The systems theory is best to explain the nature of schools as a social organization. Under the systems
theory, it is best to examine some of the characteristics of schools including, structure, culture, climate,
leadership, decision-making, and the relationships among personnel (Bozkus, 2014).
SYSTEMS THEORY
STRUCTURE
- This have hierarchies of authority, goals, and role expectations similar to bureaucratic
organizations. Individual needs affect employee behavior, organizational goals are not firm,
informal organizations derive from interactions among individuals, and schools (Bozkus, 2014).
- Organization
It refers to the form of the enterprise or institution and the arrangement of the human and
material resources functioning in a manner to achieve the objectives of the enterprise. It
represents two or more than two people respectively specializing in functions of each perform,
working together towards a common goal as governed by formal rules of behavior.
CULTURE
- The school culture is influenced by the philosophy and core values of the school. It is also
continuously shaped by the culture of every individual member of the school.
- Norms are influential in shaping students’ character and values system. The norms or school
culture create a sense of place among students. School has become not only a place of learning
but also a home for them.
- In education, students with diverse backgrounds and cultures are often marginalized because
they are exposed to a curriculum with one predominant cultural bias. It does not cater to the
culture that they are familiar with and are a part of. This is why it is important to create a
curriculum that incorporates diverse perspectives. The teaching and learning process must
respond to physical, social, and cultural preferences of the children.
CLIMATE
- In social aspects of schools, an important aspect of leadership is the quality and systematic
effects of functions and behaviors as leaders (Bozkus, 2014).
- The Governance of Basic Education Act provided a way to enhance the system of leadership and
decision making process in school. Now, the principals are the local executives in their schools.
- Good leadership in schools is the practice of encouraging and enabling school-wide teaching
expertise to achieve a strong rate of progress for all learners. This leadership can be driven by
principals and executive staff in traditional leadership roles, as well as by school leaders and
teachers without defined leadership roles.
- The schools are mandated to submit their annual School Improvement Plan or SIP, which serves
as the basis for their budget and for evaluating their performance. ( Likewise, the teachers are
now empowered to develop innovations that will improve students’ achievement and
performance.
RELATIONSHIPS
- Social organizations like schools are cause from interaction among people both within and
outside of the organization. Relationships within school building and with the community are
essential elements of socialization and have significant impact on many vital processes (Bozkus,
2014).
- Strong relationships with teachers and school staff can dramatically enhance students’ level of
motivation and therefore promote learning. Students who have access to more strong
relationships are more academically engaged, have stronger social skills, and experience more
positive behavior.
