I know there has been some concerning media attention recently surrounding many of the issues our
university has faced over the past year. It’s disappointing because some of the more recent news doesn’t
accurately portray all of the outstanding things happening each day at our great university. I want to use
this opportunity to address some concerns, provide an update on our ongoing investigations and ensure
the campus community knows it has my and my leadership team’s full attention.
We have engaged two different firms to look into the issues surrounding our men’s basketball team. The
Rodey Law Firm is looking into the events that took place in Albuquerque last November, and we will
share their findings once their report is finished in the next two weeks. A separate firm, Greenberg
Traurig, is looking into the allegations of hazing that took place on the team. Their work is underway now
and running in parallel to our own internal investigation into this matter.
As I have repeatedly said, the most important job I have as chancellor of the NMSU System is to ensure
our students are safe and protected from harm. That also extends to our university employees, and in
every instance when we have encountered an issue that would cause harm to our community members, we
have dealt with it, head-on.
Despite any assertions to the contrary, when university personnel are found to have committed
wrongdoing, they are held accountable – up to and including being terminated for their actions. To help
with investigating allegations, we’ve added staff to our Office of Institutional Equity and temporarily
provided additional support personnel from other offices when they were needed. Furthermore,
whistleblowers receive a tremendous amount of protection under New Mexico law. And, under NMSU’s
Administrative Rules and Procedures, retaliation is explicitly prohibited.
Last May, my family and I went through a deeply personal situation. Importantly, there is no truth to the
allegations made that evening. It was a low point for me, and since that time, my wife and I have worked
to rebuild our relationship. I am confident this matter has not impacted my ability to lead our university.
To the extent it has brought negative publicity to my alma mater, I deeply regret that. I continue to ask the
community to grant my family privacy in this matter.
What’s most disheartening – this dialogue distracts from the important work we are doing each day in
support of our students and the communities we serve. We are the state’s land-grant institution and our
dedicated and talented employees have devoted themselves to our mission of education, research and
creativity, and extension and outreach. They are doing incredible, life-changing work and their efforts
deserve better than to be overshadowed. We’re also continuing our work to ensure our Aggie basketball
program can be put back on track. This university is moving forward, and we are doing so together.
Thank you, everyone, for your efforts on this front.
