PHY 115 Problem set 2

Problem set 2
Q1)
A particle moves along the x axis. Its
position varies with time according to
the expression.
x(t)= -4 t + 2 t2 m/s
where x is in meters and t is in
seconds. The position–time graph
for this motion is shown in Figure.
Note that the particle moves in the
negative x direction for the first second
of motion, is momentarily at rest at the
moment t=1 s, and moves in the
positive x direction at times t >1 s.
a) Determine the displacement of the particle in the time intervals t = 0 to t = 1
s and t = 1 s to t = 3 s.
b) Calculate the average velocity during these two-time intervals.
c) Estimate the instantaneous velocity of the particle at t =2.5 s.

Q2)
The velocity of a particle moving along the x axis varies in time according to the
expression.
v(t) = (40 – 5 t2) m/s
a) Calculate the average acceleration in the time interval t=0 to t = 2.0 s.
b) Determine the instantaneous acceleration at t = 2.0 s.
c)
Q3) Which of the graphs shows that one of runners started 10 yards further
ahead of the other? Explain your answer.

Q4)
In which of the following graphs below are both runners moving at the
same speed? Explain your answer.

Q5) The distance-time graphs below represent the motion of a car. Match the descriptions
with the graphs. Explain your answers.
Descriptions:
1. The car is stopped.
2. The car is traveling at a constant speed.
3. The speed of the car is decreasing.
4. The car is coming back.

Q6) The speed-time graphs below represent the motion of a car. Match the
descriptions.
with the graphs. Explain your answers.
Descriptions:
1. The car is stopped.
2. The car is traveling at a constant speed.
3. The car is accelerating.
4. The car is slowing down.

Q7) The graph below shows how the speed of a bus changes during part of a
journey.
PHY 115 Problem set 2

Choose the correct words from the following list to describe the motion during
each segment of the journey to fill in the blanks.
• accelerating
• decelerating
• constant speed
• at rest
Segment 0-A The bus is ____________. Its speed changes from 0 to 10 m/s in
5 seconds.

Segment A-B The bus is moving at a _______________of 10 m/s for 5

seconds.

Segment B-C The bus is _____________. It is slowing down from 10 m/s to

rest in 3 seconds.

Segment C-D The bus is _________________. It has stopped.

Segment D-E The bus is __________________. It is gradually increasing in

speed.
