How Early People Used the Constellations?
A constellations were associated with religion, they also have practical uses. Before the calendars,
people had no way of determining when to sow or harvest except by looking these patterns in the
sky. Ancient people developed a way to remember the patterns by giving these patterns names and
stories. For example, in northern hemisphere, the constellation “Orion” indicates the coming of
COLD SEASON. The constellations made it easier for them to recognize and interpret patterns in
the sky. For example, Gemini is seen in the Philippines during the months of April and May.
Farmers interpreted the appearance of Gemini as the end of PLANTING SEASON and it signified
RICH HARVEST. The table on the text page shows how the “Matigsalug Manobo of Bukidnon”
used the stars and constellations in relation to their agriculture. Many ancient civilizations
interpreted the stars as deitis and observe the sky and stars with the identification of patterns to
predict the seasons of the year, as well as the best times for planting and harvesting, the study of the
stars made great advances possible for humanity. The first use for Constellations was probably
religious. People thought that the god’s lived in the heavens and that they created them. Many
cultures believed that the positions of the stars were their God’s way telling stories.
There are 88 types of constellations.
What are the 4 types of Constellation?

which points to Polaris, or the Northern Star.
Polaris has helped navigators for over 2000
years! If you’re facing Polaris, you are facing
North and if you can determine the angle of the
star from the horizon, you can determine the
latitude.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STARS
FOR HUMANS
THE STARS The reason why stars are so important is because they have
helped humans navigate through Earth . When it was dark these
stars would light up the sky giving people light . In addition stars
are very important because they make life on Earth. the most
important is the Sun, because without that it wouldn't be life on
Earth . Earth would just be a rock with ice.
Stars since ancient times are discribed as forever, hope,
destiny, heaven and freedom.
They have also for us people great importance and we believe
that falling stars make our wishes.
For example:
Ancient sailors used the stars to help guide them while they
were at sea. Just like Phoenicians looked to the sun’s
movement across the heaven to tell them their direction.

different benefits like:
The infrared light of the sun give us the warmth we need to • Important for the protection of the environment
live. • Prevents destruction of habitats
The exposition to sunlight ultraviolet radiations also help us to • Combats climate change
form vitamin-D in our bodies. This vitamin helps us to build • Social and economic benefits
teeths, bones and helps the body to absorb calcium.
THE POLE STAR
Star of Bethlehem
The Star of Bethlehem, or Christmas Star, appears only in the nativity
story of the Gospel of Matthew, where "wise men from the East" (Magi)
are inspired by the star to travel to Jerusalem.
Many Christians believe the star was a miraculous sign to mark the birth
of the Christ.
The first use for Constellations was probably religious. People thought
that the Gods lived in the heavens and that they created them. Many
cultures believed that the positions of the stars were their God's way of
telling stories. So it seemed natural to recognize patterns in the sky, give
them names, and tell stories about them.
As early as 5,000 years ago, some of
the first astronomers observed
changes in the sun and moon. They
noticed patterns in the sun's rising
and setting and in the shape and
position of the moon on any given
evening.
Humanity was not only inspired by
the beauty of the sky, but followed
the changes in the sky over the
ages and guided the sky for its
activities such as agriculture and
shipping. In addition to being
inspired by its poetic beauty, the
sky continues to serve as a guide to
mankind today.
People named the constellations.
Most of the names are still in use
today Stories are being told about
the heroes and the gods, the animals
and the mythological creatures
represented in the stars,
in order to preserve cultures and
instill moral values into the
tribesmen.
