Figure: Q1(a)
Mass 2500kg, Length L:= 4 m, I=0.00005m4 Youngs Modulus E=200 kN⋅ mm−2
(b) Consider a two story Portal Frame as shown in Figure Q1(b) with fixed base columns.
The mass of the rigid floors is 2500 kg each, and consider the story stiffness in sway
(combined stiffness of all the columns in each story are given as 4kN/mm).

ii) Draw the mode (fist mode and second made) shapes diagrammatically.
Q2. (a) Briefly explain how the elastic response spectrum is used in seismic engineering
design.
(c) Explain the “Lateral Force Method” which is commonly used in seismic engineering
design and how it is incorporated in the codal provision (Eurocode).
Q3. Two cabinets in close proximity are idealized as vertical cantilevers as follows (Figure
Q3(a)).
h1 = 2 m
h2 = 2.2 m

iii) Determine spectral displacement at the CoG(Center of Gravity) for each object using
the response spectra.
iv) Interpolate/Extrapolate displacement to the location of potential contact through
the fundamental mode shape.
v) Sum displacements and compare with the gap to determine whether pounding.

Q4. A column A—B in a braced frame supports a design axial load of 2000 kN as shown in
Figure Q4.
Design Data:
Breadth of the column (b) 300 mm
Depth of the column (h) 375 mm
Clear height of the column (L) 3.0 m
Standard fire resistance REI 60
Strength class of the concrete C35/45
Characteristic strength of the reinforcement ( ) 500 MPa
Diameter of main tension steel for the beam Assume 4T/25 mm
Diameter of links Assume 8 mm

ii) Determine the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement required for medium
ductility level. (Assumed DCM = 10)
iii) Design the transfer reinforcement (Diameter, Spacing etc.) and draw the section.
Q5. The accompanying figure Q5(a) shows a 6 story RC structure with 250mm thk shear walls
located along the Grids 1, 10, A & D. Apart from providing vertical support to suspended
slabs from 1st floor to roof, these shear walls provide lateral stability against wind forces in
both the North-South & East-West direction. The walls are supported on an independent
foundation and the ground floor is a non-suspended slab.
Given:
Note:
from finishes & mech. services, not including self-weight of the slab
Include a removable partition load of 0.75 kN/m2 in addition to the 2.5 kN/m2 as on
slabs
Characteristic wind pressure taken as 1.2 kN/m2 uniformly distributed over the entire
height of building acting in the N-S direction

Characteristic strength of concrete and steel reinforcement taken as 30 N/mm2 and 500
N/mm2 respectively
