In vitro fertilization (IVF) Sperm fertilizes an oocyte in a laboratory dish; the two to six day old pre-embryo
is placed in the woman’s uterus.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection Variant of in vitro fertilization in which a sperm cell is directly injected into an
(ICSI) egg.
Gamete intrafallopian transfer Oocytes are collected and placed with sperm into a woman’s uterine tube;
(GIFT) fertilization occurs in the woman’s body.
Zygote intrafallopian transfer Sperm fertilizes an oocyte in a laboratory dish; the zygote is placed in a woman’s
(ZIFT) uterine tube 24 hours later.

Substances that cause birth defects

2. Caffeine – reduce blood flow in fetus, low birth weight, a small head size in the newborn.
3. Cigarettes – miscarriage, still birth and prematurity.
4. Illicit drugs – poor fetal growth and low birth weight.

6. Excess or insufficient vitamins – miscarriage, defects in heart, nervous system and the face.
7. Starvation - miscarriage, low birth weight, short stature, tooth decay, delayed sexual development, intellectual
disabilities, type 2 diabetes.
