A recent study by Iowa State University psychologists has found that not
only watching TV, but also playing video games, contributes to attention
disorders. These results are disturbing. The study showed that both young
children and college-age youth who played video games for more than
two hours a day were almost twice as likely to have attention problems.
In fact, the average child in the U.S. spends about four-and-a-half hours a
day either watching TV or playing video games.
Douglas Gentile, one of the researchers, says that both TV and video
games are very fast paced. He points out that video clips, such as the ones
we see on popular music channels, last for only a few minutes and change
scenes often. These short, constantly-changing clips mean that kids get
used to seeing something new all the time. This quicker viewing pace can
be harmful. More and more children have difficulty developing a long
attention span and find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time. At
school, children who are used to watching a lot of television or who play
video games all the time may find it hard to concentrate for the length of
a lesson.
Some researchers suggest that children with short attention spans tend to
be more attracted to video games and TV in the first place. Edward
Swing, a researcher in the Iowa study, says, " It wouldn't surprise me if
children who have attention problems are attracted to these media, and
that these media increase their attention problems."
