Our issue is that the citizens especially in the urban areas should lessen the use of automotive vehicle as

our everyday transportation in order to help in reducing the air pollution because air pollution is one of
the greatest problem our country is facing today which is causing grave and irreparable damage to the
natural world and human society and the biggest contributor of air pollution is vehicle emission.
Urban areas such as cities are the most crowded places. Air pollution has been a great problem not just
in our country but also all over the globe. Most of air pollution is caused by vehicle emission. The world
has millions of vehicles being used and these vehicles releases gases that are known as pollutant. Air
pollution is the mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Air pollution occurs when the natural state
of air changes. These gases in the air are called pollutants. There are two major pollutants: Fine
Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), both which cause air pollution in the Philippines.
The most recent data indicates the country’s annual concentration of PM2.5 is 18 µg/m³ it may be
smaller from the past but it still exceeds the recommended maximum of 10 µg/m³. The WHO studied
that for every 100,000 people’s death 45.3% are air pollution-related deaths. Before lockdown begins
Philippines were ranked as 57th out of 97 in the most polluted countries. Contributors to poor air
quality in the Philippines include the smoke from factories, vehicle emissions, waste burning, and some
other human activities. Most human activities that contribute in the air pollution are mining, industrial
works, use of transportation vehicle and burning waste. There are 4,711,103 registered vehicles in the
Philippines since 2019, all of which somewhat responsible for air pollution as vehicles exhaust both fine
particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. Vehicles uses diesels as fuel that can produce those contributors
of air pollution. Jeepneys are buses and the most popular means of public transportation ubiquitous in
the Philippines. They are usually front-engine and rear-wheel drive, most often using diesel as its type of
fuel. Many jeepneys are now very old and are often very unsafe and as such produce a lot of pollution.
The same as jeepneys buses and private vehicle also produce lots of pollution especially those vehicle
that doesn’t have regular care. Common causes of pollution due to vehicle use are traffic congestion and
vehicle population. Due to lot of vehicle population traffic happens, when there is traffic the amount of
gases released by vehicles doubled because some leave there engines on while their car is standing by
and not moving. Also the technical issues with gasoline engines, gasoline itself and combustion can
cause vehicle to contribute air pollution. Air pollution has negative impacts to the environment and the
organisms living there. Air pollution can cause respiratory and health problems, if you are being exposed
to air with lots of poisonous chemical it can affect not just your respiratory system but also to other
systems in your body. Smog due to polluted air can reduce visibility that can cause accidents to people
especially drivers. Air pollution can also results to depletion of Earth’s Ozone Layer due to the increase of
greenhouse gases and acid rain that can danger animal wildlife and us humans. Also acid rain can
damage leaves of the plants and increase the acidity of soil and water.
Claim 1: During the Toyota Hybrid Electric Technology conference at the Grand Hyatt Manila, Trade
Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba said that 69% of air pollution in the Philippines comes from vehicles
such as private cars and motorcycles, buses and other automobiles used by the people. It clearly states
that vehicles are the one who most contribute in air pollution, so in order to lessen the pollution in the
air we should lessen our use in those vehicles. We are utterly reliant on fossil fuels and the number of
automobiles on the road rise. We can only try to minimize automotive emissions by doing some ways,
and one of the easiest ways to do so is drive less and instead of always using vehicles even if their
destination is near we can always just walk or ride a bike, these just can help your body became healthy
but also can lessen the contribution of air pollution. If ever your destination is quiet far you can just ride
a public transportation such as trains so you could lessen the use automobiles which means the lesser
the automobiles being used the lesser the pollutants being produced and also can lessen the traffic.
Claim 2: One of the reason why urban areas should lessen the use of automobiles is because more than
90% of Philippine vehicle emissions come from Metro Manila and other urban areas every day. Due to
the higher number of population and more active economy in the urban areas the usage of automobiles
increases every day. Because of the higher no. of population in these areas, this can give a big chance to
have traffic in the street of these cities and traffic can contribute more and more of pollution in every
passing second. Urban areas contribute more to pollution not just in the air but also to other elements.
One way to help lessen it is using zero-emission vehicles, these vehicles doesn’t use fossil fuels for
locomotion. An example of these vehicles is an electric vehicle which move away from burning fuel and
use electrochemical processes to produce energy required for the vehicle to move. The by-product of
fuel-cell vehicle is water and that is why these types of cars are known as zero-emission vehicles.
Another vehicle is bicycle that we can use as our transportation. According to the recent Metro Manila
bike count it is estimated that 4.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide will be avoided if approximately 39,000
people will use bicycle instead of cars. These clearly shows the big impact of less use of vehicle that use
fossil fuels to move.
Opposing parties might say that the minimizing of automobiles in streets might slow down our
economy. Some might say that it can be waste of time if they use public transportation and not use their
own vehicle. While there are some disadvantages of minimizing automobile uses, the benefits still
outweigh than those disadvantages. Minimizing the usage of automobiles being used can minimize the
vehicle emission and can help reduce air pollution. Not just that it can also help lessen the traffic and
street accidents especially in city streets.

Thesis Statement: The usage of automobiles as our everyday transportation should be lessen especially
in urban areas to minimize and stop pollution.
