ABSTRACT

A couple of years ago, Dhaka had many swamps, channels, and khals, which function as the primary drainage system for the entire city and convey the water towards the fringe
streams. Three rivers encompassed Dhaka city. The Buriganga river lies on the south side of Dhaka city, the Balu river is on the east side, and the Turag river is on the northwest. As a
result, Dhaka city got its water network of natural canals that served as an evacuation of the rain runoff.

Dhaka city grew in every direction over the past few years. Consequently, the landscape of Dhaka city is changing in an unplanned way, which causes a lot of problems. In recent years
water logging is identified as a major problem of this city (Strategic Environment Assessment of Dhaka). The normal yearly precipitation is 1,854 mm (73.0 in). Precipitation is
expanding at a pace of 55.90 mm/year. So, the water logging issue can become more regrettable. This study aims to build up an essential cycle to reclaim a covered stream as an
answer for present waterlogging for a space of Dhaka metropolitan city.

Historically, Dhaka was interwoven with the system of rivers, canals, lakes, and ponds. The natural canals served as the drainage system of the city during rainy days, and also, these
canals were used for transportation along with railway and road. The study tracked down that the western part of Dhaka had 13 khals, and the eastern part of Dhaka had 27 khals.
Among those, 17 canals only exist in the map. The majority of the enduring channels have been diminished to shallow floods of soiled sewer water and filled with dumping waste or
encroached by illegal.

The study area is located nearly at the focal point of the western piece of Dhaka. It is recognized as Panthapath road. The total length of Panthapath street is roughly 1.7km. There
was a canal until 1990 which was connected to two lakes, Dhanmondi lake, and Hatirjheel. In 1995 the construction of the box culvert was completed to convert it into a vehicular
road. It is now the secondary road connecting two major roads; one is Mirpur Street on the west side, and another is Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue on the east side. Another secondary
street called Green Road goes across the Panthapath street in about region from north to south.
For this unplanned and rapid development of panthopath, we are facing so many problems. If we talk about the Panthopath and the Green Road node, then the first thing that clicks
in our mind is the traffic jam. It is a great problem, and it kills our valuable time. Besides that, noise pollution is one of the major problems in this area encountered in daily life and
has direct effects on human performance. This alarming increase in the volume of traffic is actually inversely related to the degradation of the environment. If we notice the study
area of us, we will see that the two secondary roads (panthopath and green road) divided the area into four quadrants which causes the loss of the pedestrian connection. And also,
there is 8% of green space existing in the panthopath site. There is no place where people can gather. And the urban space is totally missing in this site.

So, the purpose of our project is to solve the problems. We proposed a waterway by reviving the water canal, which is now converted into the box culvert. By restoring this canal, we
can use it for transportation besides the vehicular road. Different types of conditions are provided here. Where other vehicular and pedestrian streets lost their connection, bridges
are provided for vehicular and pedestrian access. The bridges are placed specially near other local roads, where they lost their connection due to the placement of the waterway.
Bridges will add the pedestrian connection from one side of the road to the other side. So, pedestrian connectivity will increase throughout the area. The bridges are designed for
universally accessible. We come up with an overpass to avoid the disturbance of the vehicular route of the north and the south side of the Pathopath, which is provided on the
Pathopath and the Green Road node. The embankment edge with the railing portion and green belt beside the sidewalk is provided for safety purposes. The big trees are placed here
to provide shade for shoppers and visitors. We also provided the trees for decreasing sound pollution.

There is a slope condition at the embankment portion. It is up to an engineering solution to define the design detail for the embankment. We introduced slope at embankment
portion rather than having a vertical wall gives a more natural look. Bioswales are provided here to concentrate and convey stormwater runoff while removing debris and pollution.
Bioswales can also be beneficial in recharging groundwater. Rain gardens are provided in the urban spaces to temporarily hold and soak in rainwater runoff that flows from roofs,
driveways, patios, or lawns. Rain gardens effectively remove up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from the rainwater runoff.
