I. Introduction
Lapay Bantigue is a local dance art festival that
originated from the graceful movements of hovering birds
known as seagulls, or the LAPAY, found abundant in Barangay
Bantigue, Masbate. Flocks of lapay seagulls created a
marvelous scene and inspired the old folks to come up with a
local folk dance that since then has been embraced and has
become an important aspect of the local culture of the people of Brgy. Banitgue and the
entire Masbate. This paper aims to present information about Lapay Bantigue as the
festival dance, contextualized by the great artists.

II. Brief History

I still remember during the discussion of my subject teacher in MAPEH about

festival dances in the Philippines, she suddenly shared her knowledge of where the
Lapay Bantigue began. According to her, there was a well-known artist who visited
Masbate for a special occasion. During the Island Hoping, the artist noticed the white
birds flying along the coastal area in Masbate City and its front village of Bantigue. With
the influence of the bird’s movements, the artist had an idea to create a dance using the
idea of the said bird, and now Lapay Bantigue is celebrated in both the province and city
of Masbate and has become Masbate’s identity. I am amazed by the idea that the artist
is really brilliant. To make this research more credible, I searched for more information
to validate the story of my former and this is what I found. " The
Lapay Bantigue Dance Festival It is celebrated annually during
the City Anniversary on the 30th day of September. This event
highlights the traditional folk dance created by "Lola Felisa"
many years ago, when she imitated the
graceful movement of the seagull (locally
known as the Lapay). The dance has evolved and is now
recognized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines as one of the
official folk dances of the country. This dance was also recognized
during the Spanish Colonization. " The idea of Lapay origin is truly
magnificent,

In another story, according to legend, the Lapay dance was offered to Saint
Philomena, patron saint of fishermen, by a villager in exchange for a plentiful catch of
fish and by a woman in exchange for the Saint's healing of her unwell child. As a result,
these folks performed this dance in order to keep their pledge to the Saint. Thankfully,
the child survived. The fisherman caught a lot of fish after being healed. Since then, the
locals have had to dance the "Lapay Bantigue" to thank St. Philomena for her blessing
and, of course, for their productive fishing.
One of the primary features of the festival is the Lapay
Bantigue Dance Festival. The dance is performed by the great-
billed heron, scientifically known as Ardea Sumatrana or locally
known as Lapay. This dance was inspired by the exquisite flapping
of the Lapay's wings, and it was choreographed by "Lola" Felisa
Tupas, who was intrigued by the Lapay's graceful movements, leading her and the
fishermen of barangay Bantigue to imitate some of the moves.

III. Fun-fact
Some say it's a seagull, some say it’s a heron. But according to my research, it’s
really a heron. I think it is a common mistake for Lapay birds to be mistaken as seagulls.
Lapay birds, or Great-billed Herons are larger in size, have longer necks, and have
longer bills. What makes them similar to seagulls, though, is that they both live near
coastal areas.

IV. How the dance is Characterized

Lapay Bantigue Dance's choreography displays the religious
symbolism, abundance, artistry, and festivity of Lapay Bantigue
Dance. The stylistic strong appeal showcasing the strength of
survival of the Heron locally known as Lapay along the estuarine of
the city's coastal barangays, particularly in Barangay Bantigue, has
brought a cheering victory, allowing a seamless vision of hope and pride towards a
harmonious and united Masbatenos.

V. Costume of Lapay Bantigue

Camisa de chino and pants for male and kimona and

long skirts for women are the usual costume for Lapay
Bantigue

VI. Dance Steps of Lapay

1. LUPAD
Flutter your arms gracefully and step sideways for 16 counts. After this, face
your partner and do this step again for 16 counts.
2. KUMINTANG
Raise your right arm and do a horizontal thumbs up. Rotate your hand and wrist
four counts clockwise, and another four counts counter-clockwise. While doing
this, your partner will go around you while doing the “Lupad” step. After
completing each of the four counts, you and your partner will change positions,
meaning, your partner will do the Kuomintang and you will dance around him.

3. STEP TUKA
While facing your partner, place the back of your palm on your forehead and do
a pecking motion with your back bent. Do this for 8 counts. Then, while still doing
this step, go opposite ways eg. you going to the front and your partner going to
the back. Do this four times.

4. Face your partner and bend at each other in opposite directions. Stomp for eight
counts then raise your arms while twirling as you face your partner. Do this four
times.

5. Move your hands up and down for 16 counts. Then face your partner doing the
same step in synchronization.

6. Do the same movements in Step 1.

VII. Sharing my Experience

Four years ago, I was one of the people who

came to celebrate the Lapay Bantigue. I can’t imagine
how huge the celebration is. The colorful costumes
and lovely rhythm of the bands, together with the
gigantic decorated cars, are still fresh in my memory.
I was with my friends who came to the city just to witness the crusade. Unfortunately,
we only saw 2 performers at that time because we needed to get home early. However,
it was a great experience. I am suggesting all the non-masbatenios come and join us
during the celebration of the Lapay Bantigue. We assure you that your visit will be worth
it
