LESSON 1. Function and Relation

A function is a correspondence between two sets where each element in the domain corresponds to exactly one element in the range. It can be represented in different ways like a mapping diagram, table of values, or graph. An important rule is that a function must be one-to-one or many-to-one but cannot be one-to-many or many-to-many. An example of a function is the relationship between a person's name and their phone number, while examples of non-functions include a student having multiple classes or vice versa.

FUNCTION
It is a correspondence between two sets
where each element in the domain corresponds RELATION
to exactly one element in range. Any set of
ordered pairs.

ELEMENTS : Members of these sets.

UNDERSTANDING FUNCTION

Important rule:
1. 𝑓(𝑥) does not mean 𝑓 times 𝑥.
2. The most common function names
are 𝑓 and 𝐹 since the word
function begins with an “𝑓”. Other
common name are 𝑔 and 𝐺, but
any letter can be used.
3. Although we can think
( range ) 𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓 𝑥 as interchangeable, the
function notation is useful when
we want to consider two or more
functions of the same independent
variable.

IMPORTANT NOTE
All functions are relations but not all
relations are functions.
