Field Study 2—Participation and Assistantship for Pre- Service Teachers is a

subject taken by pre-service teachers. The subject allows the filed study students to
observe, assist, and participate in the actual teaching field. The subject allows the
students to experience practical and relevant experience which they can use in their
future endeavors. It is a school- based subject which has a goal of developing the
competencies, skills, and knowledge of the pre-service teachers.

The Field Study 2 subject offers a good foundation where future teachers like me
can reflect on the existing practices, strategies, methods, pedagogies, or theories
applied in a classroom. Additionally, the subject promotes a better understanding on how
we can better improve a classroom environment when we become teachers soon or how
can we create our own unique way of imparting the lessons to students in a way that
they can easily comprehend and understand the concepts.

Furthermore, field study has given me opportunities to experience what its like to
become a teacher. Throughout my journey in this course, I have a lot of unforgettable
moments which I for sure carry with me as I embark on a new journey. Field Study 2 did
not only teach me trivial things which I need as a future teacher myself, but the subject
has tested and challenged many times to try harder, to do better, and to see value of
things clearer. Thus, this e-portfolio contains the highlights and my reflection during my
deployment.

BELIEFS ON TEACHING AND LEARNING

As I have engaged and indulged myself with experiences related to teaching, the
way I perceive teaching has totally changed. Before, I only see teaching as a job and a
profession one can hold for recognition. That teaching is just purely and simply
delivering lessons from textbooks and just imparting it to the students and then, that’s it.
I did not know that behind the smiles, laughter, and happy out going of teachers, there
are burdens, stresses, and breakdowns they have experienced, and I can attest to that
now because I am pursuing my degree in Education. Being a teacher is never a simple
task, you must need a lot of patience, perseverance, and dedication to complete pile of
videos to watch, lesson plans to continue, and research to do in order to create a
learning environment that is conducive and participative. I did not know that teaching
could be this hard, there would be times that I want to give up and honestly, I sometimes
regret that I took this course because it is super draining and tiring. However, whenever I
see the smiles and faces of the children, I am again reminded that I choose the right
path and it made me realized my purpose. Truly, teaching is imparting lessons that is
beyond the pages of the book and four walls of the classroom; teaching goes beyond
what we see and hear.

COMPILATION OF WORKSHEETS

REFLECTIONS ON THE FIELD STUDY AREA

EPISODE 1 (RESPONSIBILITIES OF A TEACHER)

All certificated personnel must carry out the duties and obligations delegated to
them by the superintendent or designee. Teachers' professional responsibilities include far more
than just classroom instruction. Responsibilities that should not only be fulfilled but maintained
as it can affect the medium of instruction or learning among students.

In episode 1, As I have observe teachers in Musuan Integrated School and CMU-

Laboratory High School, I have inferred that being a teacher entails bigger responsibilities. They
include, but are not limited to, studying, and researching new knowledge and instructional
techniques; assessing students' work; keeping records; lesson planning and preparation;
conferences with students, parents, and administrators; in-service meetings; and supervising
students outside of the classroom. Teachers must be in their classrooms or other designated
places, unless otherwise directed by the building principal. Every duty hour is required for
educational planning, preparation, and meetings with students, parents, and faculty members.
All instructors must maintain a professional look, personal appearance, general decorum, moral
standards, and behavior that fits their community rank.

Indeed, teachers are not just teachers, they play bigger roles more than their
profession wherein they can be a comedian, singer, dancer, artist, and etc. They do not just only
plan, prepare, and deliver lessons but they must design instructions that can stimulate active
learning and engagement among students. Teachers don’t only provide opportunities for
students but instead, they provide appropriate avenues where students can maximize their skills
and reach their full potential. Therefore, teachers are an asset and plays a significant role in a
micro or macro setting.

EPISODE 2 (QUALITIES AND SKILLS OF A GOOD TEACHER)

The basic functions that schools are expected to accomplish within the framework of
compulsory education vary depending on the situation. Aside from the special needs of each
time period and region, the primary aim of a school is to assure, on the one hand, great student
performance and, on the other hand, equal enjoyment of chances for all students. Schools,
particularly today, are being challenged to carry out these responsibilities while taking into
account contemporary issues such as multicultural coexistence, technological supremacy, the
progress of science, and the quick renewal of knowledge. Simultaneously, schools strive to
prepare pupils not only for the present, but also for the ever-changing future.

