Practise Work

The document describes a lesson where students made errors when reading proverbs and dialogues aloud. Possible reasons for the errors included fossilization and mislearning. During activities, students had pronunciation mistakes and built sentences grammatically incorrect when presenting answers. The document lists various error correction techniques a teacher could use, such as explicit correction, clarification requests, and recasts. An observation summary notes that immediate corrections were constantly used and that error correction can develop language learners' competence, but over-correcting risks losing student motivation and disrupting class flow.

Observation summary

What have you learnt from this observation?

During the observation I noticed that the teacher constantly used corrections in her sleep
which were immediate. So, I can say that error correction is a way to develop
competence of language learners in a second or foreign language. It can be used in order
to attain conscious knowledge of a second or foreign language, and in learning the
language’s rules. But sometimes teachers over-correct their students. The danger of over-
correcting is that students will lose motivation and you may even destroy the flow of the
class or the activity by butting in and correcting every single mistake.
