Task 1 CHCCOM005
What are the Australian Privacy Principles and what do they cover?
The Australian Privacy Principles (Privacy Act 1988)
➢ In my understanding, the Australian Privacy Principles (Privacy Act 1988) is a set of standards
that emphasise the importance of clients' personal information security.
➢ The community service provider I’m currently working part-time is an example of an ‘entity’ required
for this Act. It must have at least a $3million annual return to operate.
➢ Although all of the 13 principles play significant roles in data privacy, I found 4 interesting
principles, that in my perspective, these APPs are essential to any type of agency or
organisation. ● Firstly, APP 1 Open and transparent management of personal information.
○ It is about the importance of a comprehensive and up-to-date Privacy Policy in each
organization.
○ This APP privacy must be visible to the clients, preferably publicly displayed on
their website.
● Secondly, APP 5 Notification of the collection of personal information.
○ The organizations must inform/notify their clients when they collect information, for
instance, the collection of contact details, the purpose of collection, the risk if the
personal information is not collected, info about the organization’s Privacy Policy, and
so on.
● Thirdly, APP 11 Security of personal information.
○ I believe that an organisation must have an advanced approach in protecting the
personal information of their clients, otherwise, it will compromise the safety of clients
and the entire organisation.
● Lastly, APP 12 Access to personal information.
○ This type of APP tells us the importance of how individuals can get access or
request access to their own personal information
○ An organisation must tell why they have to refuse access.
➢ To conclude, the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) signifies transparency of both client
and organisation, security of personal information shared, and abidance to the law.

➔ If the treatment needed of the client is not part of my scope, I am ‘allowed’ to use

primary purpose of clients’ safety and health and it should be within the client's
“reasonable expectations”. In other words, the client is duly informed
about when/where/who the organisation shares information.
➔ I should also be able to identify the primary purpose and secondary purpose of
the clients’ information.

QUESTION 4
a) What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Who uses this?
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
● The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was authored by officials coming from all regions of
the world, in which most of us are using and enjoying these rights.
● It was publicised by United Nations General Assembly to promote human privilege to education,
access to information concerning the country's economic growth, medicine, social and cultural
rights, justice, and many more.
● The is used by everyone. No specific age, gender, culture, etc requirements in order to
access Human Rights.
● In relation to my future workplace, for example, if I’ll work in an Aged Care organisation, I must
keep in mind that regardless of my client's age, they have the right to “Life”, the right to get
support, right to get medical treatment.
● In addition, I must remember that in my workplace, I have the freedom to speak, the right to get
treated fairly, the right to refuse a given task if it compromises my safety. And that all of my rights
at work would also apply to the entire organisation.
● In my point of view, the primary needs to survive would be food, water, shelter, and clothing. ● Other basic
needs would be access to education, protection, peace, a healthy environment, and medicine. ● As a
community service student and worker, I must provide my clients the best of my service as that is part of
their Rights.
● That even if my client has a disability, I must show them respect and should be treated equally. And that
all my clients have the right to confidentiality and I should not disclose information unless authorised.
● “Human Rights” is an interpretaion of “entitlement” in the matter of access to fairness, social security,
justice, belongingness, and all other types of Human Rights strengthen the right to ‘Life’. ● As a foreign
national, who enjoys the privilege to study outside my home country, and being granted entry by the
Australian government is just an example of my definition of “Human Rights”. It is an understatement to say
I am fortunate. It's way more than lucky. As we are all aware that even if there are Human Rights standards
that are applied to each country, not everyone gets to choose what they want.

QUESTION 5
Bridgette, a registered nurse, is being harassed by a male senior staff member, Alex. He constantly mocks her
because she is overweight. Bridget works with Alex on a daily basis and he constantly make jokes and
comments about the quality of her work. He also mocks her when she has to do any physical tasks – saying
she will probably have a heart attack because she is so fat. When an opportunity to take on a project comes up
Alex tells Bridgette that she should not attempt to apply for it because she wouldn’t be fit enough to do the job.
● This case tells me that I must be careful in making jokes to someone, particularly at work since there’s a
legal procedure done that would badly impact my professional relationship and career advancement.
b) Describe an effective complaints management process that Bridgette could follow if she wanted to
formally lodge a complaint. (Provide a step-by-step process.)
I. From my point of view, Bridgette must consider planning carefully prior to lodging a complaint,
otherwise, it might cause a serious effect on her career.
II. She must try to remember how many times she was being ‘harassed’ by Alex. Has she tried to
talk and ask Alex to stop?
III. If so, she must take the first step in reporting the harassment to her direct Team Lead through
writing a formal complaint letter or setting an appointment for a one-on-one talk.
IV. The Team Lead must acknowledge, record, and assess carefully the complaint of Bridgette. V. The
Team Leader may consider talking to Alex to know his side, then let Bridgette and Alex talk. This is
also the step where a Team leader would attempt to execute an ‘early resolution’ to avoid escalation.
VI. If Bridgette is not happy with the result, she can file a formal complaint about discrimination and/or
harassment
VII. Alex must be informed about the formal complaint.
VIII. If the result of the complaint proves Alex at fault, he will be advised to disciplinary counseling,
written warning, etc
IX. Bridgette on the other hand might be granted a leave, supportive counseling, etc
X. If the result of the complaint did not favor Bridgette, the company may provide a refresher in
regard to discrimination and/or harassment.