The aforementioned statements define the characteristics of a school however, it mirrors

a teacher’s role, too. In this episode, I have learned that a teacher should have the necessary
qualifications and professional knowledge to be able to teach effectively and create a
meaningful and relevant opportunities and resources for students to learn. I have learned in this
episode that a teacher must be a role model at all times and must be worthy to emulate. In this
episode, I have learned that aside from the fact that certain qualities should be met by teachers,
they must embody these characteristics in order to build a classroom climate that is healthy and
positive. Specifically, a teacher must not be bias and show fairness to everyone regardless of
the gender, ethnicity, race, religion, and etc. Second, they must be creative, patient, and have a
strong work ethic to ensure that they can perform the duties well. They must also be a leader,
critical thinker, and problem solver since there are circumstances which we cannot control.
Some of these qualities are not possessed by teachers that we have observed and assisted
during our deployment in Musuan Integrated School, however, they have showed perseverance
and how dedicated and passionate they are in teaching the children.

Given the transient nature of teaching and the complexity of a curriculum, a definitive
and exact description of these qualifications is neither feasible nor desirable. This means what a
teacher should possess is not measured by any tool but as long as you have the “good
qualities” a teacher must have, then, you have what it takes to give and nourish the capabilities
of your students.

EPISODE 3 (WRITING MY LESSON PLAN)

Teachers may ponder "which way they should go" before entering a classroom.
This usually means that teachers must plan out their activities in their classrooms. The ultimate
result of a complex planning process that involves yearly, term, and unit plans is the planning of
daily classes. A lesson plan is a written description of how students will progress toward certain
goals. It explains the instructional strategy that will result in student learning.

In this episode, I encountered difficulties and also, I have realized things

particularly on what areas I should improve in my lesson plan. I had difficulty constructing my
objectives in a way that it is simplified, contextualize, and follows the SMART format. However,
with the proper guidance with my Field Study 2 instructor, I have crafted a lesson plan that is
contextualized and contains activities that are aligned with my objectives. Our cooperating
teacher in CMU- Laboratory High School does not utilize lesson plans and just only plan his
instructions based on the curriculum guide. Meanwhile, teachers in Musuan Integrated School
utilized detailed lesson plans, DLL, and etc. in delivering their instructions or lessons. Based on
my observation, having a good lesson plan does not mean that you can have a hundred percent
success rate in delivering the lesson as there are factors which can hamper and disrupt the flow
of your teaching.

Nevertheless, teachers in Musuan Integrated School and CMU-Laboratory High School

are both good teachers who have applied pedagogies and methods in delivering the content of
their lessons. Each of them has a certain way of teaching the lessons to the students as they
consider the learning level and ability of the different group of students.

EPISODE 4 (TEACHING DEMONSTRATION)

Teaching demonstration is a teacher education strategy that lets student teachers to

practice and improve their teaching skills in a low-risk, simulated classroom setting. It provides
continual training for student teachers and retraining for classroom teachers. These practice
sessions allow student- teachers to practice their teaching methods before implementing them
in the classroom. Also, it enables student- teachers to prepare for a variety of classroom
circumstances, such as working with students of varying ability levels and backgrounds.

In this learning episode, we have experienced what it’s like to deliver a lesson in front of
the students in an actual teaching field. Although, in this subject, we have only delivered the
lessons in front of my classmates however, in our SCIED61 subject, we have experienced
teaching in an actual setting in Musuan Integrated School. It was hard to manage your
classmates as your audience/students, how much more in an actual classroom setting? There
were times that students were unfocused and are easily distracted. However, I was able to get
their attention again as I have integrated reward system method in a classroom. Again, a good
lesson plan does not ensure a perfect delivery of the lesson because the lesson plan is just a
tool for guiding you how you will teach but you are the one controlling the whole classroom;
thus, you have the ability to select, structure, and deliver complicated or simple content so that
the students can learn it.

Through teaching demonstration, it gave me the idea on what to improve and how can I
teach my students effectively. Teaching demonstration allows for valuable self-evaluation and
peer feedback which can give you the knowledge on how you can encourage audience
participation and how to apply strategies to stimulate student engagement and interest.

