Multi-grade teaching comes with different kinds of challenges. It was like entering a
world you have no idea of who and what you’ll encounter. The movie showed the struggles of
the parents, the students, and most especially of the teachers. As Mrs. Stacey Bess sets foot at
the so-called school, she met students of various ages, beliefs, culture, and with different needs
and learning style. What I’ve realized is that, multi-grade teaching is even harder when you’re
not trained to handle such. It requires not only flexibility, ability, and knowledge, but also being
capable of understanding each and every student – who they are, what they are, and what do they
need.

Considering the fact that the place is for the homeless, the life there is even poorer that I
thought. Most of the children doesn’t have proper clothes, proper hygiene, proper education, and
enough food to eat. What’s worse is that their parents have vices. They spent most of their time
watching TV, smoking, and even taking drugs, that they lack time for their children.

Mrs. Stacey Bess is a determined teacher with a big passion and love for teaching since
she was a kid. I admire how she didn’t give up despite her hardships since the beginning of her
teaching career. I remembered a line in which she said that that wasn’t she expected and that she
wasn’t trained for that, but her husband gave her courage and told her that she’s not just a teacher
but also a mother. With that, she pushed through and kept doing what she’s doing. She gained
not only her students’ trust but also the parents’. Mrs. Bess is a representation of a true teacher.
She poured out her heart and treated everyone as a family. I loved how she came to know her
students, their talents, and how she believed in their potentials.

The story is inspiring and uplifting. It made me realize that wherever there is courage,
there is hope. We may be facing different struggles in life, but God will not let us undergo
circumstances we cannot conquer. In every situation, there is a lesson that will either break you
or make you. And in the story, they choose to make this lesson be their strong foundation to
overcome every challenge and be better. There is no such thing as too late. We just have to
decide and try.

The movie left a big impact to me as a future educator. I realized that more than being
knowledgeable, teachers should be flexible enough for her students. And that a teacher is really
not just a teacher. A teacher is and should be someone her students need her to be. It’s more than
just a job, teaching is a mission. “I’m not done yet” – those were the words of Mrs. Stacey Bess
which made me realize even more that being a teacher doesn’t stop when your work is over.
Teaching is an endless profession, and more that, it is our devotion.
