Build Up One Another

The document discusses building up one another through pursuing peace and unity as Christians. It notes that we are all sinful but Jesus makes us living stones being built into a spiritual house. Christians can strengthen this house by demonstrating humility, avoiding petty arguments, using their gifts to serve others, refraining from evil speech, and speaking words of life instead of death. The goal is for Christians to fit together closely without visible joints, like a single stone, through promoting peace and mutual edification.

BUILD UP ONE ANOTHER – Romans 14:19

September 18, 2022 – John Adair

“So then, let us pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another” (Romans 14:19)

We are all (Romans 3:23)

Jesus is our (1 Peter 2:6)

“You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:5).

The Shepherd of Hermas:

“All the stones that were dragged from the deep they placed in the building just as they were, for they had been shaped
and fit at the joints with the other stones. In fact, they fitted one another so closely that the joints were not visible, and
the structure of the tower looked as if it were built of a single stone.”

Strengthen the tower (1 Peter 2:5) by:

1. humility (Philippians 2:4–7)

2. petty arguments (Romans 14:5–8)

Ambrosiaster:
“Since disapproval leads to discord, Paul teaches us to be peaceful and to avoid arguments overeating or not eating.
Instead, he encourages us to follow the way of upbuilding.”

3. our gifts (Ephesians 4:11–16)

4. evil speech (James 4:11)

5. words of life (Proverbs 15:4)
