In another story, according to legend, the Lapay dance was offered to Saint
Philomena, patron saint of fishermen, by a villager in exchange for a plentiful catch of
fish and by a woman in exchange for the Saint's healing of her unwell child. As a result,
these folks performed this dance in order to keep their pledge to the Saint. Thankfully,
the child survived. The fisherman caught a lot of fish after being healed. Since then, the
locals have had to dance the "Lapay Bantigue" to thank St. Philomena for her blessing
and, of course, for their productive fishing.
One of the primary features of the festival is the Lapay
Bantigue Dance Festival. The dance is performed by the great-
billed heron, scientifically known as Ardea Sumatrana or locally
known as Lapay. This dance was inspired by the exquisite flapping
of the Lapay's wings, and it was choreographed by "Lola" Felisa
Tupas, who was intrigued by the Lapay's graceful movements, leading her and the
fishermen of barangay Bantigue to imitate some of the moves.
III. Fun-fact
Some say it's a seagull, some say it’s a heron. But according to my research, it’s
really a heron. I think it is a common mistake for Lapay birds to be mistaken as seagulls.
Lapay birds, or Great-billed Herons are larger in size, have longer necks, and have
longer bills. What makes them similar to seagulls, though, is that they both live near
coastal areas.
1. LUPAD
Flutter your arms gracefully and step sideways for 16 counts. After this, face
your partner and do this step again for 16 counts.
2. KUMINTANG
Raise your right arm and do a horizontal thumbs up. Rotate your hand and wrist
four counts clockwise, and another four counts counter-clockwise. While doing
this, your partner will go around you while doing the “Lupad” step. After
completing each of the four counts, you and your partner will change positions,
meaning, your partner will do the Kuomintang and you will dance around him.
3. STEP TUKA
While facing your partner, place the back of your palm on your forehead and do
a pecking motion with your back bent. Do this for 8 counts. Then, while still doing
this step, go opposite ways eg. you going to the front and your partner going to
the back. Do this four times.
4. Face your partner and bend at each other in opposite directions. Stomp for eight
counts then raise your arms while twirling as you face your partner. Do this four
times.
5. Move your hands up and down for 16 counts. Then face your partner doing the
same step in synchronization.