EPISODE 5 (SELECTED RESPONSE TEST TYPE: MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

(MCQ’s)

Every mark a student receives for coursework, or an examination contributes to the

module's overall mark or grade, which in turn influences degree categorization in some way.
Popular approaches for analyzing raw data generated by multiple choice question (MCQ) tests
are not always understood, sometimes with disastrous outcomes. Students, like everyone else,
want to perform their best and achieve their goals and through proper construction of multiple
choice questions (MCQ) which is commonly used in a classroom setting, it can be possible.

Although, me and my groupmates were not able to construct multiple choice questions
test items, I can say that this aspect of teaching is very important since it can also affect the
performance of students or scores of students. For the fact that we were not able to construct
this type of test type, we can still relate with the difficulties it bears. I understood we must
construct it in a way that it purports what it wants to measure. As future teachers, we must instill
in our minds that in crafting an MCQ, we must identify the topic or problem, as well as a series
of alternatives or possible solutions that include a key, which is the best response to the
question, and a number of distractors, which are reasonable but erroneous answers to the
question. Also, we must avoid too tricky questions and using unfamiliar words. We must have
that certain general strategies which we can use in constructing multiple choice questions
(MCQ).

Generally, assessment is the primary driving factor for learning for so many learners
today' and many would probably also agree that most of us are motivated by results, given that
our funding is contingent on demonstrating that this learning has occurred and that we have
played a role in it. As future teachers, we must understand that being a good teachers means
crafting a good test items for students.
EPISODE 6 (THE TABLE OF SPECIFICATIONS)

Have you ever felt as a student that the test you studied for was wholly or partially
unrelated to the class activities you participated in? Have you ever heard those student
complaints as a teacher? This is a regular occurrence in most classrooms. There is frequently
an actual and perceived mismatch between the topic discussed in class and the material scored
at the end of the chapter/unit examination and one technique that teachers might use to address
this issue is to create a table of specification.

During our deployment in CMU- Laboratory High School and Musuan Integrate School,
we were not able to construct a table of specification. However, as a science education student,
we know how to create one since it was taught to us by our instructors. For me, TOS is an
integral part in assessing students’ performance because TOS can be used to in framing the
test creation decision-making process and improving the validity of teachers' evaluations based
on tests built for classroom use. Also, TOS can help you determine what specific type of test will
you employ that is aligned with your objectives. Also, it can help you determine the number of
hours and items for each coverage. It permits the teacher to create a test that focuses on the
important topics and weights those sections depending on their value.

Moreover, I have realized in this episode that as future teachers, we must be aware that
the relative emphasis that the objectives and subject matter will get is determined by the focus
provided to each of the objectives and subject matter during the teaching time. Before testing,
TOS should be prepared. To have content sampling and item validity, the teacher should create
a table of specifications. These requirements may assist the teacher in becoming more
effective. To put it another way, it will assist the instructor in organizing teaching and learning,
assessment, and evaluation, and all the resources he intends to attain during the instruction.

EPISODE 7 (BASICS OF ITEM ANALYSIS)

Since junior high school, we have experienced how item analysis is done since are one
of the principal participants in doing so. However, this important aspect of teaching and learning
are often overlooked and neglected as many of us do not know the significance it has. Item
analysis is the practice of examining student responses to specific test items (questions) in
order to evaluate the quality of those items as well as the test as a whole and it must be done
after a test or examination is administered to determine the reliability and validity of the test
questions.

Honestly speaking, we were not able to conduct an item analysis in Musuan Integrated
School and in the CMU- Laboratory High School because of time- schedule conflict and other
extracurricular activities and holidays that hindered us in doing so. Nevertheless, based on my
previous experiences, conducting item analysis is always done after a test and it is done to
improve items that will be used again in future tests, but it can also be used to remove unclear
or misleading items in a single test administration.

In this episode, I have realized what are the things that I must consider and what are the
things I should keenly be vigilant of as we compute the difficulty index (p-value) and
discrimination index (DI) with distractor efficiency (DE). Thus, variation in additional item
characteristics like discrimination and guessing should be dealt with during the construction and
selection of items.

