Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction (kulang sa references)
Internet is a system architecture that has changed the way of communications
and methods in businesses that allows various computer networks to connect
(Britannica, 2021). The origin of the Internet goes way back to the year 1983 and
ARPANET was the first name of the now so-called Internet. In the present time,
everything that we do involves using the internet, may it be for businesses, online
classes, news, entertainment, and the like.
Stability is the state of being firm or the strength to endure (Merriam-Webster,
2021). This refers to the sturdiness of an object without being distorted or interrupted.
Based on the stability of an object, you can see different results upon using it and how it
affects the users. According to Tyler Woodward (walang reference), internet stability is a
term used to describe the quality of internet connection an individual has and how fast it
can process commands needed like downloading, opening websites, and the like.
(Woodward, 2018)
Nowadays during the Covid-19 pandemic, Online classes are being implemented
as a mode of learning as it is done in order to prevent spreading the virus. This mode of
distance learning is still a huge adjustment to students even after being implemented
here in our country, the Philippines. Internet Stability is one of the key factors that make
online learning feasible, but not all students have the access to its stability.
According to Averilla, (2021) (walang reference), Nowadays people need a stable
internet to go on in their daily lives. In this situation that we are in, the Internet is one of
the most important sources especially for students who are attending online classes.
Even after a year of this online learning, students are still navigating how they can have
a stable internet connection during their asynchronous and synchronous classes. This
may also have an impact on their academic performance which this research will aim to
know.

Background of the Study
Internet stability is still one of the most worrisome topics when discussing online
distance learning, as students depend on their academic performance on their internet
stability. According to Enriquez (2021), “It’s not every day we have a strong internet
connection. Sometimes, I get disconnected during online classes, and with that, I don’t
get to hear and learn from the discussion”. Having disconnected due to the unstable
internet connection of a student may affect their performance on their academics,
causing them not to understand what is being taught during synchronous classes.
People are still figuring out what they can do in order to have a stable internet
connection. According to Amadora (2020), We do have internet plans here in the
Philippines but they aren’t stable. There isn’t a day where students don’t complain about
how slow or how unstable their internet connection is during their online classes. While
online distance learning has been implemented all over the country, students who are
from the city are still encountering this type of difficulty. How much more is it for the
students from the countryside or the provinces? Some students even go and climb up
mountains or to the highest place in their area just to get a signal that they’ll be using for
their online learning. This problem has been the main focus of this study with the
objective of determining the Impact of Internet Stability on the Academic Performance of
Grade 12 Senior High School students.

Theoretical Framework (table number 3 lang yung accepted ENVIRONMENT PART
LANG)
A theory found was Walberg’s Theory of Educational Productivity. His idea
attempted to explain student achievement. Being aware of the causes and
circumstances that influence it, might provide insight into why a student isn't achieving
his or her maximum potential. As a result, their grades do not reflect their ability.

Figure 1: Walberg’s Theory of Educational Productivity

This theory divides into three (3) theoretical models: Characteristics of the
learner, the quality and quantity of instructions the learner receives, and the learning
environment of the learner (Haertel et al., 1983). Each model has variables that
Walberg considers as a factor that can affect a child’s academic performance.
The first model which is the Characteristics of the learner has 3 variables: Ability,
Development, and Motivation. The first three (3) variables refer to the characteristics of
the student, this allows the student’s ability and knowledge on a topic also if what is
being taught to them is appropriate for their age and cognitive thinking.
The second model is the Quality and Quantity of the Instructions the learner
receives, these include the two (2) variables: Quality and Quantity. Students perceive
what they learn especially if the lessons and lectures are delivered with a little bit of
twist and effort. Once the quality of delivering the lessons is complete, the quantity of
what they are being taught comes next and falls into place. Knowing how to deliver the
quality of teaching, it is already easy for the number of lectures that are going to be
taught (Exploring your Mind, 2021).
Lastly, in the Environment of the learner model, the last four (4) variables include
Home, Classroom, Peer Group, and Mass Media. A student’s learning environment
plays a big role in their academic performance and also influences how would they do in
their studies. A learner must have a decent learning environment in which the learner
can study at peace without distractions like outside noise and insufficient lighting
(Givaland, 2021). A learner’s academic performance may also be influenced by their
peers. According to Filade et al. (2019), Students who are most likely to be smart and
have a group of peers that are blunt may cause the learner to be demotivated. This can
also be vice versa, if a learner is blunt but has intellectual peers, they may be motivated
to study and have improvements in their academic performance. Mass media has now
been a primary source of learning, whereas, lectures and modules on a specific topic
can be found on the Internet and other platforms. Using mass media has both a positive
and negative effect on learners depending on how they use mass media for their
studies and academic performance (Gabagambi. J. P., & Song, W, 2018)

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following people:

Students. Students will know what they should do if their internet connection is
not stable. They will also have an idea on how to resolve it and adjust if it happens to
them. Students will also know what's the recommended internet Mbps.

Teachers. Teachers will become more considerate to their students if they are
late in their class or pass their activities and assignments late since they will know that
some students do not have a stable internet connection.

Parents. As parents’ guide their children during their synchronous and
asynchronous classes, they may encounter a time where their child would complain
about getting a new Internet router or change their WiFi Brand or Company. Parents
may also benefit from this study in order to know what is best for their children and their
studies.
