2. The wedge shown can slide without friction on a horizontal floor. Mass of the
wedge is M and its angle of inclination is θ = 300. A block of mass M slides down
the wedge without friction when released on its inclined face. If path of the block
relative to the ground makes an angle of φ = 600 with the horizontal, find the ratio
of mass of the block to that of the wedge.
3. A sphere of mass ‘m’ is at rest on a horizontal plane when it collides with a second sphere of mass 2m moving
on plane. Just before the instant of impact the path of the second sphere makes an angle α with the line of
centres of the sphere. The co-efficient of restitution between the spheres is ½. For a certain value of α second
sphere will be deflected maximum. Neglect friction between the spheres. Find the value of cot2 α in such
situation.
4. An insect jumps from ball A onto ball B, which are suspended from inextensible light strings
each of length L = 8 cm. The mass of each ball and insect is same. What should be the
minimum relative velocity (in m/s) of jump of insect w.r.t ball A, if both the balls manage to
complete the full circle?

8. Two masses m1 and m2 are connected by a light inextensible thread which passes over a
fixed cylinder. Friction coefficient between the thread and the cylinder is 𝜇. If the system
m2
is just in equilibrium, find the value of . (Take m2 m1 ).

9. A ball A is moving with KE = 4 J, on a smooth hrizontal plane. Another ball B ( mA 2mB ) collides with A
with striking speed v0 , then after collision the speed of A remains nchanged. If the ball B strikes with A with
striking speed 2v0 (direction same as earlier), then the KE of ball A becomes 16J.
If in the third case, the ball B collides with A with speed v0 (but direction reversed) then find
(a) KE of A after collision in third case
(b) KE of B beofre collision in third case.
(Assume that ball B comes to rest after collision in each case).
12. The system (block A and B) is initially at rest. At time t = 0, a particle of mass 1 kg
moving with speed 10 m/s strikes the block as shown and sticks to it. Then find the
time after which block B starts movig upwards.

(A) compression in the spring will be m (B) velocity of the wedge will be 5 m/s
2
(C) Acceleration of the wedge will be zero. (D) None of the above.
14. A ball of mass m projected horizontally from the top of a tower with speed u flies in air for a time interval 𝜏,
before it hits the horizontal ground. If force of air dray is proportional to the instantaneous speed
(proportionality constant = k), then find the horizontal range of the ball.

ASSIGNMENT 3 – PHYSICS CLASS XI - (PUA)
16. A ball B is released from B from the height of 20 m. A gun kept on a cliff, of
height 10 m fires a bullet horizontally with a speed of 100 m/s. At what time after
the start of the ball, should the bullet be fired to hit the falling ball? (Take g = 10
m/s2).
passage:
A ball bounces down stairs in a regular manner, hitting each step at the same plane
and bouncing the same height above each step. The height of the stair equals its
1
depth and coefficient of restitution for every collision is e . Assume floor to be
2
frictionless and acceleration due to gravity to be g vertically downwards.
