The system that drains wastewater from sinks, tubs, showers, lavatories
and soil matter from toilets is known as sanitary drainage system

Storm Water Drainage System:


The system that collects storm water from roofs, yards and areaways is
known storm water drainage system.

When both systems mentioned above combines, they are known as a


combined drainage system.
Related terms

House Sewer:
It is that part of the drainage system beginning just outside the foundation
wall and terminating at main sewer in the street. It is a pipe conveying
waste water from an individual structure to a common sewer or point of
disposal Recommended size is 6”.

House Drain:
Underground pipe which receives the discharge of all soil and waste
stack within the building and conveys it to the house sewer. Minimum
Recommended size is 4”.

Soil branch:
The soil branch, installed horizontally, is that portion of the pipe, which receives the
discharge of water closet without additional waste water. It must be extended at a
grade of 1/4in/ft.

Soil Pipe:
Pipe that receives the discharge of water closet and takes it to the manhole directly.

Waste Pipe:
Pipe that carries waste from sink, shower and floor and take it to the manhole through
gully trap.

Cleanout Pipe:
Pipe that caries rain water from roof and directly connected to ground floor.

Trap:
A fitting placed in the drain from a plumbing fixture for the purpose of holding water
or other fluid to form a seal that will prevent that passage of gases and odours from
the drain pipe into the air within the building.

Vent Pipe:
Pipes that lead from the trap to the atmosphere to allow the drainage pressure in the
drainage pipe to become equalized. They carry the sewer gases to atmosphere and do
not let them enter the room.
• P-Trap:
P trap is a plumbing device which prevents odorous gas in plumbing drains and
sewer from rising up through a toilet, sink or floor drain into a home.
• B- Trap:
The bottle trap is an essential element of the sinks in bathrooms and kitchen.
• F-Trap:
The floor trap is used to collect waste water from bathroom (shower and
muslim shower), wash area, wash basin kitchen etc. It prevents ingress of foul
air, insects from sewers into building.
• Gully Trap:
It carries waste water from waste pipe. It is provided outside the building
before connecting to external sewerage line.
Gully
• In residential buildings, the manholes are provided after a
distance of 9-10ft.
• In sewage system, pipes must connect/turn at an angle of 45⁰.
• The angle of entrance of pipe in F-trap must be equal to the
angle of exit of pipe.
• Waste pipe must connect to the gully trap before entering into
the manhole.
• If F-trap is going to be provided along the wall, so it distance
from the wall must be equal to 6in.
•an individual vent should be at least one-half the size of the
drain it vents (no less than 1 1/4", 32 mm)
