What is fiction?
The word 'Fiction' is derived from a Latin word “fictio”, which means "the act of making,
fashioning, or molding". Fiction is the kind of literature that is created from imagination and not presented
as a fact, even if it is based upon a true story. For any fictional piece of literature, the Plot, Characters,
Setting, Dialogues, Storyline etc. all depend upon the imagination of the author. While reading a fiction, one
can feel imaginative, inspired, absorbing new ideas or even get scared sometimes.
Summary:
A group of young boys varying in ages are stranded alone after a plane crash on an island in the Pacific
Ocean. In other parts of the world, a worldwide war is taking place. The boys try to develop and follow a
specific set of rules and start coordinating together for their survival. But they are mentally amateur,
resulting in them creating tensions between each other on the race to take control over the others. This
results in them being brutal, and a complete chaos is seen. The author symbolizes the savagery and civics in
human nature through his story.
Setting:
The story is based on a tropical island, in the Pacific Ocean. The characters show glimpses of a plane crash
on the island, and they are the survivors. They also mention an on-going event of world war (fictional) from
which they were escaping, hence the story is based around 1950s.
The forest on the island is shown to be thick and green. It consists of wild pigs and possibly other wild
animals such as snakes. A cave is also mentioned in the story and the landscape of the island consists of a
beach and a huge mountain as well. The mountain is also an important part of the story.
Characters:
1. Ralph
Ralph is the main character who is the protagonist. He is 12 years old, has a fair colored hair and has
characteristics of being a leader. He attempts to set up rules for all to follow and develop coordination
between everyone. Ralph symbolizes civic instinct in a society. He stays shows a glimpse of a dynamic
character near the end of the story.
2. Jack
Jack is the antagonist of the story and a main character. Jack is older than most of the other boys. He
wants to take power and control in his hands and builds tension with Ralph in an attempt of leading his
own way and gathering followers. He is wild, revengeful and barbaric in nature. Jack represents
savagery in a society. He is a static character throughout the story.
3. Piggy
Piggy is the third main character in the story. He is a fat boy who wears glasses. He is a wise boy and
offers intellectual solutions throughout the story. His ideas are often neglected, but to a reader these
ideas would seem sensible. Piggy represents logic and rationality in a society. He is a static character.
4. Simon
Simon is a supporting character. He is shy, sensitive and good in nature. He works with others,
motivates them and is kind to them. He is also deep rooted in his connectedness with nature. He is also
the first to realize that the beast is the inner voice and bloodlust of the boys which will make things
worse. Simon symbolizes morality and goodness in society. His character is static.
5. Roger
Roger is a supporting character. He is among the first of the followers of jack's tribe. He is sadistic in
nature and cruel to the little boys. He is also the one who rolls a boulder on piggy, eventually murdering
him. Roger represents cruelty and evil forces in society. His character is static.
6. Sam and Eric
Both Sam and Eric are supporting characters. They are twins and referred as "Samneric" by the other
boys. Both were allies of Ralph in the initial parts of the story, but during the ending when jack's tribe is
powerful, Sam and Eric join Jack after getting persuaded. Sam and Eric symbolize herd mentality of a
society. Their characters are dynamic.
Plot:
The main theme of the story is to show the two prominent forces in human society: Civilization and
Savagery. Throughout the story, the values of these forces build tension with each other, and the effects are
then trickled down on every individual. Most prominent values are the instant and short-term plannings of a
savage intuition, and the long-term and thoughtful plannings of a civilized intuition.
Conflict:
The conflict in the story is mostly external, between the characters. Ralph and Jack are constantly in a
situation of building tension between each other and their followers. Both of their fundamental objectives
are different (e.g.: providing sustenance or building infrastructure), but at the same time both want the same
thing: survival and power. Moreover, this also symbolizes the human society and the different objectives of
humans, built upon civics and savagery.
Rising action:
The action in the story starts to rise when Jack announces that he is going on his own and forms his own
tribe, which is joined by Roger. Then the tribes of Jack and Ralph become separate from each other. Jack
and his tribe hunt a pig, and puts the head of the pig on a spear in the forest (later encountered by Simon).
Now the savagery in the tribes starts to roll in even more, and soon the murder of Simon takes place.
Climax:
The climax was when Simon sees the pig head on a spear (called as Lord of the Flies) in the forest and
figures out that the beast is the inner bloodlust and savagery of each boy on the island, which will lead them
to destruction. After this moment, everything starts to go evil and savagery exceeds civilization, starting
with the brutal murder of Simon.
Resolution:
The falling action is when everyone is led by their evil intentions and wanted to kill Ralph, and in the
process of finding Ralph, they set fire to the whole jungle. The smoke from the fire becomes a beacon for
their rescue when a Naval Officer appears on the beach by seeing the smoke. In the end, every boy is crying
for their actions.