QUESTION 6
b) Name two codes of practice that a health and community services worker would work under.
Code 1: ● manual handling
○ In my understanding, manual handling is a tool that should be in the best
interest of all health and community services workers as it tells on how to
decrease the chance of having Musculoskeletal disorders (MDS’s)
○ This is also a tool that we need to comprehend in terms of proper handling
of clients like push, pull, restrain any person, animal or thing.

Conflict of interest For example, if I do not adhere to the mission and vision of the
organization, my co-worker will
then question the significance of
promoting a healthy and safe
workplace, therefore there will be a
potential conflict of interest.
This guideline must be kept in mind and this tells us that I should always consider others before doing
something that would violate the policies
Failure to follow would affect the
entire organisation, in a way that
results in the risk of reputation of the
workplace.

QUESTION 9
Jessie works in a Home and Community Care environment. One of Jessie’s elderly clients lives at home with
her daughter and granddaughter. Lately you have been concerned that the granddaughter has bruises on her
arms and face. Her bruising patterns lead Jessie to suspect the child is being abused. The mother always
seems to avoid you and the grandmother says the child keeps falling off her bike. When you talk to the child
she does not answer. The child is not your client.
a) Does Jessie have a duty of care to report this suspected abuse? Why/why not?
Yes, as part of the community services and in accordance with the Mandatory reporting legislation of child
abuse and neglect, Jessie is required and is obliged to report the child to the authority
b) List five other indicators that might suggest that a child is being abused physically or psychologically.
● Bedwetting
● Low self-esteem
● Dressed differently from other children in the family
● Prolonged vomiting
● Severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, withdrawal or aggression
QUESTION 10
Harry is working in Home and Community Care. One of the clients, Arnold has taken a liking to Harry as he
reminds him of his son. He often gives Harry small presents and has now offered to pay for a season ticket to
the football (they both follow the same team).

QUESTION 11
Joan and John are having a conversation about a client:
Joan: I have given Mr Fisher his meds. I helped him take them as he sometimes forgets if we just leave them
with him. Can you look in on him in the next half hour as he needs his bandaging done?
John: Oh yes – I agree that we should be assisting him to take his meds as you are right – he’s getting a bit
forgetful. Yes I will do Mr Fisher’s bandages straightaway.
a) Which model of communication are Joan and John using? (Tick the correct answer)
● Linear
● Interactive
● Transactional
c) Does John use an affirming statement in his response? If so, what does he say?
Yes, John was able to convey an affirmation response. There was a verbal agreement coming from John after
saying “--as you are right”.
d) How does John summarise Joan’s communication to show that he has understood?
● John clearly understood Joan’s statement since he did not ask “clarification” questions
● John was also able to respond immediately and accurately without hesitation.
19
QUESTION 12
In a paragraph, explain what Joan could say to Mr Fisher to motivate him to use the walking frame.
Joan may start the conversation by asking a few questions like, how was doing day like? Was there anything
that concerns him while he is in the facility? And is he comfortable going around the facility while using the
‘walking stick’. She can then add about her concern with his safety while she was observing him a few hours
ago and that he seems unsteady while walking. She may then suggest that Mr. Fisher might want to consider
switching from using the stick to a walking frame, as it might help him prevent any untoward accident like
falling over. Joan should describe in a comprehensive manner what are the benefits he can get, its
functionality, and she may talk about the experience of other clients who prefer using the walking frame since it
helps them with their balance while standing and walking. Also, she should not forget to tell him about its
downside like he may need just a little time to get used to it while assuring him that she is there to guide him.
QUESTION 14
Mr Fisher’s daughter, Matilda charges up to Joan. ‘Why isn’t my father being looked after properly? You let
him fall over – he could have been badly injured. I’ve a good mind to take him out of this facility!’
How could Matilda have used a more collaborative approach? How would this have been an advantage to her father?
The collaborative approach is significant in medical decision-making. If there was a collaborative relationship
established between the client, his family, and the organization prior to offering services, it would have been
easy to determine the specific needs of the client, especially preventing accidents like what happened to Mr.
Fisher.
In this case, It would have been better if Matilda brought up her complaint directly to the supervisor. instead
of agitating Joan. That way she will know what causes her father from falling over. She can then speak out
what exactly her father needs and in return, the facility could also make suggestions to make sure that the
incident won’t happen again.

