Socialization
Socialization is a procedure by means of which culture is transmitted to more youthful age, also
men become familiar by the guidelines as well practices of social gatherings to which they have
a place. So by this procedure, a youngster figures out how to carry on throughout everyday life
and take an interest in a gathering in public area.

Agency and Agents of Socialization

Agency alludes toward someone or something through which control is applied or an end is
accomplished. Agents of socialization are the people, gatherings, or establishments that
encourage us what we have to know so as to take an interest in public eye.

We remain presented to numerous specialists of socialization all through our lifetime; thus, we
have an impact on those mingling agents and associations. Individuals who go about as
socialization’s specialists incorporate relatives, companions, instructors, businesses, religious
pioneers and mass media. They all add to an individual’s convictions, sense of life, qualities and
view.

Media Function as Socializing Agent

The media work as mingling operators in a few different ways:

1. They illuminate us about occasions

2. They acquaint us with a wide assortment of individuals
3. They give a variety of perspectives on current issues
4. They make us mindful of items and administrations that, in the event that we buy them,
will as far as anyone knows help us to be acknowledged by others
5. They engage us by giving the chance to live vicariously (through other individuals’
encounters).

The direct effects theory is based on several assumptions:

That media messages overpower other influences

That people are passive consumers of media and have predictable responses
That people are naturally irrational and instinctive

That media has immediate and universal effects on people and contributes to society's ills.

Media socialization and the generations

Social media affects behavior negatively by depriving kids of important social cues they
would usually learn through in-person communication. This can cause them to be more
callous, anxious, and insecure. Social media affects social skills by replacing some of kids' direct
contact with their peers.
Social Media is a strong medium of social development. It also needs some etiquette during
using it. It is a facilitator for promoting cultural development of learner. Holistic development of
learner depends on possible directions of social, cultural situation of our society.

How media can impact in the process of socialization?

Sadly Media can serve as a negative function in young people life. Young people want to be
accepted by society and the media creates the ideal image that tells you what the characteristics
are to be accepted and to be able to fit in with society.

Identity formation through media

On social media, we express our identities through text, visual material, likes, shares, and links to
other sites. We use these platforms to tell small stories of ourselves, sometimes with specific
audiences in mind, sometimes without a conscious target.

Socialization is an important aspect in the development of personality. Socialization is the

process of molding and shaping an individual's personality. It helps the individual to conform to
the norms and values of the society. It also helps them to develop their personality.

Motivations, cultivation, and stereotypes

 Part of living in any society demands an individual to adhere to social standards of that
particular culture. Upon developing from an adolescent to an adult in society, people
must use different forms of socialization to prosper in their given culture.

Examples include affiliation, aggression, power, altruism, achievement, and approval,

among others. These motives have basic characteristics in common in the way they are
associated with specific goal- directed behavior.

 Cultural socialization refers to the process through which youth learn about a culture and
develop a sense of belonging to the cultural group (Umaña-Taylor & Fine, 2004). It is an
important socialization process that prepares youth for a racially/ethnically diverse and
conscious society (Hughes, et al., 2006).

 Gender socialization involves the teaching of gender stereotypes. Gender stereotypes are
certain behaviors and attitudes that are considered characteristic of boys or girls.

o An Example of gender stereotyping is that girls are passive and boys are
aggressive.

How can we stop gender stereotyping in society?

Media risks and parenting

 Effects of media use. on socialization have been identified in numerous studies (mainly
focusing on tele- vision): long-term implications for behavior, for example violence,
prosocial behavior, eating disorders, sexual experiences; cultivation of worldview
and values.

 Positive social networks directly affect children's development by giving them

opportunities to interact with a larger set of safe and caring adults. When children have
connections with other adults, they are able to experience a greater range of activities and
may develop new interests, different from those at home.

Media effects on social relationships

Although social media has many positive benefits, it has the potential to wreak havoc on a
relationship. Some of the negative effects of social media and relationships include decreased
time with a partner, missed connections, jealousy, conflict arising from disagreements or hurt
feelings, and negative comparisons.

Blurring boundaries between professional and private lives

The researchers found that employees who did not maintain clear boundaries between work and
free time were less likely to participate in activities that could help them relax. They were
therefore more exhausted and experienced a lower sense of balance and well-being in the
different key aspects of their lives.

Boundaries are the rules and guidelines workers implement for themselves and human resources
establish for a company to set clear lines between one's professional and personal life. Human
resources departments often develop protocols to protect employees from workplace harassment.

Media literacy as a goal and a tool

The goal of critical media literacy is to engage with media through critically examining
representations, systems, structures, ideologies, and power dynamics that shape and reproduce
culture and society.

Media literacy helps students learn how to determine whether something is credible. It also helps
them determine the "persuasive intent" of advertising and resist the techniques marketers use to
sell products. Recognize point of view. Every creator has a perspective.
