When we need to search for something in the internet, we will find more or less
hundreds of related information. The power of the internet allows students to
experience and visitplaces they might not be able to see in person. But, just like when
travelling in the real world, it’s important to be safe when navigating site online.
Let’s Recall
Here are the examples of web
browsers that you may
effectively use in searching
information through the use of
internet.
3
How do you navigate the Web?
By entering the address or URL of the website
in your web browser, or by clicking links you will
see different websites that have the information
that you are searching. The most commonly-used
and easy to access webbrowser is GOOGLE.
Let’s Explore
Long time ago, searching for an answer in a particular question was time
consuming. So, when your grandfather or grandmother or even your parents have
assignment to search, most of the time they have to find it using books. Because of the
limited books available around them, going in a library was their last resort.
But luckily nowadays, it is far different. With modern technology, in just one click,
you can possibly get the information you want and all the information you need.
This module will help you to use this modern technology, especially searching
engines to make your searching experience easy. This will also help you to get the most
accurate information.
Let’s Elaborate
Search
The Google search keeps you in the know about things that matter to you. Find
quick answers, explore your interests, and stay up to date with new discoveries. Aside,
from giving the information that you are searching, many more or almost all the
information is also available on the said site.
It sounds simple but students need to know that the quality of the search terms they
put in the Google search box will determine the quality of their result.
There are a LOT of tips and tricks for Googling but I think it’s best to have students first
master the basics of doing a proper Google search.
Below are some basic tips on how to effectively search in Google.
Type in some simple search terms using only the important keywords.
• If the initial results aren’t what you want, alter the search terms and get more
specific (get clues from the initial search results e.g. you might see synonyms that
would work or get ideas from the “People Also Ask” section).
• Use quotation marks if you want your keywords in an exact order, e.g. “raining cats
and dogs”.
4
For instance, you are looking for information about “What is the Smallest Planet in
theSolar System?”
Here are the steps:
1. Go to any web browser.
2. Go to the search box.
3. Type the exact information that you are searching. “What is the Smallest Planet in
the Solar System?”
From there, many websites will possibly appear that may contain the information that
you are looking. However, not all its content may be accurate. So, you needto learn how
to evaluate the website.
5
3. Look for the answer in your question.
Get the information that you think give the accurate and factual answerto
your question.
4. Consider the credibility of the author or the website.
Be observant on the author’s name or website that post the information.
5. Consider the purpose of the site
Some authors or websites may have other purpose aside from giving usefulinformation.
6. Look for the date.
Factual information 10 years ago, may no longer valid today.
7. Cross check
Compare and assess the information that you get from different sources or
website.
