Officer Involved Shooting:

This afternoon, members of the Rochester Police Department and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were involved in an
investigation involving an armed suspect. The chronology of this investigation began on Friday night around 10pm, when
Officers responded to the 400 block of Monroe Avenue for the report of shots fired. That investigation found that
multiple gunshots were fired from a vehicle into a closed business. Thankfully, no one was injured during that incident. A
short time later, Officers located the vehicle used in the shots fired, unoccupied on Milburn Street. The vehicle was towed
and a search warrant located two firearms inside of it. A possible suspect was developed and the investigation into
positively identifying and apprehending him continued throughout the weekend.

This morning, just after 7:00am, the Brighton Police Department responded to the 1900 block of Elmwood Avenue, in the
Town of Brighton, for the report of shots fired. Brighton Police found evidence of shots fired on Hemmingway Drive,
which struck a vehicle during a road-rage type incident. The investigation into that shots fired was able to identify a
suspect vehicle, which was then located at the same address on Milburn Street. Around 9:00am, Brighton and Rochester
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle after it left the Milburn Street location. The vehicle failed to stop for Officers and
they attempted to chase the vehicle. Due to the unsafe speeds and reckless driving, Officers terminated the pursuit on
590.

Officers continued to monitor the location on Milburn Street and just before 1:00pm, the suspect returned. Deputies
attempted to stop the male on Vassar Street, at which time the suspect pulled out a large hunting-style knife, threatening
Deputies. Deputies fired at least one shot as the male ran. Officers and Deputies chased the male through several yards
and into the backyard of a house in the 200 block of Barrington Street, where he displayed a shotgun towards law-
enforcement personnel. Despite numerous commands to drop the gun, he failed to do so. Rochester Police Officers and
Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies both fired their issued weapons, striking him multiple times. Officers and Deputies
performed life-saving measures at the scene; however, the male was deceased. Thankfully, no members of the general-
public or law-enforcement were injured during this incident.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office was immediately notified and is the primary agency investigating this
incident. The Rochester Police Department’s Professional Standards Section and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office
Internal Affairs are also conducting a parallel investigation.

We talk everyday about the amount of firearms that members of the Rochester Police Department and our partner
agencies recover. Just this year, we have already recovered 156 firearms from the City of Rochester. Each firearm
recovered has a story behind it of the threats that the men and women of law enforcement consistently face. Despite
these threats, we will continue to seek out those that bring harm to our community.
