DLL 1 - Difficult and Challenging Behavior

III - PROCEDURE
Review  - What is an ICC?
 - Who are the members of ICC?
 - What is the purpose of an ICC?

Motivation Direction : Without making any sound, act out the following scenarios.

Discussion :
Abstraction
Challenging Behavior - is any behaviour that someone displays that is a challenge for
others to manage and/or puts the young person or others at risk
Factors Affecting Challenging Behavior
1. Physical Factors – include those individual condition that predisposes to distress.
These could be unpleasant symptoms, pain and discomfort that causes irritability
and agitation.
2. Cognitive Factors – include the inability to remember new information,
understand instructions, poor judging and planning, and communication
problems.
3. Emotional Factors – include a person’s emotional status and those with
personality disorders.
4. Social Factors – these can be provocative in a person, such as temperature and
noise.

Application Identify the factors that trigger the challenging behavior of the patients in each scenarios.
1. You were hired to take good care of Mr. Fabian who is 78 years old. He is
experiencing memory loss at times. This makes him uneasy and eventually
becoming aggressive towards his family.
2. Dr. Harry is a very good physician. He earns a lot and provides for his family’s
needs. But as he aged, he suffers from stroke that led to disability and speech
impairment. When he got sick, he suddenly became mad and angry.
3. Alvin was a smoker, he quit at the advice of his doctor. As he went through the
process of stopping to smoke, he feels restless and is having difficulty sleeping.

IV – EVALUATING LEARNING
Identify what factors of challenging behavior do these problems belong to :
1. separation anxiety 6. suicidal tendencies
2. overcrowding 7. noisy surroundings
3. pain 8. depression
4. hunger 9. infection
5. memory loss 10. reduced comprehension

V - ASSIGNMENT
Based on the discussion, evaluate yourself by listing down the traits you already have. On the other
column, list down the traits that you lack and how you will improve yourself to possess and develop
them. Accomplish this one in your activity notebook.
