How Typhoon Develop

The Philippines is prone to typhoons for several reasons: 1. It is located within the western Pacific typhoon belt and experiences 2 typhoon seasons per year from May to October. 2. Its mountainous terrain and forest cover influence regional weather patterns and trap moisture, making some areas wet year-round. 3. The Philippine Area of Responsibility encompasses the region where the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration monitors tropical cyclones. Typhoons that form in this region are pushed northwest by winds.

Why is the

Philippines is
z
prone to
typhoon?
PHILIPPINE TYPHOON
The Philippines is
considered
z as one of the
typhoon prone areas in
the world.
z TWO PRONOUNCED
TYPE I
SEASONS:
Dry from November to April
Wet during the rest of the year.

TYPE II NO DRY SEASON

with a very pronounced rainfall from
November to April and
Wet during the rest of the year.

TYPE III SEASONS ARE NOT VERY

PRONOUNCED:
Relatively dry from November to April
Wet during rest of the year.

TYPE IV RAINFALL IS MORE OR LESS

EVENLY DISTRIBUTED
THROUGH THE YEAR
Landforms
z and bodies of water affect weather
and climate of the Philippines:
▪ The Philippine climate is tropical marine.

▪ Northeast monsoon from November to April and southwest

monsoon from May to October.

❖ Factors on why weather and climate in the Philippines differ in

four regions of the country:

✓Presence of mountains

✓Forests

✓Bodies of water
z
4 Regions bounded inland by
mountain ranges:

▪ Mindoro
▪ Negros
▪ Palawan
▪ Western part of Luzon
Regions that trapped in the middle of
z

mountain ranges:

Western Cagayan, Western Isabela, Nueva Viscaya,

Eastern Mountain Province, Southern Luzon,
Bondoc Peninsula, Masbate and Mindanao.

✓They are situated on the west of the

mountain ranges in the Eastern part of the
country.
Areas
z that are located in the inner
middle part of the archipelago, but are
open to inland bodies of water(big open
seas).
Batanes, Northeastern Luzon, the Western part of
Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur, Western
Albay, Eastern Mindoro, Marinduque, Western
Leyte, Northern Cebu, Northern Negros, and most
of the Southern Central, and Northern Mindanao.
z
These ARE the reasons why there is no dry
season in these places and why there is no
heavy rainfall:
✓The trees in the forest give off a lot of water
vapor in the atmosphere when they transpire.
✓Adding a lot of moisture in the atmosphere.

✓The forest block off the moisture laden air

masses that have passed over the big open seas.
The philippine area of responsibility
z

(PAR)
▪ PAR – is refers to designated area in the
northwestern Pacific where PAGASA is
tasked to monitor and issue warnings
pertaining to tropical cyclone
occurrences and activities.

▪ TYPHOON MOVEMENTS:

- Typhoons are pushed by high altitude winds and

move north because of the effect of the earth’s
rotation (Coriolis effect).
- Typhoons in northern hemisphere rotate
counterclockwise and clockwise in the southern
hemisphere.

WHAT TO DO
DURING
z

TYPHOON?
z
PSWS 1
1. Listen to your radio for more information about
weather disturbance.
2. Check the ability of the house to withstand
strong winds and strengthen it if necessary.
3. The people are advised to monitor the latest
severe weather Bulletin issued by PAGASA every
six hours. In the meantime, business may be
carried out as usual except when flood occurs.
z

DAMAGING
EFFECTS OF
z

TYPHOONS
z STRONG WINDS
(SQUALLS)
❑The surface wind increases in magnitude and is
maintained over a time interval of several
minutes to half an hour. The increase in wind
speed may occur abruptly or slowly. These
changes in near landfall can lead to loss of lives
and large damage to properties
z
z
THUNDERSTORMS
❑are local storms associated with thunder and
lightning. happen during mid and late afternoon
❑They are very common during warm and very
humid weather.
❑It covers only small area and are short-lived.

❑They are common in the tropics.

z
z
Tornadoes
❑ are brief but extremely violent whirling
storms that can occur in any part of the
world.
❑ it is likely to occur during hot, humid
days when cumulonimbus clouds cover
the entire sky.
z
z

Floods
can cause the rising of the river this
happen because forces from the
center of the typhoon can cause the
lifting of the sea level.
z
RAINFALL
associated with tropical cyclone is both
beneficial and harmful. Rains contribute
to the water needs of the areas
traversed by the tropical cyclone. The
rains are harmful when the amount is
way too large as to cause flooding.
z
z
Storm surge
▪ it is a phenomenon where the strong winds
blow from offshore to the coast, seawater is
blown towards the coast.
▪ This is an abnormal rise of water due to
tropical cyclone and it is an oceanic event.
These devastating surges occur along
coasts with low-lying terrain.
