  Study: Electromagnetic Waves Study Guide
Science 8 Sem 1 Name:
Date:

Use this guide to take notes as you work through the activity. Taking good notes can
help you remember important ideas. Your notes on this guide will help you prepare
for quizzes and tests.

Main idea: Electromagnetic waves consist of vibrating electric and magnetic fields.

1. What two kinds of fields are disturbed, or vibrate, as an electromagnetic wave

passes?

2. Circle the arrows and word that show the direction of an electromagnetic wave's
vibrations in relation to the wave's motion. Then circle the word that describes the
type of wave.

3. Circle the word that correctly completes the sentence.

Only [electromagnetic/mechanical] waves can travel through empty space.

Main idea: Electromagnetic waves have properties that determine their energy.

4. Fill in the table and circle the correct words to identify the wave properties related
to brightness and color.

Visible light Wave property Observed relationship

characteristic

Brightness   Compared with dim light,

light waves that look
bright tend to have:

higher amplitudes.
lower amplitudes.
longer wavelengths.
shorter wavelengths.

Color   Compared with blue light,

light waves that look red
tend to have:

higher amplitudes.
lower amplitudes.
longer wavelengths.
shorter wavelengths.

5. Fill in the chart to summarize the relationship between an electromagnetic wave's

amplitude and wavelength and its energy.

6. Watch the video "Frequency, Wavelength, and Wave Speed." Then circle the word
that correctly completes each sentence to show how these wave properties are
related.

A wave that has a long wavelength has a [high/low] frequency.

A wave that has a short wavelength has a [high/low] frequency.

How fast a wave travels is its [frequency/speed/wavelength].

Main idea: The electromagnetic spectrum includes both visible and nonvisible light.

7. Use the terms infrared light, microwaves, UV light, visible light, and X-rays to
complete the chart. Then circle the correct word to show how each property of light
changes as you read from left to right across the chart.

Microwave Infrared Visible Ultraviolet X-ray