QUESTION 16
Giuseppe is a 70 year old man. Today he is looking very uncomfortable. You notice that he is fidgety and keeps
getting up to use the toilet. He must have gone 10 times in the last 30 minutes. When you ask him if he is okay,
he says, ‘Yes I’m fine’.
It turns out that Giuseppe has an enlarged prostrate and is not able to urinate properly.
a) Why do you think that Giuseppe said he was “fine” when he clearly wasn’t?
● Maybe, Giuseppe is not comfortable telling his situation with a lady worker.
● It must not be allowed in their beliefs, religion, and/or culture.
● Giuseppe might have a dilemma from previous experience relating to the current situation
A friend comes to visit Giuseppe. She comes to you after the visit and says ‘What’s wrong with Giuseppe?

AASW focused on promoting the significance of social workers to society and healthcare services. Their goals are
to provide support to social workers to improve practice and ethical standards, and to continue the development of
social work knowledge, research, professional and education standards (benchmark).
b) Explain how this service interacts with at least two other services.
AASW Australian Association of Social Workers
After careful research, I found a few organizations' that AASW partnered with, such as the International
FederationSocial Workers, and the Climate and Health Alliance.
While AASW is deemed to uplift Social Workers’ importance in the country, they also partner with organizations'

QUESTION 18
Describe two ways in which each of the following digital media could be used effectively in a health and community
services environment.
Digital media Two examples of use
Website 1.
To effectively promote the mission and vision of an organization, they
can display everything on their website. This would also be an easy way
for the prospect client to know more about them, like their location,
about their services, partners, feedback from clients, etc.
2.
A website is also a tool to show transparency. If we apply the Australian
Privacy Principle number 1, the Website is their recommended tool where
an organization can ‘display’ the Privacy Policy.
Email 1.
Email can be used to promote the organization’s business in terms of
marketing, updates about policies and can also be controlled by the
organization’s IT Networking team in regard to making sure all Data
coming and out follows confidentiality.
2.
They could also use this to communicate in a more professional way.
Email can be more secure in terms of sending/requesting personal
copies of Data, provided that all workers are careful with security access,
email.
Social media 1.
Social Media platforms are an effective way to promote business,
interact through live chats with clients. Can also be useful in terms of
sharing awareness.
26
Digital media Two examples of use
2.
This platform is now used for current events, news, - in other words this
tool can help health and community services to interact with people
virtually.
People in the health and community services can use these tools either
forpersonal or sharing awareness.
2.
Both can be easily accessed while you are connected to the internet, at
the same time you can download your favorite Podcast or Online videos
offline which make it convenient as it allows you to listen to them over
and over.
2.
Another way to utilize these tools is through sharing access from one
department to another, from one office to another, and so on. Like you can
send tons and tons of Data to another office without carrying them
physically, you just have to share-network or send it through email.
27
Digital media Two examples of use
Newsletters 1.
Since more people prefer to read online, Newsletters are a great way to
connect with clients especially by sharing updates about the community
or sharing about the progress of the business, and services they can get if
they sign up with the organization.
2.
And since the Newsletter is designed online, it is more appealing to read.
As aresult, clients can easily read it using their mobile phones, tablets, or
computers.
Intranet 1.
Intranet is best in communicating between organizations to another since
this software was built more secure especially in sending files of client’s
personal information. This software can be designed for a specific group or
organization.
2.
This tool is also effective in seeking advice or consultation from one expert
to another expert healthcare professional.

QUESTION 19
c) There’s no question found on this item. Our instructor, Sabina, also noticed this during our online class.
QUESTION 20
A client discloses to you in confidence that they are considering harming another person. Are you obliged to keep this
matter to yourself due to confidentiality requirements? Why or why not?
● In this scenario, I am definitely not forbidden to follow the Privacy Act, for the reason that the client
is already showing an indirect threat to someone.
● However, since it is an “indirect” threat, I will not consider reporting the client to the authority, not unless
this client has a case history of attacking someone physically. Otherwise, I will just talk to the client
calmly and try to divert our conversation to something else.