EPISODE 8 (INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT)

Effective instruction requires the creation of adequate and relevant instructional

materials. Instructional materials, typically in the form of a thorough course of study or training
plan, should be based on an analysis approach that has been well planned, arranged, and
carried out. It can be inferred that instructional material are used by teachers as an aid or
support to their instruction. Simply, using instructional resources in the classroom can assist the
teacher in explaining new ideas to pupils in a way that they can understand. This improves the
effectiveness of teaching and learning.

As I have developed my digitalized instructional plan considering the ADDIE Model

(Analysis, Designing, Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating). At first, I had difficulty
following the steps because opted to have a localized instructional material but since I
considered my audiences which are my classmates and the available resources that I have, the
most convenient to design and develop is to have a digitalized instructional material which is my
PowerPoint Presentation, video, pictures, and worksheets which I used during my
demonstration. I can say that my instructional material is not perfect and needs further
improvement.

Therefore, in developing or making your instructional material, you must first consider
the preferences of your audience, their background, etc. Words only convey little to no
concreteness in the teaching learning process. In practice, the form of instructional materials
utilized in teaching is determined by what the teacher want to demonstrate.

EPISODE 9 (DOABLE ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL)

Action Research is a scholarly paradigm that results in action for continual

improvement in our teaching and learning practices, providing faculty with instant classroom
return and documentation of completing our educational duties. To simply put, action research
is done because we want to improve something in a classroom. We specifically do this kind of
research to help and solve a problem.

In making our action research, we really had a hard time considering that we only have a
little time in doing it because of some activities required by other subjects. Time constraints
were the primary problem we encountered. However, with the help of one another, we were
able to make our proposal and present it to the class for it to be evaluated. As Ma’am Garin and
the two evaluators helped us in improving our action research, I was glad that we did the
proposal because there were a lot of things which we failed to check or foresee. They gave us
recommendations and did some revisions in our paper especially the title where the variables
are lacking. We have not followed the master’s format in creating the title because we thought
that as long as you have the solution or intervention, then that’s it. But, as we defended our
paper, we were enlightened and realized the lapses and errors we have committed as we made
our doable action research. Our title was change from “PhET Interactive Simulations: A
Technology Assisted Instruction Approach Towards Learning Physics” to “Students’
Engagement, Science Process Skills, and Academic Performance in a Technology Assisted
Environment”. Also, they have suggested to add ANCOVA as our statistical tool to make the
result of our research more reliable.

Overall, the experience I had in making the classroom- based action research proposal
gave me an opportunity to explore another field in research. I am thankful to our instructor and
to the evaluators for guiding us and instilling valuable knowledge which we can use as we
conduct the study and make revisions. Indeed, everything is possible when you persevere and
work hard.

EVIDENCE OF LEARNING (PICTURES)

RETROSPECTION

Teaching and learning, these two words describes my whole learning experience
in Field Study 2. I experienced what its like to become a teacher while also learning about trivial
things which I need to consider as I teach soon. I can say that students are really diverse, and it
is very hard to handle students especially in elementary years. In Musuan Integrated School,
there were times when we teach them read and write, they do not listen to you and prefers to
talk with his/her seatmate or if you teach them to read, they will go around the classroom and
play even though they are not yet finish reading. As what as I have observed, elementary
students really need a proper guidance, and you should be dominant and authoritative if you
want them to listen to you. However, they are very sweet, and you can really see how they love
to be recognized and appreciated even with very small things. On the other hand, when we
observed the preschool students, I was perplexed because it was different from what I
expected. I expected that they would be naughty and noisy, but they were properly behaving
and just staying in their respective seats unless called by the teacher. Meanwhile, high school
students are very participative and active in class, however, they tend to be so noisy and
sometimes do not listen to the teacher, but I saw how they are very eager to learn since often
ask questions if they clarifications or if they are curious. In CMU- Laboratory High School,
students have the basic knowledge of the concepts, and their level of learning is a bit higher
compared to students in MIS. Just like students in MIS, the students in CMU- Laboratory High
School are easily distracted and as what I have observed, if the teacher is not looking or does
not focus on them, they do tasks not related to lessons like drawing on their notebooks,
coloring, etc. Indeed, I have observed different kinds of students during my stay in Musuan
Integrated School and CMU- Laboratory High School and it gave me the opportunity to observe,
assist, and experience the reality of being a teacher.
