Use of your personal bike for commuting to and from work is not considered work-related, and
therefore these policies do not apply. [4] However, staff members are strongly encouraged to wear
a helmet and practice good safety habits whenever they ride.
Cathy 5:30
Hey, I noticed you’ve started biking to the office. How long does it take?
Yeong-Joo 5:33
About 20 min. It’s quicker than driving when traffic’s bad, which is almost always.
Cathy 5:34
I’ve been thinking about trying that, since I sold my car and the buses are so slow.
Yeong-Joo 5:35
You really should! The university encourages it but is strict in some ways. When biking at night
for work purposes, you have to use lights. And you always have to wear a helmet. I know you
usually don’t.
Cathy 5:38
That’s really a rule, even just for going to and from the office? I don’t even have a helmet.
Yeong-Joo 5:40
Yes, it’s the policy. But the department will buy one for you if you need one.

KTMA, the number-one local TV station in this region, has created a “Get to Know Your
Neighbors” feature. We are looking for people with interesting life stories for a short television
interview during our Sunday morning news broadcast. This ten-minute feature is intended to
share interesting stories from ordinary people’s lives. As an example, for our last episode we
interviewed a woman who can speak six different languages.
Although we unfortunately cannot provide payment, this kind of positive exposure on a major
TV channel could be very helpful for your career. Hundreds of thousands of people watch our
broadcast every week!
Please send us a short introduction about yourself, your résumé, and an explanation of why
you feel your life story is interesting. We hope to find somebody who is free this Friday as the
production deadline is very soon. We will respond to every serious enquiry.
Dear Producer,
I am interested in being interviewed, and I hope you consider my story suitable. I have attached
a copy of my curriculum vitae and a cover letter that gives my background in detail.
When I was 18 years old, I sailed around the world by myself. At the time I was one of the
youngest people in the world to ever attempt the journey. In fact, the book I have written about
my experiences will be published soon. I’m sure your interview would provide some good
publicity for the book.
I am a full-time employee, but I can make arrangements with my boss about meeting with you at
your convenience.
Kind regards,
Lucas Hayes

designated area where a buffet lunch can be served.
• The Lily Room is the largest room in the hotel and can accommodate up to 75 attendees. The
space also features a nice view of the hotel gardens.
• The Marigold Room is a cosy space recommended for small groups. The space is appropriate
for up to 10 guests.
• The Blossom Room is usually reserved for wedding ceremonies, but special arrangements can
be made based on availability.
Please contact our business manager, Margaret Gilbert, at services@palacehotel.com with your
enquiries.
I would like to thank you for your assistance with our conference room booking. The meeting
went well. The attendees were very pleased with the facilities, and we all particularly enjoyed the
large number of choices in the buffet. My supervisor and I wanted to impress these suppliers
because we are currently negotiating a major agreement with them. We plan to arrange our next
meeting with them at your hotel also.
One question: are the directions that you sent me correct? We distributed the map that you
provided, but a few of the attendees found the directions difficult to follow.

March 12 — A record number of people have visited the Newton Convention Center, where the
annual Wedding Fair is currently being held. According to the event’s organizers, half a million
people have passed through the gates since the fair started a week ago.
Future brides and grooms flock to the two-week event, which brings together top industry
professionals. These include wedding planners, photographers, tailors, makeup artists, decorators,
and more. One of the fair’s most popular features is the free cake samples provided by local
bakeries.
“We’re amazed by the public’s enthusiasm,” says Elaine Vest, a fair organizer. “One boutique
bakery has already received cake orders for fifteen wedding ceremonies. With so many businesses
exhibiting their products and services here, couples are able to organize their whole wedding.”
The Wedding Fair will continue until March 19. Tickets are available through the website by
accessing www.newtonweddingfair.com, by visiting the event entrance, or by calling Vibrant Tickets
at 538-1920. Tickets that are purchased online have a 5% discount.

I created the account at a local bank branch when I was living in the US, but I stopped using it
since coming back home. However, my company is planning to send me back in March for a
long-term project. The account will be useful to me in the near future, so today I deposited some
money using the online banking system.
Please let me know if I need to do anything else. I also updated my contact details today
because I would rather be contacted via e-mail.
Kind regards,
