In the following, Text 1 (Webpage) and text 2 (Video) will be compared and contrasted on the basis
of mMood and oObjective. The objective of both the texts are to encourage the audience to move
out and enjoy the nature. The first text attempts to pull the audience outside his house, as it
describes the beauty of the nature and give a refreshing "Through The Breezes fetch along" This
gives a soothing feeling to the audience as he may think of being a grass and trying to feel the cool
wind blow through him.
This makes the audence more comfortable and lure them by the natural sense gratification. On the
other hand the second text also by describing the ugliness of his house as it evident from 1:55 to
1;57 where it talks about the pollution inside the house is five times more than outside. This makes
the audience get a feeling of suffocation and breathing toxic air and will urge him to move outside
and try to breathe and enjoy the five times less polluted air outside.
Ultimately both texts are encouraging movement of man outside the house But the mood the texts
build in the audience are opposites of eachother. The first text describes the beauty and the
freshness as in the poem, "The Grass so little has to do, With only Butterflies to brood" This makes
the viewer visualize the environment scene and give a heavenly view as butterflies associate with
beauty and joy which will lure the reader to go outside and enjoy the feeling and already start to
develop that positive mood. Wheereas the second text uses Direct visualization at 2;21. It shows so
much filth by showing molds and a dark background which gives a feeling of disguts to the audinece
and a negative aura. This makes the audience to build a negative mood as he will associate this
stereotypical scene at his house. This will make the viewer sooner or later try to escape outside from
his house.
In Synopsis, the Approach of both the texts are different to convince man to go outside and explore
the beutiful bona fide nature rather than suffering inside an artifcial block. The first text gives a
vibrant mood to the audience due to its strong personification of nature which attracts the audience
as a pull fatcor and gives hope. Whereas the latter is a push factor as it discourages the audience to
stay at home all the time due to the deep intoxication inside the home and develops a mood of
hopelessness and disgust
Sample 2
Text 1 is a webpage published by The Outbound Collective that encourages people to engage with
the outdoors through experience and poetry, while Text 2 is short film presented by the Velux Group
to illustrate the effects of modern lifestyles on our health and well-being. The 2 texts will be
compared and contrasted on their purpose and their tone.
Text 1 and 2 have a common purpose to encourage the audience to connect with the outside world,
or in other words, nature. Text 1 talks about how our abstract feelings evoked by nature/the
outdoor world are beyond the reach of the "human language", yet all of us try to express them in
forms of poetry and experience. By talking about this, the author is able to persuade the audience
that nature is a limitless matter/subject of inspiration for all creative people out there, and we must
connect with the outside world through experience and poetry in order to articulate our feelings
well.
On the other hand, text 2 also tries to persuade the audience to move more outdoors, as it tries to
explain the consequences of our modern lifestyles, which it termed as a part of the "indoor
generation", implying that we have forgotten about nature and have no connection with outdoors.
By this, the film is urging the audience to take action and be more connected with the outside world,
in order to improve the situation for the upcoming generations. Though the 2 texts serve the same
purpose, their is a major difference in their tone of writing. While text 1 is a lot more brighter, text 2
is filled with a serious, and sad tone for the majority of the film, except the final 30 seconds, where it
becomes more optimistic to urge the audience to take action.
In the first paragraph of Text 1, audience connect can be seen when the author writes "If you’ve
ever watched the sunrise in the mountains" and more such descriptive scenes, to tell the audience
that these attempts by man to express them is and will forever be eluded by the actual experiences.
This is a bright tone, as there is no sense of sad or melancholy or serious tone, but rather interactive
and bright. However, from 0:00 to 2:36, Text 2 has maintained a very serious and sad tone, which is
enhanced a lot by diegetic sounds in the form of the narrator's words of fear and seriousness, and
non-diegetic sounds like the background music, which evokes the feeling of worry. Hence, the two
texts have been compared and contrasted on the basis of tone and purpose, where while they may
serve the same purpose, they achieve it by maintaining contrasting tones.
Sample 3
Text 1 is a webpage from outbound collective, which encourages people to engage with the
outdoors. Text 2, is a short film by Velux Group showing the ill effects of not connecting outdoors. In
this essay the texts would be compared and contrasted on the basis of the perspective and their
purpose.
The point of similarity in the 2 texts is their purpose. The purpose of both texts is to encourage
people to spend more time outdoors while informing them about the impacts of not doing so. This
purpose can be seen in text 1 when the author shows the beauty of the nature. Using visual imagery,
using descriptive sentences such as "put to sleep by the soundless waltz of five....fundamental
beauty" which shows how beautiful nature is, also implying and encouraging the audinece to be with
the nature. Even phrases such as "And thread the Dews, all night, like Pearls – And make itself so
fine"" use metaphors to describe the beauty of nature again sending a message to the audience on
the beauty of the nature. Sending this message will encourage them to connect with nature, hence
the above mentioned purpose is valid.
Text 2's purpose is also to show the importance of outdoors and nature, persuading the audience to
spend more time there. Firstly, the audience used a glass house prop, to show how staying indoors
can create a toxic environment. From 1:55 to 2:20, the toxicants and effects of staying indoors all the
time was shown to the audience using disturbing visuals such as those of bacteria and illnesses. This
would have created a cloud of concer in the audience, making them realize that staying indoors all
the time is wrong. Even the melancholic and spooky music supporting these visuals was conveying
the message that dedicating our entire time indoors is unhealthy and we should spend more time
outside, which fulfilled the purpose.
Eventhough there was a visible similarity in the purpose of the texts, the approach or perspective
used to show the purpose differed. Text 1 used a positive perspective to show the importance of
being outdoors. In text 1, referring to nature, when the author said "Some things can speak to us
without saying a word and evoke feelings that lie beyond the reach of human language" it showed
their positive approach showing the beauty of nature. Using personification here, the author could
show how the nature can evoke feelings like none other within humans, showing the beauty of
nature while also conveying the beauty of the nature to the audience.
Contrastingly in text-2 the author uses a negative perspective to show why it is important to
connect with the outdoors. This is visible throughout the video, especially from 0:58 - 1:05, where
the author uses close angle shots to show the breaking walls, ill and trapped people, while using
narration and dark lighting to show how staying indoors can affect us. Explaining the consequences
of staying indoors, can prompt the audience to connect more with the authors, which was the
perspective the author was trying to use.
Overall both the texts had a common purpose of helping the audience connect with the nature,
however the perspectives and approached used by both differed. Text 1 used a positive approach -
highlighting the beauty of the nature whereas text 2 used a negative approach highlighting the
consequences of drifting away from nature and staying indoors
