CS 1104 Learning Journal Unit 1

The student completed the first week of their CS course by reading the course materials and installing necessary software. Most concepts from the readings were familiar from prior electronics and logic classes, but required refreshing. The student participated in the discussion forum, answering questions and learning from classmates' responses. They also completed the week's assignment simulating doors to further their understanding of using the software interface and how computers work at a basic hardware level.

CS 1104 Learning Journal Unit 1

I started the first week of this course by going to the course forum and quickly reading the course
overview I found there. Then I turn to the course outline to gather all possible information about
the course to get off to a good start and keep track of all subsequent lessons. Before starting to
study this week's readings, I installed the necessary software so that I could try out all the
examples that could be found in the manual. Finally, it's time for me to start reading the assigned
chapters. Most of the concepts illustrated in these chapters are familiar to me because in high
school I studied logic and electronics. In logic class we practice Boolean algebra and in
electronics class we build simple circuits using breadboards, conductors, transistors and gates.
However, the concept that I learned almost ten years ago needs to be refreshed in my mind.

For example, one that I don't remember at all, but I certainly researched, is multiplexers and
demultiplexers. I'm sure I've used both in some electronics lessons, but when I found them in
front of me in a textbook, I couldn't remember how they worked. After reading all the assigned
chapters, I entered the discussion forum to answer three questions. The first question about the
importance of Boolean functions in hardware architecture made me think a lot because as a
software engineer I often think of Boolean functions as a condition to analyze to make software
operation rather than the entire basic basis of all modern electronic devices. I then answered two
other questions and posted my answer. While waiting to unlock the discussion forum to rate and
reply to my classmates' posts, I read this week's assignment. Although I installed the necessary
software, I followed all the instructions to simulate the doors and got more familiar with the
interface and how to use the software.

When I finished simulating the doors, I went back to the discussion forum to answer and
note the messages of my classmates. They did a great job and it was interesting to read their
responses to the same question I answered. I learned something from them and tried to add value
to the answer I provided by adding something I learned that they may have missed. Then I came
back a day later to read the feedback my colleagues had given me. Fortunately, my post was well
received and appreciated by those who read and rated it. I am very satisfied with this course
because I am sure it will help me better understand the architecture of the devices that I use every
day. I tend to take a computer running the software I write for granted, but I sure understand how
the world below works will help me write better and more efficient code.
