TEE106/03 Basic Electromagnetic Theory Assignment 2 (25%)

Submission Date: 26th March 2023 before 11:59:59pm.

Instructions:
1. This is an individual Assignment. No duplication of work will be tolerated.
Any plagiarism or collusion may result in disciplinary action, in addition to
ZERO mark being awarded to all involved.
2. You are to submit online of your answers in OAS system and it is your
responsibility to submit your Assignment correctly and timely. OAS system
doesn’t allow re-submission of Assignment. Marks will be awarded for
correct working steps and answers.
3. The total marks for Assignment 2 is 100 and it contributes 25% towards
the total grade.
4. Assignment 2 covers the topics in Unit 2 and Unit 3.
5. Assignment 2 has to be done individually. Answer all questions in
English.
6. Your Assignment must be word processed (single spacing) and clearly lay
out. Any additional appendices or attachments must be placed at the end
of the submitted document and must be referred to in the main body of the
Assignment, or it will not be read by the marker. Marks will be deducted
from handwritten and/or photo snap shot assignments.
7. All files or documents submitted must be labeled with your WOU ID and
name.
8. The use of Turnitin is not necessary for this Assignment.

Question 1 (20 Marks)
(a) Consider two equal point charges separated by a distance d. (2 marks)
If a third test charge is inserted at a point exactly midway
between the two charges, what is the amount of net force the
third charge would experience?

(b) State what happens when:-

i. Two like charges are brought into close proximity to (2 marks)


each other.
ii. Two unlike charges are brought into close proximity to (2 marks)
each other.
(c) State the units for resistivity and for current density. (2 marks)

(d) If the electric potential at a distance of 5cm from an isolated (2 marks)


positive point charge is +100V, determine the magnitude of
this charge. Use the given formula.

(e) A rectangular carbon block with its dimension is shown in (2 marks)

Given the resistivity of carbon at 20°C is ρ=3.5x10 -5Ωm,


calculate the resistance measured between the two square
ends. Use the given formula.

(f) A resistor has a resistance of 30Ω is connected across a
battery of emf 8V. Determine:-

i. The current. (2 marks)

ii. The terminal voltage of the battery. (2 marks)

iii. The power delivered by the emf. (2 marks)

iv. The power delivered to the external resistance. (2 marks)

Question 2 (20 Marks)

(a) State Ohm’s law in your own words. (3 marks)

(b) State Joule’s law in your own words. (3 marks)

(c) Find the equivalent resistance between a and c of the circuit (4 marks)
as shown in Figure 2.

(d) Find the total potential energy of the system of three (10 marks)
charges as shown in Figure 3. q 1 = 1.00 C, q2 = -4.00 C
and q3 = 3.00 C.

Question 3 (20 Marks)

(a) An electrical light bulb is rated at 240/80W.

i. What does the rating mean? (2 marks)

ii. The bulb is powered by a 240V direct-current (DC) (4 marks)


power supply. Calculate the current flowing through the
bulb and its resistance.
(b) State Gauss’ law in your own words. (2 marks)

(c) A charge of 170 C is at the center of a cube of edge 80cm:-

i. Determine the total flux through one face of the cube. (4 marks)
ii. Determine the total flux through the whole surface of the (3 marks)
cube.

(d) A cylindrical piece of (neutral) insulating material is placed in
an external electric field as shown in Figure 4.

Question 4 (20 Marks)

(a) Faradays’s law of induction can be written as e = -d/dt.

i. Base on the equation given above, state Faraday’s law (2 marks)


in your own words.
ii. Define briefly what are all the terms in the equation. (3 marks)
iii. What is the significance of the negative sign in the (2 marks)
equation above?

(b) A magnet moves down through a coil as shown in Figure 5. (5 marks)


Sketch and explain what should be the direction of the
induced current.

(c) The applied current on a coil is given by Io cos(0.5 t) where (8 marks)
Io is the maximum current and t is the time in seconds.
Sketch the current with respect to time starting at t=0 for two
periods of the alternating current. Correctly label the
important parameters in the vertical and horizontal axis.
If the induced voltage in the coil due to the current i, is
, write the equation for the induced voltage given
the current above.

Question 5 (20 Marks)

(a) A circular coil of radius 1cm has 200 turns. It is removed


from a magnetic field of 2T in a time of 0.1s. The field
direction is normal to the plane of the coil.
i. What is the magnitude of the average voltage induced (4 marks)
in the coil?
ii. If the coil is removed more slowly in a time of 1s, what is (2 marks)
the magnitude of the voltage induced now?
(b) A conductor located at x = 0.5 m, y = 0 and 0 < z < 2.0 m (2 marks)
carries a current of 6.0 A in the direction along the length
of the conductor T. Find the torque about the z
axis.
(c) The equation for the induced field can be written as (2 marks)
, where is the induced field, is the velocity and
is the magnetic field. State the two conditions needed for
the field to be induced.

(d) Explain briefly what Maxwell’s equations are used for. (4 marks)

(e) Give four applications of electromagnetic fields. (4 marks)

(f) Maxwell’s equation for Gauss’ law for electric fields is given (2 marks)
by . Light is a form of electromagnetic waves and
it also consists of photon particles, where they are no free
charges. Demonstrate how this equation can be rewritten to
reflect a situation where there are no charges.
