MUST READ: Critical Information for creating Adobe PDF files from PageMaker 7.0 for
Windows
Before you can export Adobe PDF files from Adobe PageMaker 7.0 software, you must change a default setting
in Acrobat® Distiller® 5.0. If you do not make this change, you may get an error message when exporting
Adobe PDF files that says: "When you create a PostScript file you have to send the host fonts. Please go to the
Acrobat Distiller printer properties, 'Adobe PDF Settings' page and turn OFF the option 'Do not send fonts to
Distiller'". When you click OK in the error message dialog box, you will see two additional error messages that
state "Saving the PostScript output failed." and "Could not print to the PostScript file". Click OK in both
messages and then follow the instructions below to set up PageMaker to export Adobe PDF files.
To export to Adobe PDF from PageMaker 7.0, please follow the operating system-specific instructions below.
Windows NT
You must be logged in as a user with administrative privileges to make the necessary changes. If you do not
have administrative privileges, contact your system administrator for assistance.
Go to Start > Settings > Printers. Right-mouse click on Acrobat Distiller in the Printers Control Panel and choose
Document Settings. Click the Adobe PDF Settings tab and uncheck "Do not send fonts to Distiller". Click OK. If
you have PageMaker open, you must close and re-open PageMaker in order for this change to take effect.
Windows 2000
Go to Start > Settings > Printers. Right-mouse click on Acrobat Distiller in the Printers Control Panel and select
the Printing Preferences button. Click the Adobe PDF Settings tab and uncheck "Do not send fonts to Distiller".
Click OK. If you have PageMaker open, you must close and re-open PageMaker in order for this change to
take effect.

This readme provides information about system requirements, procedures on installing Adobe® PageMaker®
7.0 software and upgrading from previous versions, and some tips on improving efficiency and performance
when using PageMaker.
System requirements
Below are the requirements and recommendations for systems on which you intend to run Adobe PageMaker.
Requirements are the basic suggested system components necessary to install and run PageMaker;
recommendations are the optimum suggested system components.
Windows
· Intel® Pentium® II processor or later
· Microsoft Windows® 98SE, Windows NT® with Service Pack 5 or 6, Windows 2000, or Windows Millennium
Edition
· 32 MB of RAM installed (48 MB of RAM or more recommended)
· 175 MB of available hard-disk space required for installation; 200 MB or more recommended
Note: If you have a partitioned hard drive and you're installing to a different drive from where Windows system
files appear, the drive containing Windows system files must have at least 24 MB of hard-disk space available.
· Video card with 800 x 600 resolution and 8- bit/256 colors (24-bit, high-resolution display recommended.
· CD-ROM drive
· For Adobe PostScript® printers: Adobe PostScript Level 2 or later
If you are upgrading from a previous version of PageMaker, the installer creates a new folder for the PageMaker
7.0 files. Your current PageMaker files are not affected. See "Upgrading from previous versions of PageMaker".
Note: After you install PageMaker, remember that you can install additional products from the PageMaker
Application CD. Adobe Acrobat® Distiller® and AdobePS® are required for exporting PageMaker publications to
PDF. For more information, see "Installing additional applications".
PageMaker 7.0 includes only the following PPD files: General, Color General, and Acrobat Distiller. The best
way to ensure that your PPD files are up-to-date is to obtain PPD files from your printer manufacturer. However,
you can also use PPD files from previous versions of PageMaker. You must copy the PPD files from the
previous version's folder to the following PageMaker 7.0 location:
Installing fonts
PageMaker includes a number of fonts that you can add to your system. These fonts are located in two folders:
Template Fonts and Extra Fonts. (Extra fonts are not included in the Educational version of PageMaker.)
Template fonts are used in the professionally designed templates included in PageMaker.
These font folders and fonts are copied automatically to the following location:
Use ATM, ATM Lite, or a different font manager to install the fonts on your system. For more information, see
the ATM or system documentation.
Although these new libraries include many enhancements, they may create printing workflow problems such as
unwanted spot colors in the Colors palette, distinct shifts in color separations, and undesired color changes
when printing. However, you can replace the existing PANTONE color libraries with the revised version. For
more information, see the PANTONE_Readme.pdf file in the following location:
To open PageMaker 4.0-6.5x publications, use either the File > Open command (to open one file at a time) or
the Utilities > Plug-ins > Publication Converter command (to locate and open all or some of the PageMaker 4.0-
6.5 publications on your system). With File > Open, PageMaker 4.0- 6.5 files are converted into untitled
PageMaker 7.0 publications, and the original publications are preserved. With Utilities > Plug-ins > Publication
Converter, you have the option of replacing the earlier files with the converted versions in order to save disk
space.
In PageMaker 7.0, you can use File> Open to open a publication from a different platform if the file is saved in
PageMaker 6.5 or 7.0 format. To open a PageMaker 5.0 or 6.0 for MacOS in PageMaker 7.0 for Windows, use
the Cross- Platform PageMaker Converter.

Improving performance
Speed and performance are greatly influenced by the amount of available memory, the system configuration,
how the PageMaker program was first installed, and the way in which your system uses available RAM. The
following sections provide tips for improving performance and working more efficiently in PageMaker.
Memory size
PageMaker stores temporary files on your hard disk during a work session, so it is important to have plenty of
space available on your hard disk while working with PageMaker. In addition, for virtual memory purposes for
Windows, we recommend you have at least 50 MB of free disk space on your hard disk.
Printing efficiently
Use the correct PPD for your PostScript output device. Items in the PPD that can affect print performance
include the amount of virtual memory (VM) available, permanently installed fonts, and color capability. If
PageMaker has correct information about these attributes, it can send PostScript to the printer more efficiently.
For more information, see "Transferring PPD files".
If color fidelity is not critical when printing proofs, disable color management to improve printing performance.
If printing to a non PostScript printer, check with your printer manufacturer to ensure that you are using the
latest version of the printer driver for your device.
Use the Application CD to install ATM Lite 4.1 for Windows. ATM is not available for Windows 2000.
If left selected, this option causes a significant drop in performance. For optimal performance, select this option
only when you save a PageMaker file for another computer, and deselect it immediately after.
Setting save options to smaller
In the PageMaker Preferences dialog box (File > Preferences > General), click Smaller to have PageMaker
save your publication using the least amount of file space. With this option selected, PageMaker creates a new,
compact version of your publication each time you save. Saving a publication takes longer and uses more RAM,
but large publications are reduced considerably in size, which improves performance.
