(V) Data-based Questions (39 marks)

1 (a) Farmers in ancient Greece believed that Dionysus protected their
farming. Dionysus also taught them how to make wine. Thus, Dionysus
became one of the famers’ favourite gods.
(b) Yes. According to Source A, Greeks believed that Dionysus protected
their farming and they held annual ceremonies for Dionysus. This
reflected their respect to the gods. According to Source B, Greeks built
a great theatre to hold the ceremonies. Thus, religion played an
important role in Greek life.
(c) As reflected by the Theatre of Dionysus, Greek buildings were usually
supported by tall stone columns. They were also decorated with
sculptures.
(d) According to Source A, religious life of Greeks led to the development
of Greek plays. Greek tragedy originated from the ceremonies for
Dionysus. According to Source B, Greeks built many religious
buildings, such as the Theatre of Dionysus. In my own knowledge, the
the ancient Olympic Games were first held for religious purpose. In the
Olympic Games, sports events were held to honour Zeus.

2 (a) Tribunes.
(b) Tribunes listened to plebeians’ opinions and vetoed laws and
resolutions suggested by patricians that were unfair to the plebeians in
order to protect the interests of the plebeians.
(c) There was an increasing awareness among the plebeians on their
individual rights and interests. After the position of tribunes was set up,
the number of the position increased from two to ten in order to prevent
patricians from exploiting the interests of plebeians.
(d) According to Source A, the position of tribune was set up in the Roman
Republic. They could veto laws that were unfair to the plebeians in
order to prevent the domination of patricians. In my own knowledge,
later, the Roman Republic formed a government with two houses. The
Senate was the upper house, and its members were mainly patricians.
2016-JS1B-MPE-Set1-15
© LING KEE PUBLISHING CO., LTD.
The Assembly was the lower house, and its members were mostly
plebeians. Its members were elected by the plebeians. This kind of
political system enabled plebeians to affect the law-making process of
the country. Rights were more equally distributed.

3 (a) Manor.
(b) Nobles. A castle was usually built on top of a small hill. It had tall
walls, and was surrounded by a moat. A drawbridge over the moat was
the only way into the castle.
(c) Peasants. Most of them were serfs. They had no freedom. A lord gave
them land to farm. For two to three days a week, a serf had to work on
his lord’s fields. He had to provide service for his lord.
(d) With the growth of trade and towns, serfs’ lords wanted them to pay
money instead of crops. Thus, the serfs had to sell their crops in
exchange for money. Later, some of them used the money they had
saved to buy their freedom from their lords. A large number of them
were employed by townspeople. Manors’ economy, which relied on
farming by peasants, was then weakened.

(VI) Long Questions (15 marks)

1 Athens was a famous city-state in ancient Greece. There were people with
different identities in which it was not an equal society.

Firstly, only citizens could participate in political activities. Citizens were

free adult men born in the city-state. They had many rights and could vote
in elections. They could also make laws, become officials, and help rule
their city-state. Only citizens could own land.

Secondly, women had lower status compared to men. In Athens, the father
was the head of the family. Women had a lower status. They stayed at home
and looked after their children. They did not enjoy the rights of citizens.
Girls did not go to school.

Finally, at the bottom of Athenian society were slaves. Most of them were
prisoners of war or poor people who could not pay off their debts. Slaves
had no rights. They could be sold by their masters, and they worked until
they died.

Therefore, Athens was not an equal society.

2 Feudalism was a system of government under which a lord gave land and
protection to his vassals. In return, the vassals fought for their lord, paid
him taxes and be loyal to him.

A vassal could not sell his fief. The size of a fief varied and it could be a
small village, a manor or a large region. When the vassal died, he passed
his fief on to his eldest son. If he died without children, the king or the lord
might take it back.

Feudalism was a strict system. A feudal society was like a pyramid. The
king was at the top. Then, came the nobles. Peasants were at the bottom.
Besides nobles, the Christian Church was also given land. Under feudalism,
a noble could be both a lord and a vassal. To the lord above him, he was the
vassal. To the vassals below him, he became the lord. His fief was like an
independent kingdom.
