Topic / Title AROMATIC COMPOUNDS

Grade Level Grade 9 –Consumer Chemistry

Time Allotment 120 minutes
Date October 28, 2020
Most Essential Learning Competency
Describe the IUPAC nomenclature classification of organic compounds (functional groups, aliphatic and
aromatic compounds).
Learning Competencies and Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Familiarize the steps in naming aromatic compounds using IUPAC system;
2. Name some aromatic compounds given their structures;
3. Draw the structure of some aromatic compounds given their names; and
4. Appreciate the importance of aromatic hydrocarbons in our daily life.

ELICIT 10 minutes

Recall the previous lesson by showing the structure of an acetylene that is also PowerPoint Presentation
found on page 6 of the module. Then, they will be asked to answer the following guide on the structure of
questions using the LS: Profile. acetylene and 3-ethyl-
1. What kind of aliphatic compound is acetylene? 5,7-dimetyl-1-heptyne
2. What is the IUPAC name of acetylene?
3. What were the steps you follow in giving the IUPAC name of acetylene?
Present another structure but this time, substituents are present on the structure and
ask the students one by one to give the IUPAC name of the structure presented.

ENGAGE 10 minutes

Do you want to know the structure of aromatic compounds? If you are interested just PowerPoint Presentation
follow my instructions correctly. Are you ready? Let us begin. showing the instructions
and guide questions

Draw a hexagon.

For the first aromatic structure,

repeat direction 1 and draw a
circle at the center.
.

For the second aromatic

structure, repeat direction 1 and
inside the hexagon, draw three
alternating lines opposite to the
original structure.

Then, it will be followed by the following questions:
1. In how many ways can you show the structure of aromatic compounds?
2. Describe the first structure for aromatic compounds. How about the second structure?
3. What do you call the structure of aromatic compounds?

At this point, you are now starting to learn about aromatic compounds. To discover and PowerPoint Presentation
learn more about this lesson, discussion on the following will be given to the students: on the contents of What
1. definition, characteristics and structures of aromatic compounds. Is It part of the module
2. difference between aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
3. stability of electrons in aromatic compounds.
4. symbols used for IUPAC Nomenclature of aromatic compounds.
5. steps in naming aromatic compounds that contains the following:
a. aromatic compounds with single substituent
b. aromatic compounds with two substituents
c. aromatic compounds with multiple substituents
6. examples of aromatic compounds and their uses

blast fishing also known as dynamite fishing. It is an illegal practice of killing aquatic marine on the given paragraph
life especially the fishes. It has been a practice not just in the Philippines but also in other and questions
countries. Although dynamite fishing has declined in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the country’s
fisheries bureau estimated that there are still about 10,000 incidents per day. This practice
is very dangerous because it uses explosives in killing the fishes that result not only to
coral reef destruction but also to extinction of marine life. One of the substances being
used as explosive is an aromatic compound which is TNT. It has three nitro groups located
at 2,4,6 carbon atoms respectively and one methyl group
Guide Questions:
1. Based on the given data, draw the structure of TNT.
2. What is the IUPAC Name of TNT?
3. Were you able to witness dynamite fishing in your locality? Give at least 3 ways on how
to stop dynamite fishing?
