San Carlos City traces its history from being a small Negrito settlement named Nabingkalan. This settlement was later bought by Carlos Apurado who developed it into a thriving Christian village. The place was renamed San Carlos in 1856 when it was made a “pueblo” by the Spanish government. The municipality's status was elevated into a city on July 1, 1960, per Republic Act No. 2643, approved on June 18, 1960, and Presidential Proclamation No. 685 s. 1960.

San Carlos City’s most visited landmarks. Overlooking Sipaway Island, has a fresh water swimming pool, children’s playground, gazebo, kiosks, promenade, picnic area and pavilion.

Sipaway, or Refugio Island, as its geographic
name goes, is an island which is located 15 minutes (more or less) away from the center of San Carlos City in Negros Occidental. You'll probably be thrilled to discover that some breathtaking, white sand beaches mark its amazing coastline. Moreover, this gem of an island is quite small – it’s only about 7 kilometers in length. So this actually means good news – you can explore the entire island in one day or less!
