SOCIOLOGY MAJOR, B.A. – 2020-2021
To qualify for admission into the Sociology major, students must complete the courses in Areas A and B with a UC grade-point
average of 2.3. Courses in Areas C and D will not be included in the pre-major GPA computation but must be taken for a letter grade
and will influence the overall major GPA. Acceptance into the pre-major does not guarantee admission to full major status. Upon
satisfactory completion of the pre-major courses, students must complete a change of major petition, available in the Sociology
Undergraduate Office.
Students must complete pre-major courses and achieve the minimum GPA requirements prior to the completion of 144 total
units. Courses in areas A and B must be completed with a grade of “C-” or higher.

MAJOR REGULATIONS
PREREQUISITES ............................... Check the General Catalog for the prerequisites to all listed courses.
P/NP GRADING OPTION ................. Up to 8 units combined of the following courses may be taken P/NP for major credit: Sociology 190A, 191CA, 194, 198, 199,
199RA. All other major courses, including those applied to the major from other departments, must be taken
for letter grades.
SUBSTITUTIONS ............................... In the major requirements permissible only by petition to the department chair and dean.
RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS ..... At least 20 UD units in major while in residence at UCSB.
G.P.A. REQUIREMENTS.................. At least 2.0 overall UC average in all upper-division major courses and all courses (Prep and UD) for the major.
DOUBLE MAJORS............................. With the approval of each department chairperson, up to a total of 8 units may be applied simultaneously to both UD majors
