Indeterminacy and Stability of Structures

1) Indeterminate structures have more supports or members than determinate structures, making them generally stiffer and less likely to collapse if a support or member fails. 2) A structure is externally indeterminate if its support reactions cannot be determined from static equilibrium equations alone. It is internally indeterminate if additional equations are needed based on member forces. 3) Rigid frames can resist moments at joints while trusses can only resist axial forces, with internal hinges allowing for determinacy.
