    NATURE OF DISASTER AND
    DISASTER RISK

    What do you need to know?

    Concept of hazard, disaster, and disaster risk

    Hazard - is a threat or harm that has the potential to


    cause damage to a person or community.

    Disaster - is any event that causes widespread human,


    economic, and environmental loses or impacts that seriously
    disrupt the normal functioning of a community. Pictures
    above (Module Jumpstart) are examples of disasters.

    Disaster risk – may be specified to a location or condition


    of a community. It determines the tendency of a
    community to face disasters.

    Example: the disaster risk of volcanic eruption for a community


    Living 1000 km away from the volcano is lower compared with
    that of a community that is living 100 km near the volcano.
    TYPES OF DISASTER
    Natural disasters Man-made disasters, also called
    technological disasters
    are devastated outcomes from
    natural hazards such as Earthquakes. Are destructions from man-made
    hazards such as bomb explosions.

    EFFECTS OF DISASTERS
    According to measurable severity, the effects of disasters are primary, secondary, and tertiary in nature.

    Primary effects are direct


    situations arising from the disaster
    itself. Example: There’s a typhoon, it can
    cause primary effect such as flooding
    and damage to property.

    Secondary effects are situations


    resulting from the primary
    effects
    Example: Disruption of electrical and
    water services because of the typhoon.

    Tertiary effects are those that are


    not experienced as a disaster is
    taking place but can be felt some Example: Lack of livelihood due to
    time after the disaster has occurred. destruction of farmland.
